There is no official confirmation that Toyota has a new pickup-and-SUV pair arriving in time to compete with Scout. Toyota has announced a North American Highlander BEV expected in late 2026, a Hilux BEV planned for rollout in Asia and Japan, and the EPU pickup as a concept. Those announcements do not establish the U.S.-market pairing or schedule implied by the headline. Scout, meanwhile, targets initial production in 2027 and customer deliveries in 2028 for its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV.
Is Toyota launching a pickup and SUV to compete with Scout?
Not as a confirmed pair, based on Toyota’s published announcements. The closest announced Toyota SUV is the Highlander BEV, which Toyota says is expected to begin North American sales in late 2026. Its Hilux BEV announcement concerns an Asia and Japan rollout, not a U.S. launch. Toyota’s EPU is a pickup concept, and the company’s 2023 announcement does not give it a production schedule.
That means a direct Toyota-versus-Scout launch-date comparison would be premature. The models differ in how firmly their production plans and intended markets have been established.
What Toyota has actually announced
Highlander BEV: a North American SUV planned for late 2026
Toyota Motor Corporation said on February 11, 2026, that sales of the Highlander BEV in North America are expected to begin in late 2026. The announcement includes two battery specifications. For the AWD version with a 95.82 kWh battery, Toyota lists a development target of up to 320 miles; that is a company target, not an independently tested result. Toyota’s Highlander BEV announcement.

Hilux BEV: an Asia-focused rollout, not a confirmed U.S. truck
Toyota’s November 2025 release says the Hilux BEV debuted in Asia and that rollout was planned to begin in Asia from 2026, with Japan-bound models planned for mid-2026. It lists a 59.2 kWh battery and a range statement of 300 km or more. The release does not establish a U.S. launch. Toyota’s Hilux BEV announcement.
EPU: a pickup concept without announced production timing
Toyota presented the EPU as a next-generation mid-size pickup BEV concept at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. Toyota described a monocoque body and seating for five, but did not announce production timing in that release. The EPU should not be treated as a confirmed retail pickup. When are Scout’s Terra and Traveler expected?
Scout Motors’ March 2026 guidance targets initial production in 2027, with customer deliveries expected to begin in 2028. Scout says the Traveler SUV is expected to enter production first; it has not specified how long afterward Terra production would begin. These are company targets and expectations, not confirmed dates for a particular customer’s delivery. Scout Motors’ newsroom.
Scout’s planned lineup comprises the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup. Both are planned with all-electric and gasoline range-extended configurations. At their 2024 reveal, Scout projected up to 350 miles for battery-electric models and more than 500 miles for range-extended models. Those are company projections, not independently verified test results. Scout’s 2024 vehicle reveal.

What can be compared today?
| Vehicle or plan | Role and powertrain | Timing and market | Published range or price information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Highlander BEV | BEV SUV | North American sales expected to begin in late 2026, according to Toyota | Up to 320 miles for AWD with a 95.82 kWh battery; Toyota development target |
| Toyota Hilux BEV | BEV pickup | Rollout planned in Asia from 2026; Japan-bound models planned for mid-2026. No U.S. launch established | 59.2 kWh battery; range stated as 300 km or more by Toyota |
| Toyota EPU | Mid-size BEV pickup concept | Shown in 2023; production timing not stated in Toyota’s announcement | Not stated in Toyota’s concept announcement |
| Scout Traveler and Terra | SUV and pickup; BEV and range-extended configurations planned | Initial production targeted for 2027; customer deliveries expected in 2028. Traveler production first; exact Terra interval not stated | Scout projected up to 350 miles for BEV and more than 500 miles for range-extended models at the 2024 reveal. Retail starting prices targeted below $60,000 for both, not final MSRP |
The figures are not a like-for-like comparison: Toyota’s Highlander number is a development target for a specified AWD battery configuration, while Scout’s range figures are projections for powertrain categories. Scout’s under-$60,000 figure is a targeted starting price, not a final MSRP. Scout’s current newsroom guidance.

That timing claim is not established. Toyota’s Highlander BEV is expected in North America in late 2026, while Scout targets initial production in 2027 and deliveries in 2028. But Toyota has not confirmed that the EPU will become a production pickup, and the announced Hilux BEV rollout is regional rather than a confirmed U.S. launch. The available announcements therefore do not show a confirmed Toyota pickup-and-SUV pair arriving alongside Scout’s models.
