BMW Motorrad positions the R 12 G/S as a retro enduro: a modern adventure motorcycle styled as a tribute to the Paris-Dakar era. Its official story shows gravel, water and sand riding, but those scenes are promotional material—not evidence from an independent test. The appeal BMW emphasizes is the blend of heritage, adventure and enjoyable riding.
What the BMW R 12 G/S is
BMW lists the R 12 G/S in its current model range as a retro enduro. The name’s slash is part of BMW’s official model styling. BMW frames the bike as an adventure motorcycle inspired by the Paris-Dakar machines that helped define the GS image.

In BMW Motorrad’s story, the company describes its intent this way: “With the new BMW R 12 G/S, BMW Motorrad is celebrating adventures on two wheels.” That is brand positioning, not an independent assessment of the bike’s performance.
What BMW’s adventure scenes show—and don’t show
BMW’s promotional story depicts the R 12 G/S on gravel, through water and across sand, presenting it in an off-road adventure setting. Those images communicate the kind of riding BMW wants the model to evoke; they do not establish how it performs in a controlled test or what terrain it is suitable for every rider to tackle.

BMW says the film was shot with nine cameras, including a high-speed camera recording at 800 images per second. The accessed story does not show a publication year for that production detail, so the figure should not be read as a model-year specification.
Paris-Dakar heritage in BMW’s story
BMW connects the R 12 G/S with the marque’s Paris-Dakar history. According to BMW’s account, Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, appears in the story riding the original R 80 G/S Paris-Dakar bike that won in 1984. The reference anchors the new model’s retro styling in a specific piece of BMW’s rally heritage.
