A small decal is easier to place on a limited area; a hood graphic creates a much larger visual change and requires more careful measurement and fitting. Neither format is automatically better: choose based on the panel, the look you want, and the amount of installation work you are prepared to take on.
What to check before ordering
Dimensions and placement
Measure the flat or usable area where the graphic will go, not just the vehicle’s overall panel. Check the seller’s listed finished size and leave room for panel edges, trim, seams, curves, and any location where the artwork could be obstructed. For a hood graphic, follow the seller’s measurement instructions and confirm how much excess material is intended for trimming.
Background or cut artwork
A decal with no background leaves the vehicle’s paint visible around and between the design elements. That can create a cleaner, integrated look, but it also means the artwork’s cut shape matters: inspect the listing images and ask the seller if it is unclear whether the product is a cut decal, a printed rectangle, or a larger sheet to trim.

Surface and material
Ask whether the film is intended for automotive exterior use and whether it suits the panel you have in mind. Decals.com describes cast vinyl as more conformable for curves and contours, while calendered vinyl is a lower-cost option typically suited to flatter panels. Calendered vs. cast vinyl: what is the difference?
According to Decals.com, cast film is more conformable and suited to more complex curves, while calendered film is a lower-cost choice for flatter surfaces. The seller also gives estimated outdoor lifespans of 3–5 years for laminated calendered film and up to 8 years for cast film. These are vendor estimates, not independent material tests, and they are not specific guarantees for a Batman decal or any particular vehicle. Actual service life for a graphic depends on the film, installation, exposure, and care; check the seller’s written specifications for the product you are buying.
How to prepare and install a vinyl car decal

- Check the instructions and conditions. BattSkins advises working in shade on a cool surface and avoiding direct sunlight, hot panels, and residue from wax or detailing products. Confirm the seller’s temperature and surface requirements before you begin. See BattSkins’ installation instructions.
- Clean the panel. BattSkins recommends rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth. ORAFOL says the surface should be free of dust, grease, and other contaminants, and recommends its pre-wrap cleaner or isopropyl alcohol just before application. Use the cleaner approved for your specific film and vehicle finish; follow ORAFOL’s support guidance and the decal seller’s instructions.
- Position and apply as directed. If the decal uses transfer tape, place it carefully and use a flat tool to press the tape and artwork down. Decals.com also recommends a squeegee or similar flat object. Work according to the product’s method rather than assuming every decal applies the same way.
- Allow time before water or washing. BattSkins says to wait at least 24 hours before exposing a newly installed decal to water and approximately 48–72 hours before washing for stronger adhesion. This is that vendor’s guidance, not a universal cure time; use the instructions for your own film.
- Wash carefully around edges. BattSkins advises avoiding aggressive washing at decal edges. Follow the seller’s care guidance to reduce the chance of lifting or damaging the graphic.
How long do custom car decals last?
The Batman Dark Knight listing from Custom Sticker Shop claims a rating of “5-7 years.” Its page does not state a publication year, and the figure is a seller claim rather than an independent test or a guarantee that applies to every climate, paint surface, installation, or pattern of use. Decals.com’s separate material estimates—3–5 years for laminated calendered film and up to 8 years for cast film—are not specific to that Batman product. Ask the seller what film is used, what conditions its estimate assumes, and whether a written warranty applies to your order.

It would be misleading to promise that removal will never affect paint: the listing does not address the vehicle’s finish or condition, the decal’s age, or the removal method. If you are concerned about a particular vehicle, especially one with existing paint damage or a sensitive finish, ask the decal seller and a qualified vehicle-finish professional for advice before applying it.
