Toyota has already launched its new compact off-roader, but it is officially called the Land Cruiser FJ—not the FJ Cruiser. Japan sales began May 14, 2026, and Toyota has also announced launches in the Philippines and Iraq. Toyota has not announced a U.S. launch, so availability and specifications depend on the market.
Is Toyota bringing back the FJ Cruiser?
Not under that name. Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser FJ in October 2025 and describes it as a new member of the Land Cruiser family, alongside the 300, 70 and 250 series. The “FJ” stands for “Freedom & Joy.”
Toyota’s chief engineer drew a distinction from the former North American FJ Cruiser: “although the name is similar to the ‘FJ Cruiser,’ which supported the active lifestyle of young people in North America, the Land Cruiser ‘FJ’ focuses on ‘supporting lifestyles globally.’ For this reason, its concept differs significantly from the FJ Cruiser right from the development stage.” The statement appears in Toyota’s Land Cruiser FJ Points document.
Where is the Land Cruiser FJ on sale?
Toyota says Japanese sales began May 14, 2026. Toyota Motor Philippines announced nationwide retail sales beginning July 20, 2026, with TX and VX variants. Toyota Iraq reported a launch across multiple Iraqi cities on September 9, 2026. These announcements establish availability in those markets only; they do not establish a launch elsewhere.

What are the Land Cruiser FJ’s specifications?
There is no single set of figures that should be treated as universal: Toyota’s October 2025 world premiere gave prototype measurements, while later market announcements describe production-market vehicles with some differences.
Japan
Toyota’s May 2026 Japanese launch release describes a 2.7-liter gasoline engine producing 120 kW (163 PS) and 246 N·m, paired with a six-speed Super ECT. It also identifies the vehicle’s ladder frame. These are the figures in Toyota’s Japan announcement, not a guarantee of identical output or equipment in every market.

Philippines
Toyota Philippines lists a 2.7-liter 2TR-FE engine rated at 166 hp and 245 Nm, a six-speed automatic and part-time 4WD. Its published dimensions and ground clearance are:

October 2025 premiere figures were prototype specifications
At its October 2025 world premiere, Toyota described a two-row, five-passenger layout, 2TR-FE 2.7-liter gasoline engine, part-time 4WD and six-speed Super ECT. The prototype measurements were 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,960 mm high and had a 2,580 mm wheelbase. Toyota also said the wheelbase was 270 mm shorter than the 250 Series and gave a minimum turning radius of 5.5 m. Treat these as premiere-stage prototype figures, not as a substitute for a market’s production specifications.

The differences between premiere, Japan and Philippines figures are why it is important to check the local Toyota specification sheet rather than combine numbers from different markets into one supposed global spec.

The Iraq launch notice names Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a 12.3-inch multimedia display and a 360-degree panoramic camera. Those are Iraq-announcement details; they do not establish that every market or trim includes the same equipment.
Toyota has also described customization options, including MOLLE panels for attaching outdoor equipment. Its Japan release refers to dealer-installed customization and ARB exterior accessories. Accessory availability and fitment can vary by region, trim and vehicle configuration, so check local Toyota information before buying or recommending a specific part.

What the launch does—and does not—tell buyers
Toyota’s May 2026 Japan release says the Land Cruiser family had reached about 12.4 million cumulative units in more than 190 countries and regions. That is a total for the Land Cruiser family, not sales of the new FJ.
The company announcements establish launch timing, selected market specifications and stated equipment; they do not provide independent road-test results, real-world fuel economy, reliability outcomes, comparative performance or dealer inventory. For a purchase decision, confirm local availability, trim, price and equipment with Toyota in the country where you plan to buy.
