Tusca HitchHiker Is Now the Freedom Camper: Prices, Sizes and Fitment

Tusca’s 2024 US$2,750 HitchHiker is now the Freedom Camper. Here is what changed, what it fits, and what to verify before mounting one in a truck bed or on a utility trailer.

When Tusca Outdoors introduced the 190-pound HitchHiker in 2024, its US$2,750 launch price and ability to move between a pickup bed and a utility trailer made it a stripped-back alternative to a conventional RV. The product is now sold as the Freedom Camper—and while the modular idea remains, today’s official list prices start above the headline’s sub-US$3,000 benchmark.

The original claim needs a date stamp: Tusca Outdoors introduced the 190-lb HitchHiker at US$2,750 in February 2024. That pod has since been renamed the Freedom Camper, and the current officially displayed direct prices begin above US$3,000: US$3,499.99 for the Truck Bed Camper and from US$3,439.99 for the Trailer Camper. The central idea remains appealing, though—a hard-sided sleeping shell that can be mounted in an appropriate pickup bed or secured to a suitable utility-trailer platform instead of buying a dedicated RV.

What the original HitchHiker was—and was not

The launch-era HitchHiker was a deliberately bare enclosed pod, not a self-contained camper trailer. It had no chassis, axle, kitchen, bathroom, battery system, solar system, or climate-control package reported as standard. Its appeal was that the owner supplied the platform: slide it into a pickup bed for a truck-camper trip, place it on a flat utility trailer when the truck is needed for other work, then remove it when camping season is over.

Original 2024 HitchHiker specification Reported figure
Exterior size 7.5 ft long × 4.8 ft wide × 4.4 ft high
Stated weight 190 lb
Launch base price US$2,750
Sleeping space Room for a full-size mattress on the floor; mattress not included
Basic features Lockable door, screened slider windows on both sides, small vents, shore-power hookup

That modest equipment list is the point. A hard shell can be more secure and weather-protective than many truck-bed tents, while its low mass leaves room for the owner to choose their own sleeping, electrical, storage, and cooking setup. It also means the published price was never the price of a finished camper vacation: bedding, power, food storage, lighting beyond any included equipment, ventilation upgrades, water, a stove, and sanitation are separate decisions and costs.

The HitchHiker is now called the Freedom Camper

Tusca says the HitchHiker became the Freedom Camper after the company joined the Redneck Outdoor Products family; it also says the original Tusca team, including its founders, remains involved. For anyone searching listings, reviews, or used-market posts, “HitchHiker” is therefore the historical name and “Freedom Camper” is the current product line name.

Current Freedom Camper truck-bed versions are not one-size-fits-all. The following are the manufacturer’s stated exterior dimensions and weights.

Truck Bed Camper version Stated exterior dimensions Stated weight Manufacturer fitment note
48 × 79 79 × 48 × 54 in 175 lb Midsize-oriented; tailgate position varies by bed
58 × 79 79 × 58 × 54 in 185 lb Full-size-truck oriented
58 × 89 89 × 58 × 54 in 195 lb Longer full-size option
72 × 89 89 × 72 × 54 in 270 lb For flatbeds wider than 72.5 in

The first three sizes require a raised platform to clear pickup wheel wells, according to the manufacturer. That detail explains why a camper that looks narrow on paper cannot simply be assumed to fit every bed. The original 7.5-ft model likewise had a bed-length constraint, and its width required a platform above the wheel wells.

Truck-bed use versus trailer use

The same basic shell can serve two different jobs, but neither is automatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case Why it is useful What must be solved
Pickup-bed camper No trailer to tow; the pod can come off when the truck is needed. Bed geometry, wheel-well clearance, raised-platform height, payload, proper tie-downs, rear visibility and tailgate arrangement.
Utility-trailer camper Leaves the pickup bed free once the trailer is unhitched; can make a simple trailer a camping platform. Deck size and rating, axle and tire condition, secure attachment points, loaded tongue weight, local registration and braking rules.

A Freedom Camper does not turn a trailer into an engineered RV by itself. The trailer still needs to be in sound condition and suitable for the complete loaded system. Likewise, a low pod weight is not a blanket approval for a truck: platform, mounting hardware, passengers, bedding, batteries, water, gear and accessories all count against the vehicle’s payload.

Fitment and payload: check these before ordering

  1. Measure the actual truck or trailer. Record bed-floor length, inside rail width, wheel-well height and width, tailgate configuration, and the space a raised platform consumes. For a trailer, measure the usable deck rather than relying on its advertised name.
  2. Read the payload label on the specific truck. Use the door-jamb payload figure for that vehicle, not a model-line brochure maximum. Add the camper, platform, mounting kit, people, bedding, batteries, water, gear and every accessory.
  3. Plan attachment before delivery. The Truck Bed Camper listing includes a mounting kit with turnbuckles, side plates, D-rings, hardware and instructions. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; do not improvise attachment to weak trailer rails or truck-bed trim.
  4. Plan loading and storage. The manufacturer says two people are required to load, unload and store the 175–270-lb truck-bed campers. “Two people required” is an instruction, not a promise that any two people can lift one safely in every setting. Use appropriate help or lifting equipment if the height, footing, strength, or camper configuration calls for it.
  5. Price the delivered, usable installation. Current truck-bed shipping is offered in the lower 48 states, with certain states requiring a custom freight quote. Freight, taxes, platform materials, trailer work, electrical additions and accessories can change the out-the-door total substantially.

How minimalist can it be?

For a simple overnight setup, a mattress, bedding, basic light, secure mounting, and safe ventilation may be enough. Longer trips quickly expose the limits of an empty shell. A sensible build-out normally considers the following:

  • [Material & Function] This toy SUV trailer for boys is crafted primarily from diecast metal with plastic parts and rubber tires, ensuring durability and realistic detailing. • [Detailed Design] This SUV trailer toy showcases an intricate design that mirrors the actual Wrangler Rubicon, complete with a rugged front grille, openable doors, realistic tires, and a detailed interior. The SUV trailer is also impressive for its accurate proportions that replicate the real thing. These attention-to-detail elements make the set not only fun to play with but also a great display piece.
  • [Interactive Fun]: The trailer is detachable, adding an extra layer of versatility and fun. Kids can create various play scenarios, using the SUV independently or attaching the camper for more extended adventures. This interactive feature enhances the play experience, fostering creativity and imaginative storytelling.
  • [Perfect for Collectors and Kids] Great addition to any toy collection or as a gift (Birthday and Christmas Gifts Choice). Whether you’re a dedicated model car collector or looking for a memorable gift for a child, this Wrangler with Trailer Model is a perfect choice. It combines educational value with entertainment, making it an excellent addition to any toy collection. Kids will enjoy hours of imaginative play, while collectors will appreciate the model's craftsmanship and authenticity.
  • Ventilation: screened windows and small vents are useful, but sleeping occupants create moisture. A 12V roof or wall fan with reversible intake/exhaust is a practical upgrade; Freedom Campers sells an 11-inch 12V fan with intake/exhaust modes and an LED light, but that accessory should not be assumed to be included with the camper.
  • Power: shore-power capability does not equal a built-in off-grid electrical system. Decide whether trips need only campsite AC power or a correctly sized battery, charging method, fuse protection and 12V distribution.
  • Temperature management: Freedom Campers markets four-season insulation. That is a manufacturer claim, not independent proof of cold-weather comfort, water resistance, or safe heating in every climate. Insulation does not replace adequate ventilation or a suitable, safely used heat source.
  • Cooking and sanitation: There was no built-in kitchen or bathroom reported for the original HitchHiker. Keep combustion cooking and fuel storage consistent with appliance instructions and campground rules, and make a separate plan for water, waste and toilets.
  • Storage and restraint: Loose gear becomes a problem on rough roads and during hard braking. Secure it and preserve a clear exit path to the door.

What the current manufacturer claims—and what remains unproven here

Freedom Campers says its units are U.S.-made in Lamar, Missouri, have four-season insulation, and carry a three-year limited warranty. Those are useful buying considerations, but they should be read as manufacturer statements. The available material does not establish independent cold-weather performance, water-ingress testing, crash testing, or a universal certification that the camper will fit within every truck’s payload or every trailer’s rating. Ask for the current warranty terms and installation documentation for the exact configuration before buying.

Is it still a good value?

At its 2024 US$2,750 launch price, the HitchHiker was an unusually inexpensive route to a lockable hard-sided sleep pod. The current Freedom Camper is no longer accurately described as a sub-US$3,000 new camper. Its value case is instead modularity: one lightweight shell can serve a suitable truck bed or utility trailer, without forcing the owner to keep a dedicated camper trailer.

That trade-off favors buyers who already have a capable pickup or trailer, accept a hands-on installation, and want to build only the amenities they actually use. It is less compelling for someone who wants a turnkey RV with a kitchen, toilet, fixed electrical system, tested all-weather performance, or no setup work. Before treating either price as final, recheck the current configuration, freight quote and included equipment with Freedom Campers or an authorized dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Freedom Camper a trailer by itself?

No. The original HitchHiker and current Freedom Camper are hard-sided sleeping pods that require a suitable pickup bed or a trailer/platform beneath them. They are not chassis-equipped trailers on their own.

Will it fit my pickup?

Not safely as a general claim. Measure the exact bed and wheel wells, confirm whether a raised platform is required, and check the specific truck’s door-jamb payload label after adding the camper, platform, people, bedding, power equipment, water and gear.

Does it include a mattress, kitchen, toilet, or off-grid power?

No. The original HitchHiker was reported with room for a full-size mattress, but no mattress included, and no built-in kitchen or bathroom was reported. Current listings and any accessories should be checked configuration by configuration.

Is it still a sub-US$3,000 camper?

The old US$2,750 figure was the February 2024 launch price. The current official direct listings reviewed for the Freedom Camper show US$3,499.99 for the Truck Bed Camper and from US$3,439.99 for the Trailer Camper, before freight and other ownership costs.

The Bottom Line

The US$2,750 HitchHiker belongs to the 2024 launch story. Today’s Freedom Camper keeps the flexible truck-bed-or-trailer concept, but the real purchase decision is fitment, secure mounting, payload and the cost of the systems you will add—not the old headline price.
