Three people died in two separate crashes in Western Australia on 27 and 28 July 2014, according to a contemporaneous report by PerthNow. One person died after a car struck a pole and tree in Canning Vale; two others died in a rollover near Zanthus. Police were reported to be investigating possible contributing factors, but the report did not establish either crash’s cause.
The Canning Vale crash on 28 July 2014
PerthNow reported that emergency services were called at about 3:10am to a crash on Ranford Road near Bannister Road in Canning Vale. A Toyota Corolla struck a metal light pole and then a tree. The 22-year-old driver, who was alone in the car, died at the scene.
Major Crash detectives were reported to be investigating whether the eastbound car had lost control and whether speed was a factor. Those were lines of inquiry, not findings about what caused the crash.
The Zanthus rollover on 27 July 2014
About 8am the previous day, a Toyota Hilux travelling east on the Trans Access Road rolled near Zanthus, approximately 211 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie, PerthNow reported. An 18-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both from Rawlinna, died. The woman was a rear passenger and was thrown from the vehicle; the man was driving and died after CPR was given.

Three other people were in the Hilux, and two received minor injuries. Police were reported to be investigating whether alcohol and failure to wear seatbelts were factors. The report did not establish either as a cause.
Why the report described a “fatal 24 hours”
The headline combined two distinct crashes on consecutive days, not one multi-vehicle incident: one death in Canning Vale on 28 July and two near Zanthus on 27 July. Together, the incidents accounted for three reported deaths within roughly 24 hours.
