Uber makes multimillion-dollar investment in Lucid and Nuro to build a premium robotaxi service

Uber’s Lucid and Nuro robotaxi program has grown from a 20,000-vehicle plan and $300 million Lucid investment to at least 35,000 vehicles and $500 million invested in Lucid. San Francisco is planned first, with Houston expected in mid-2027, but public pricing and full commercial availability are not yet confirmed.

Uber makes multimillion-dollar investment in Lucid and Nuro to build a premium robotaxi service exclusively for the Uber platform. Lucid said on April 14, 2026, that Uber’s Lucid investment had reached $500 million. The first planned market is the San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026; Houston is planned for mid-2027, not confirmed as operating.

The headline describes a strategic industrial partnership, not a single company doing every part of the work. Uber supplies the marketplace, rider app, demand, fleet operations, and support; Lucid supplies the electric vehicle; and Nuro supplies the company-described Level 4 autonomous-driving system. The July 2025 plan initially covered at least 20,000 modified vehicles over six years, subject to the agreement’s conditions.

By August 14, 2026, the program had moved through a closed-course prototype, autonomous on-road testing, a production-intent vehicle reveal, employee test rides, and defined California regulatory permissions. Those milestones matter, but the exact consumer launch date, price, coverage area, and final operating structure were still not established.

Key takeaways

  • Uber, Lucid, and Nuro are combining three different capabilities: Uber’s ride-hailing marketplace and fleet operations, Lucid’s electric-vehicle platform, and Nuro’s company-described Level 4 autonomous-driving system.
  • Lucid Group reported on April 14, 2026, that Uber’s total investment in Lucid would reach $500 million, up from the initial $300 million investment that closed in September 2025.
  • The original SEC-filed agreement covered at least 20,000 modified Lucid Gravity Plus vehicles over six years; the partners later expanded the global commitment to at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles, including Gravity and future Midsize models.
  • The San Francisco Bay Area remained the first planned commercial market for later 2026, while Houston was announced as the second planned market for mid-2027.
  • Testing, employee test rides, and California regulatory authorizations are real milestones, but they do not prove that a fully commercial, publicly available robotaxi service is already operating.

What did Uber invest in Lucid and Nuro for?

Uber is investing in a three-company robotaxi program rather than simply buying autonomous cars. The partnership is designed to combine Uber’s customer demand, app, fleet-management capabilities, depot operations, and rider support with Lucid’s electric-vehicle architecture and Nuro’s autonomous-driving technology.

The partners announced the program on July 17, 2025, as a premium robotaxi service created exclusively for the Uber platform. The original announcement said vehicles would be owned and operated by Uber or designated fleet partners, which means the program is intended to be a managed fleet inside Uber’s marketplace rather than a separate Nuro consumer app. Uber’s original partnership announcement describes the planned vehicle-and-software integration.

Company Primary contribution What that means for the service
Uber Ride-hailing marketplace, rider-facing app, demand, fleet management, depots, and in-cabin experience Customers are expected to request the robotaxi through Uber, while Uber or designated fleet partners manage the vehicles and operations.
Lucid Electric-vehicle architecture and manufacturing platform The initial robotaxi is based on the Lucid Gravity, with the later commitment also covering future Lucid Midsize vehicles.
Nuro Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy, sensors, autonomous testing, and validation Nuro supplies the driving system and its integration with the vehicle rather than the ride-hailing marketplace.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, described the arrangement this way in the July 2025 announcement: “We’re thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, purpose-built just for the Uber platform.” The statement reflects the program’s distribution strategy, but it is not evidence that commercial service is available everywhere Uber operates.

How much did Uber invest in Lucid, and what is known about Nuro?

Uber’s publicly documented investment in Lucid increased from $300 million to $500 million, while the reviewed announcements do not identify a separate dollar amount for Uber’s investment in Nuro. The July 2025 announcement described planned multi-hundred-million-dollar investments in both Lucid and Nuro, but the specific Nuro amount should not be inferred from the disclosed Lucid figures.

Investment item Amount or status Date and source What can safely be concluded
Initial Uber investment in Lucid $300 million Closed September 4, 2025, according to Lucid Group This was the initial strategic investment in Lucid; it is not a statement about Uber’s revenue, profit, or total robotaxi spending.
Total Uber investment in Lucid $500 million Announced April 14, 2026, by Lucid Group The disclosed Lucid commitment increased by $200 million from the initial announced investment.
Uber investment in Nuro Specific amount not established in the reviewed sources July 17, 2025 partnership announcement The announcement referred to planned investments in both companies, but it did not provide a Nuro-specific figure in the dossier.

Lucid’s September 4, 2025 announcement confirmed the closing of the initial $300 million investment. Lucid’s April 2026 update then said Uber’s total investment in Lucid would reach $500 million as the vehicle partnership expanded. Those figures describe investment commitments or transactions reported by the companies; they should not be relabeled as revenue, profit, or an independently verified cash-cost total for the entire program.

How many Lucid robotaxis will Uber buy?

The vehicle commitment grew from at least 20,000 modified Lucid Gravity Plus vehicles to at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles. The first figure came from the SEC-filed Vehicle Production Agreement, while the later figure came from Lucid’s April 2026 announcement and includes the Gravity plus future Lucid Midsize vehicles.

Stage Vehicle commitment Vehicle scope Timing or condition
Original agreement, 2025 At least 20,000 vehicles Modified Gravity Plus vehicles Purchase commitment over six years after start of production, subject to specified conditions; production was targeted for late 2026.
Expanded partnership, 2026 At least 35,000 vehicles Lucid vehicles including Gravity and future Midsize models Expanded global robotaxi commitment announced by Lucid on April 14, 2026.

The SEC-filed Vehicle Production Agreement is important because it gives the original 20,000-vehicle figure contractual context. The figure is a purchase commitment subject to conditions, not a count of vehicles already manufactured, deployed, or available for riders.

“At least 35,000” also does not mean 35,000 robotaxis were on public roads by April 2026. It describes the expanded scale of the planned partnership. Actual fleet size will depend on production, autonomy validation, regulatory permissions, depot capacity, and the partners’ deployment decisions.

When will the Lucid, Nuro, and Uber robotaxi launch?

The first planned commercial market is the San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026, and Houston is the second planned market with expected service in mid-2027. Neither announcement establishes an exact public launch day, consumer price, guaranteed coverage area, or final ride-eligibility rules.

Date Milestone What it proves What it does not prove
July 17, 2025 Uber, Lucid, and Nuro announced the partnership; a prototype was operating autonomously on a closed circuit at Nuro’s Las Vegas proving grounds. The companies had begun integrating the vehicle and autonomy system. A closed-circuit prototype was not a public commercial service.
September 4, 2025 Lucid announced that Uber’s initial $300 million investment had closed. The disclosed Lucid investment transaction had closed. The investment close did not establish a consumer launch date.
December 2025 to January 2026 Autonomous on-road testing began in December; a production-intent vehicle was shown at CES in January. The program had progressed from closed-course work to public-road testing and a production-intent design. Production-intent does not mean mass production or public availability.
April 13, 2026 Select Uber employees began requesting robotaxi test rides through the Uber app in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a safety driver present. The partners were validating the rider experience in a limited test. Employee rides were not unrestricted public driverless service.
June 17, 2026 Houston was announced as the second planned deployment market, with expected service in mid-2027. The partners had identified a second target market and planned fleet infrastructure. The date remained a plan subject to testing, operations, and regulatory developments.

The CES 2026 announcement described the production-intent vehicle and the start of autonomous on-road testing. The later Nuro test-ride update added a rider-validation milestone, but the presence of a safety driver is a material distinction when describing the test.

Will Uber robotaxis be available in San Francisco?

Uber robotaxis are planned for the broader San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026, but the reviewed information does not confirm a fully commercial service operating throughout San Francisco or the entire Bay Area. The employee test rides were limited, and the exact public service boundary had not been established as of August 14, 2026.

California regulatory records provide more precise geographic context. The California DMV lists Nuro’s Lucid Gravity and R3 Nuro Robot for driverless testing in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The DMV record allows testing at all times of day and night under specified weather and speed conditions, and it lists Nuro deployment authorization in those counties under published operating conditions. The California DMV’s autonomous-vehicle permit records should be read as location- and condition-specific permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DMV authorization is not the same as universal commercial availability. A regulatory authorization can permit defined testing or deployment activity while the companies continue validating the technology, preparing operations, and determining where and how a consumer service will open. The partners’ broader rollout remained forward-looking as of August 14, 2026.

Is the Lucid Gravity robotaxi already driverless?

The Lucid Gravity robotaxi has been used in autonomous testing, but the available evidence does not show that the vehicle is already available to the general public as an unrestricted driverless ride. The April 2026 Uber employee rides specifically included a safety driver, while the California DMV records cover defined driverless testing and deployment conditions.

The vehicle shown by the partners is a production-intent robotaxi based on Lucid’s Gravity platform and integrated with Nuro Driver. The companies describe a redundant sensor suite that includes cameras, lidar, radar, and a roof-mounted halo. Uber is responsible for the passenger-facing experience, including rider controls and support functions, while Nuro provides the driving system and autonomy visualization. Uber’s Houston announcement describes the vehicle and operating plan.

Vehicle or system element Role in the program Evidence limit
Lucid Gravity platform Base electric vehicle for the initial robotaxi The partners’ description is not independent range, durability, safety, or comfort testing.
Nuro Driver Company-described Level 4 autonomous-driving system The dossier does not provide independent safety-performance results or a comparative ranking against other systems.
Cameras, lidar, radar, and roof-mounted halo Redundant sensing and perception hardware described by the partners The presence of sensors alone does not establish performance in every weather, road, or traffic condition.
Uber rider interface Passenger controls, support functions, and the Uber app experience Final public controls, accessibility details, coverage, and support policies were not established.

Lucid has positioned the vehicle as preserving a premium cabin experience while adapting details for repeated fleet use. “Premium” is therefore the partners’ positioning, not an independently tested conclusion about luxury, comfort, or value compared with other robotaxi programs.

How will the robotaxi fleet be charged and maintained?

The fleet will require dedicated charging, cleaning, repairs, maintenance, and depot operations rather than only autonomous-driving software. Uber’s Houston plan includes a 50,000-square-foot depot and a dedicated charging pitstop for those fleet-support functions.

According to Uber’s June 17, 2026 announcement, the Houston facilities are intended to support charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and other operations. That makes robotaxi charging infrastructure and autonomous-fleet maintenance central deployment requirements, not optional consumer accessories. The announcement does not identify a specific infrastructure supplier, merchant, or commercial partner.

The depot model also explains why a robotaxi rollout cannot be measured only by the number of cars ordered. Fleet uptime depends on where vehicles can charge, how quickly they can be cleaned and repaired, how remote and on-site support are organized, and whether local operations can keep vehicles available during demand peaks.

Is this a real commercial service or only a prototype?

It is a real industrial program with signed agreements, disclosed investment, public-road testing, employee rides, and regulatory milestones, but the consumer-facing commercial rollout is still a plan as of August 14, 2026. Calling the entire service already operational would overstate the evidence; calling it only a prototype would ignore the manufacturing, fleet, and regulatory work already announced.

Evidence category Current status Practical interpretation
Investment Uber’s Lucid investment reached $500 million according to Lucid’s April 2026 announcement. There is substantial disclosed corporate commitment behind the program.
Vehicle scale At least 35,000 Lucid vehicles are planned globally. The partners are planning a fleet program, but planned vehicles are not deployed vehicles.
Autonomy development Closed-course work, autonomous on-road testing, and a production-intent vehicle have been announced. The technology has advanced beyond a concept rendering, but the dossier contains no independent safety test results.
Rider validation Select Uber employees took test rides through the Uber app with a safety driver. The partners were testing the passenger experience before broader launch.
Regulation California DMV records list defined testing and deployment permissions for Nuro in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Some activity is authorized under conditions; the authorization is not statewide or nationwide commercial availability.
Public launch San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026 and Houston mid-2027 are planned targets. Exact dates, pricing, service coverage, and ride eligibility remain unconfirmed.

Dave Ferguson, Nuro’s co-founder and co-CEO, called the CES vehicle reveal “a significant milestone on our path to delivering autonomy at scale.” That is an accurate description of the companies’ stated objective, but it remains a company statement rather than independent proof of safety, reliability, or commercial scale.

What remains unknown about Uber’s Lucid and Nuro robotaxi?

Several details that matter to riders and car-market observers had not been established in the reviewed sources as of August 14, 2026:

  • The exact public launch date in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • The exact consumer price, booking rules, coverage area, and ride eligibility.
  • The specific dollar amount of Uber’s investment in Nuro.
  • The final division of ownership and daily fleet operations among Uber, designated fleet partners, Lucid, and Nuro.
  • The number of vehicles that will be manufactured, validated, approved, and actually available at launch.
  • Independent safety-performance testing or comparative evidence showing that the service is safer, cheaper, more luxurious, or more advanced than competing robotaxi programs.

Those unknowns are not minor footnotes. They determine whether a large vehicle commitment becomes a useful transportation service, how quickly the fleet can expand, and what riders will experience when they request an autonomous car in the Uber app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much did Uber invest in Nuro?

The reviewed announcements do not establish a Nuro-specific dollar amount. Uber announced planned multi-hundred-million-dollar investments in both Lucid and Nuro in July 2025, while the publicly documented Lucid investment rose from $300 million to $500 million.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Lucid Gravity robotaxi already available to the public?

No. The Lucid Gravity robotaxi has undergone autonomous testing, but the limited Uber employee rides announced in April 2026 included a safety driver. General-public driverless availability was not confirmed.

Does California DMV authorization mean Uber’s robotaxi is available throughout California?

No. California DMV authorization applies to defined testing or deployment activity in specified locations and operating conditions. DMV records do not mean the Uber robotaxi service is available statewide or nationwide.

When will Uber’s Lucid and Nuro robotaxi launch in Houston?

Houston is the second planned market, with expected service in mid-2027. Uber also announced a planned 50,000-square-foot depot and dedicated charging pitstop for charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and other fleet operations.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Uber is building a genuine, three-way robotaxi partnership with Lucid and Nuro, not merely displaying a concept vehicle. The documented Lucid investment has reached $500 million and the planned fleet has grown to at least 35,000 vehicles, but San Francisco and Houston remain planned deployments—not proof of broad public service—and the exact price, launch date, coverage, and Nuro investment amount remain unknown.
