The new BMW i3 and gasoline-powered 3 Series share Neue Klasse styling, cabin technology and digital controls, but they are not the same car with different engines. The i3 is fully electric; the combustion models use petrol engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. BMW also says their vehicle architectures, dimensions and chassis tuning differ. The result is a common family identity built around distinct engineering.
What the new 3 Series and i3 share
BMW has applied its Neue Klasse design language across the new 3 Series family. The electric i3 and combustion-engined versions therefore share a broad visual identity rather than looking like unrelated models. BMW describes the i3 as a sedan with a 2.5-box silhouette, long wheelbase and short overhangs; its grille and twin headlights combine into one front graphic. BMW’s October 2026 model overview and the i3 announcement describe the design.
Cabin and digital operating system
The family also shares an interior concept and digital operating system. Panoramic iDrive brings together Panoramic Vision, a central display and a multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls. An optional 3D Head-Up Display is also available. Shared controls and interface do not mean the cars share a powertrain or identical underlying construction.
Where the engineering diverges
Electric i3 versus petrol 3 Series
The i3 is the first fully electric 3 Series based on Neue Klasse. BMW’s European launch information lists the i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive. The combustion-engined family instead uses petrol engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology; names and availability vary by market. BMW also refers to plug-in-hybrid drive systems in its description of the wider 3 Series family, but the specific models offered depend on the market.

BMW does not identify the gasoline model’s platform designation in the official material cited here. It is more accurate to describe the distinction as different vehicle architectures and drive systems than to assign the combustion car a platform name that BMW has not specified in these sources.
Different dimensions and chassis tuning
BMW says the architecture differences lead to variations in exterior dimensions, wheelbases, overhangs and track widths. It also says the chassis and driving-dynamics controls are tailored to each drive system. So although the cars are recognizably members of one design family, their proportions and handling hardware are not simply identical beneath the bodywork.

Drive-specific control systems
The i3’s Heart of Joy and BMW Dynamic Performance Control are developed for the sixth-generation electric-drive architecture. BMW says combustion models use a separately optimized driving stack and drive-system-specific chassis tuning. That distinction matters: a shared operating-system and design strategy does not imply the same way of managing propulsion or vehicle dynamics.
What the electric i3’s range and charging figures mean
BMW’s October 2026 English overview gives German-market WLTP figures of up to 912 kilometres (567 miles) for the i3 50 xDrive and up to 710 kilometres (441 miles) for the i3 40 xDrive. These are manufacturer figures, not guarantees of real-world distance; actual range varies with conditions. WLTP figures should not be treated as directly comparable to US EPA estimates, which use a different test cycle.

For the i3 50 xDrive, BMW claims up to 400 kW charging and says a suitable DC fast charger can add up to 423 kilometres (263 miles) in ten minutes. BMW lists up to 300 kW for the i3 40 xDrive. Charging power and distance added depend on the vehicle, charger and charging conditions; the ten-minute figure is BMW’s claim, not a universal charging result. The figures here are from BMW’s October 2026 overview, which updates the up-to-900-kilometre preliminary figure in its March 2026 announcement.
Where BMW builds the cars
BMW says the electric i3 is built at Plant Munich, while the combustion models are produced in Dingolfing. The i3’s sixth-generation battery comes from Irlbach-Strasskirchen, and its Gen6 motor is manufactured at Steyr. BMW says more than nine million 3 Series vehicles have been built at Plant Munich since 1975; separately, it reports more than 18 million 3 Series sold worldwide since 1975. These are BMW’s own production and sales figures.

Why market and date matter when comparing specifications
BMW’s model names, availability and specifications vary by country. Its UK release identifies the i3 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive and labels the figures provisional; its US release gives US-specific launch details and estimates. The range and charging figures above are the later October 2026 German-market WLTP information, not universal specifications.
