What has Toyota confirmed about the Shanghai Lexus EV?
Toyota announced on February 5, 2025, that it would establish a wholly owned company in Jinshan District, southwest Shanghai, to develop and produce battery-electric vehicles and batteries. The announced vehicle program is for the Lexus brand. Toyota said production was scheduled to start “from 2027 onwards,” with initial annual capacity of approximately 100,000 units and about 1,000 jobs planned for the startup phase. Toyota’s announcement does not name a model or specify its body style.
The announcement also described a comprehensive partnership with Shanghai focused on carbon neutrality, including cooperation involving hydrogen energy, automated driving technology, and battery recycling and reuse.
When will the vehicle be built, and is it an SUV?
Toyota’s confirmed timing is production from 2027 onward. A September 2, 2026 GoAuto report says the first vehicle is an unnamed Lexus electric SUV expected to enter production in the second half of 2027. Those more specific details come from the report, not Toyota’s announcement.

Shanghai’s government reported that construction began on June 27, 2025. It gave a target completion date of August 2026 and said operations were expected in 2027, with annual capacity of 100,000 vehicles. These are project targets reported by the city; they do not establish that construction has since finished or that the factory is already operating. Why is Toyota building a Lexus EV in China?
Toyota says the goal is to supply products that meet customers’ needs more quickly in China, where demand for new energy vehicles is high. Its announcement presents the Shanghai company as a way to respond faster in that market, rather than as a confirmed export hub.

Gigacasting uses large die-casting equipment to make substantial structural sections of a vehicle body as single pieces, rather than assembling many stamped pieces by welding. GoAuto says Toyota has claimed the process can reduce the weight of affected body structures by around 20 percent, improve rigidity, and reduce parts and manufacturing steps. Toyota has not announced export markets for the vehicle, and GoAuto says it has not indicated whether the SUV will be exported. The confirmed information establishes a China-based project, not a global launch. Range, battery chemistry, pricing, dimensions, trims, and availability are also not stated in the cited sources.
