Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George compared the controls to an Xbox controller; the Army’s own announcement confirms digital vehicle controls and an upgradeable open architecture, but does not name a controller model.
What is the Formula One-style cockpit on the new Abrams tank?
It is a reported comparison for the M1E3’s driver interface. At an Association of the United States Army event, George described a cockpit with controls that “looks like an X-Box controller,” and said, “It’s modular, so it can be updated.” Defense News reported that the device was made by Fanatec.
That description does not mean the tank has a literal Formula One racing-car cockpit. Nor does it establish a final production configuration: the Army has not publicly identified a Fanatec model or confirmed that the displayed arrangement will be used in every operational vehicle.
Does the M1E3 use an Xbox controller?
Not according to the available descriptions. George likened the interface to an Xbox controller; Defense News says the control device was made by Fanatec. The Army’s January 2026 announcement does not mention Xbox, Fanatec, or a retail controller. It confirms that the prototype has advanced digital vehicle controls and a government-owned open systems architecture designed to allow faster software and hardware updates. Those are distinct claims: the Army confirms the digital-controls approach, while the specific controller comparison and manufacturer come from George’s remarks as reported by Defense News.

What is the M1E3 Abrams?
The M1E3 is the U.S. Army’s next Abrams modernization effort, now represented by an early prototype unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2026. The Army says the design was developed in collaboration with Roush, drawing on soldier feedback and earlier risk-reduction work, to move software, mobility, and lethality technologies to soldiers more quickly. The Army’s announcement describes a prototype under development, not a production tank in operational service.
The Army says the M1E3 is intended to address threats such as drones and long-range precision weapons while reducing vehicle weight and logistics demands. These are program goals, not independently demonstrated combat results. The Army also described generative AI and other digital-engineering tools as part of the design and integration process; that does not mean the tank autonomously fights.

Why did the Army start the M1E3 program?
In September 2023, the Army said it would end the planned M1A2 SEPv4 effort and develop the M1E3 instead. Its rationale was that adding capability to the Abrams had become increasingly difficult without increasing weight, while the service also wanted to reduce the platform’s logistical footprint and improve integrated protection. The Army planned to carry forward useful SEPv4 features and use modular open systems architecture to make future upgrades easier. The 2023 announcement projected initial operational capability in the early 2030s.
What has—and has not—been established about its specifications?
The early prototype reveal does not amount to a complete public specification. The Army confirms its modernization aims, Roush collaboration, digital controls, and open architecture. Other details have been attributed to George in reporting and should remain qualified until the Army publishes a final configuration or test results.

| Reported detail | What the source says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 25% lighter | Defense News reported in January 2026 that a three-person crew and autoloader would help make the M1E3 25% lighter. | A reported figure, not an independently verified final specification. |
| 50% more fuel efficient | Defense News reported a hybrid-electric drivetrain said to make the tank 50% more fuel efficient. | A reported projection, not a demonstrated operational result. |
| Engine and transmission suppliers | Defense News reported George named Caterpillar for the engine and Michigan-based SAPA for the transmission. | Reported supplier details; the Army’s reveal does not provide a full final component specification. |
| Fanatec control model | Defense News identifies the device maker, but neither that report nor the Army announcement identifies a specific model. | The model and final operational use are not stated. |
George also described the program as reaching the prototype stage six years early, according to Defense News. That is a schedule comparison, not a service-entry date. The early-2030s initial operational capability date was the Army’s 2023 projection; later reports discuss accelerated prototype activity, but do not establish that the M1E3 has entered production or service.

A Congressional Research Service review updated September 11, 2025—before the January 2026 prototype reveal—recorded unresolved questions about which units would receive four reported prototypes expected in formations in 2026, whether M1E3s would replace older Abrams tanks one-for-one, National Guard distribution, the time needed to equip all armored brigade combat teams, and possible foreign military sales. These were open questions documented at the time of that report, not proof that no decisions have been made since. Read the CRS program review.
