A homebuilt solid-state ignition module is not a universal parts-and-wiring project: the right design depends first on the engine’s existing ignition architecture. Identify whether it uses a battery-fed coil or magneto charge coil, what triggers the spark, and which coil and timing arrangement it requires. TCI and CDI are different systems, not interchangeable labels for a generic electronic box.
What a solid-state ignition module does
An ignition module switches electrical energy in time with engine rotation so the ignition coil can produce the high voltage needed at a spark plug. “Solid-state” refers to electronic switching rather than relying on mechanical switching alone; it does not identify one universal circuit. Arthur G. Hufton’s 1967 SAE paper, “Solid-State Ignition,” discussed replacing mechanical distributor components with electronics and covered both transistor and capacitor-discharge ignition.
TCI and CDI store and release energy differently
| Architecture | How it works | What to establish for an engine |
|---|---|---|
| TCI (transistor-controlled ignition) | A transistor switches current through the ignition-coil primary. Current builds a magnetic field; when the transistor interrupts it, the changing field induces high voltage in the secondary winding. | Confirm the coil’s requirements, the trigger or pickup, the power source, and how ignition timing is controlled. |
| CDI (capacitor-discharge ignition) | A capacitor is charged from an alternator/ACG or battery, directly or through a voltage-raising circuit. A trigger causes the stored energy to discharge through the ignition system. | Confirm how the capacitor is charged, the trigger and switching-device compatibility, the coil requirements, and the engine’s timing arrangement. |
Shindengen describes TCI and CDI as distinct ignition-unit systems, with different energy-storage and switching sequences: its ignition-system overview. A commercial TCI/CDI module may be an alternative to building one, but the category name alone cannot establish fit.
Identify the engine’s existing system before choosing a design
Start with the engine’s service information and existing ignition hardware. Record the answers to these questions before selecting or designing a module:

- [ Function ]The ignition control module solves the problems of flameout, stall, and ignition coil failure, improves ignition reliability, and is directly replaced with a connector.
- [ Feature ]The ignition control module is made of durable materials, and the backplane for heat dissipation can prevent premature failure, and the performance is stable and reliable.
- Where does ignition energy come from? Determine whether the system is battery-fed or uses a magneto/alternator charge coil.
- What triggers the spark? Identify breaker points, an inductive or magnetic pickup, a trigger coil, an electronic amplifier, or another arrangement.
- Which coil is specified? Check the ignition manufacturer’s coil requirements rather than assuming a TCI coil and CDI coil are interchangeable.
- What engine and timing setup is involved? Establish cylinder count and arrangement, trigger position, and whether timing is fixed or controlled mechanically or electronically.
- What documentation applies? Verify the engine-specific service data and the module’s own instructions, including environmental and installation requirements.
Shindengen says its ignition units serve motorcycles, small universal engines, and marine engines, but that broad category description does not mean any given unit fits every engine.
A magneto CDI is one specific small-engine architecture
One Tecumseh solid-state CDI description shows why a parts list cannot be generalized. In that system, flywheel magnets induce energy in a charge coil, which charges a capacitor. A trigger coil operates an SCR; the SCR switches the stored energy through a transformer toward the spark plug. The chapter describes voltage rising from 200 volts to 25,000 volts in that particular system. Those figures describe the Tecumseh system, not a general design specification or a safe target for a homebuilt module. See the Tecumseh technical chapter.

Check trigger and application compatibility
Compatibility is specific to the ignition product, not just to whether an engine is called “electronic” or “distributor” ignition. For example, Holley/MSD’s Digital 6A/6AL instructions cover specified 12-volt, distributor-triggered applications and list breaker points, electronic amplifiers, and magnetic pickups as trigger options. The manual expressly excludes distributorless systems for that product family. Those limits and wiring details should not be applied to other modules.
Before using any replacement or conversion module, match its documentation to the engine, trigger, coil, power source, cylinder application, and timing needs. If any of those details are unknown, obtain the engine’s service information or confirmation from the ignition manufacturer rather than adapting a schematic by resemblance.

Commercial alternatives to building a module
- Application-matched TCI or CDI unit: A manufacturer-listed module can avoid designing the switching circuit yourself, but its trigger, energy source, coil, and engine fit still need to be verified.
- MSD Digital 6A/6AL: Consider only for an application covered by its product-specific instructions; those instructions exclude distributorless systems and require timing to be set to engine specifications.
- MSD Super HEI kit PN 85001: Holley lists this kit with a Digital 6AL ignition control, Blaster SS coil, coil wire, and HEI dust cover. It is an HEI-specific conversion option; verify the exact application. Holley describes it as allowing the lower-powered HEI module and coil to be removed or bypassed: Holley’s product listing.
The choice between a homebuilt design and a documented product is therefore chiefly a question of verified compatibility, available engine data, and whether the builder can safely validate the complete ignition system—not a basis for assuming a universal improvement in power, economy, starting, or reliability.

Ignition-coil circuits can produce dangerous high voltage. Holley/MSD’s CD-ignition instructions direct installers to disconnect the battery during installation and warn against touching coil terminals. They also require resetting timing to the engine’s specifications. Follow the instructions for the exact ignition product and engine; do not treat one manufacturer’s wiring or safety procedure as universal guidance for a different system.
