Toyota announced a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 for the GR GT, but the car is not mid-engine: Toyota describes it as a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive hybrid. Its GR GT3 racing counterpart also uses a V-8, while the Lexus LFA Concept is a separate battery-electric concept—not another V-8 supercar.
Which Toyota gets the new V-8?
The engine was announced for the GR GT at Toyota Motor Corporation and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s world premiere on December 5, 2025. Toyota describes it as a newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with dry-sump lubrication. The GR GT is a road-car prototype that was still being refined at its premiere, not a confirmed retail production model. Toyota’s announcement does not state a final system output.

Is the GR GT mid-engine?
No. Toyota identifies the GR GT as front-engine and rear-wheel drive. Its drivetrain uses a carbon-fiber torque tube connected to a rear transaxle, which houses an eight-speed automatic transmission, a single electric motor and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The electric motor means the road-car GR GT is a hybrid; it does not make the car mid-engine. Toyota’s technical description and the premiere transcript distinguish the hybrid road car from the racing model.

| Vehicle | Purpose and status | Powertrain |
|---|---|---|
| GR GT | Road-car prototype; Toyota said it was still being refined at the December 2025 premiere. | Front-engine, rear-wheel drive; hybrid system with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. |
| GR GT3 | Separate race-car prototype based on the GR GT and developed for FIA GT3 customer racing. | Shares the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 and aluminum spaceframe architecture; the premiere transcript distinguishes it from the road car’s hybrid version. |
| Lexus LFA Concept | Battery-electric sports-car concept developed alongside the GR models. | Battery electric, not V-8-powered. |
Toyota presented the GR GT and GR GT3 as related projects, but they are not interchangeable descriptions of one car: the GR GT is the hybrid road-car prototype, while the GR GT3 is intended for customer racing under FIA GT3 regulations. Lexus says the LFA Concept shares development techniques and aspirations with the GR projects while exploring the possibilities of battery-electric packaging. What is known about the Lexus LFA Concept?
Lexus identifies the LFA Concept as a battery-electric sports-car concept, not a production car and not a V-8-powered GR GT variant. Lexus USA lists manufacturer-estimated concept dimensions of 184.6 inches long, 80.3 inches wide and 47.0 inches high, with a 107.3-inch wheelbase and seating for two. These are concept specifications, not final production-car measurements. Lexus USA’s concept announcement provides those estimates.
Lexus Canada reported that the LFA Concept made dynamic runs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 9–12, 2026, alongside GR GT and GR GT3 prototypes. That public appearance shows the concept was driven at the event; it does not establish a retail launch or production availability. Lexus Canada’s Goodwood announcement describes the appearance.

Are the GR GT or LFA Concept on sale?
The cited official announcements do not establish a final price, market availability, launch date or complete production specification for the GR GT, GR GT3 or LFA Concept. Toyota said the GR GT was still under refinement at its December 2025 premiere, and Lexus calls the LFA a concept. Treat announced layouts and powertrains as disclosed development information, not as a complete specification for cars confirmed for sale.
