Does Toyota’s solid-state battery have a 745-mile range?
Not according to the Toyota sources cited here. Toyota’s battery presentation gives relative range targets, but it does not state a 745-mile rating or identify a production vehicle that has achieved that distance. The figure’s test cycle, vehicle configuration and origin are not established by Toyota’s published material.
That distinction matters because a battery target, a whole-vehicle range goal and an independently measured production-car result are different claims. Toyota’s presentation establishes development goals, not independent validation or a consumer-car performance result. Toyota’s battery presentation is the relevant primary source for its stated battery targets.
What Toyota says its solid-state battery should deliver
In a June 13, 2023 presentation, Toyota described its all-solid-state battery as a BEV development program and set out the following aims. They are targets, not demonstrated results.

The 20% and 50% figures use Toyota’s next-generation performance square battery as their comparison point. Neither supports calling the solid-state battery a 745-mile battery without a stated vehicle, baseline mileage and measurement method. Toyota’s presentation also discusses other battery programs, so their figures and timelines should not be treated as solid-state specifications.
Why Toyota’s 1,000 km target is a separate figure
Toyota separately described a next-generation BEV planned for 2026 with a 1,000 km cruising-range target. That is a vehicle-level goal, and Toyota says it includes efficiency measures such as improved aerodynamics and lower weight. It is not the solid-state battery’s stated range, and Toyota’s presentation does not say that the 1,000 km vehicle target is achieved by the solid-state program. How Toyota and Idemitsu are working toward production
On October 12, 2023, Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan announced cooperation focused on developing technology for mass-producing solid electrolytes, improving productivity and establishing a supply chain. Their work targets sulfide solid electrolytes.
- Develop the electrolyte: The companies said they would work on materials and prepare for production using a large pilot facility.
- Build production capability: The pilot facility is intended to support production work and improvements in quality, cost and productivity.
- Study full-scale mass production: The announcement presents full-scale mass production as a later step to study, not as an already completed capability.
The companies named 2027–2028 as their commercialization target. Toyota CEO Koji Sato said, “The key theme for us going forward is mass production.” The announcement makes clear that stable supply, quality and cost remain part of the work. Toyota and Idemitsu’s cooperation announcement describes the partnership and its stated sequence.

Why solid-state battery durability is still a challenge
Toyota and Idemitsu identified cracking at the interfaces between cathodes, anodes and solid electrolytes during repeated charging and discharging as a durability problem that can degrade battery performance. Toyota said the companies had developed a crack-resistant material through repeated trials, describing it as flexible and adhesive. That progress does not by itself establish long-term vehicle durability or readiness for mass production; the same announcement lists quality, cost, stable supply and production as work still to address. Toyota presents solid-state batteries as one future BEV option within a broader, multi-pathway approach—not as a replacement for every powertrain or battery chemistry. Its battery presentation also describes liquid lithium-ion routes aimed at different cost and performance needs, including low-cost LFP and high-performance lithium-ion options. The company’s broader strategy discusses adapting powertrains and technology to different regional conditions. Toyota’s technology announcement outlines that wider approach.

For now, the sound reading of Toyota’s plans is that it is pursuing solid-state batteries while developing other battery and vehicle options. The published targets signal direction and ambition; they do not establish a 745-mile Toyota, a tested 10-minute charge or a confirmed date when customers can buy a solid-state BEV.
