For buyers who want a rugged, body-on-frame SUV with stronger torque and modern cabin technology, the redesigned 2025 Toyota 4Runner makes a convincing case that the wait was worthwhile. It is a major update after the outgoing generation’s roughly 15-year run, but it still drives like a truck-based SUV, costs more as you move up the range, and drops the old V6. Whether that trade is worth it depends on what you want from a 4Runner.
What changed after the 4Runner’s long run?
The 2025 model is the sixth-generation 4Runner. Car and Driver describes the previous generation as having lasted a decade and a half, so “15 years” is an approximate generation interval—not a promise that every model year was unchanged.

The new 4Runner moves to Toyota’s TNGA-F truck platform, also used by the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota specifies a high-strength boxed-steel ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link coil rear suspension. The SUV keeps familiar cues such as its wrap-over quarter glass and roll-down rear window, while its rear seats tumble to help create a cargo floor. Toyota says the revised platform and suspension improve ride comfort; that is the manufacturer’s claim, while independent road impressions are discussed below.

The 2025 range has nine grades, from the SR5 to the off-road-focused TRD models, luxury-oriented Platinum, TRD Pro and overlanding-oriented Trailhunter. Toyota says Trailhunter includes integrated equipment from ARB, Old Man Emu and RIGID Industries. Equipment and powertrain availability vary by grade, so buyers should check the specification for the exact model year and trim they are considering.

Which engine makes sense?
The old V6 is gone. Every 2025 4Runner instead uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic, either as the standard i-FORCE gas powertrain or as the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Toyota’s January 2025 specifications give the gas engine 278 hp and 317 lb-ft; the hybrid is rated at up to 326 net combined hp and 465 lb-ft.

Both engines emphasize torque, but the hybrid has a substantial published advantage in output. It is not offered across the entire range, and Toyota’s estimated highway maxima should not be treated as typical mileage or compared as though every trim has the same drivetrain. Car and Driver lists 21–22 mpg combined for the gas model depending on drivetrain. Its reviewed Limited 4WD returned a stated 21 mpg combined, with 20 city and 24 highway in the review specifications.

How does it drive on road and off?
Car and Driver measured a four-wheel-drive 2025 4Runner at 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. That is the outlet’s result for its tested vehicle, not a Toyota claim or a performance figure for every engine and trim. The review found road manners noticeably improved over the previous generation, but still described the SUV as clumsy and ponderous enough to feel like a truck-based vehicle.
That distinction captures the redesign’s character: it is more refined, not transformed into a car-like crossover. Buyers who value a traditional frame-based SUV and off-road equipment may see that as a feature; those who mainly want easy urban handling may not.

Off-road hardware depends on grade. Car and Driver notes available features including a locking rear differential, disconnecting stabilizer bars and off-road cruise control. Toyota positions Trailhunter as the overlanding grade with integrated supplier equipment. Confirm which items are included on the specific configuration rather than assuming every 4Runner has the same capability kit.
What are towing and fuel-economy figures?
Toyota and Car and Driver cite a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds for the 2025 range, with Toyota’s specifications specifically announcing up to 6,000 pounds for the hybrid. Treat 6,000 pounds as a configuration-dependent maximum, not a rating for every 4Runner; verify the tow rating for the exact trim and drivetrain.

Fuel-economy numbers need the same care. Toyota’s December 2024 launch announcement estimated up to 26 mpg highway for i-FORCE and up to 24 mpg highway for i-FORCE MAX. Those are stated maxima, not combined ratings for all configurations. For the gas model, Car and Driver lists 21–22 mpg combined depending on drivetrain, and its tested Limited 4WD is listed at 21 mpg combined.

Is the cabin and technology upgrade substantial?
Yes: the interior is substantially more modern, and Car and Driver says the dashboard and infotainment arrangement share much with the Tacoma. The 2025 specification includes an 8-inch standard infotainment display, with a 14-inch display and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports and digital key are also listed. Toyota says Toyota Audio Multimedia and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 are standard across 2025 grades.

Car and Driver lists standard driver assistance including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering. The available third row is cramped for adults; it is better understood as occasional or child seating than as a practical adult-sized third row.
What does the 2025 4Runner cost?
Price depends on trim and market timing. Toyota’s December 2024 launch announcement listed a historical starting MSRP of $40,770, plus $1,450 delivery, processing and handling (DPH). Car and Driver’s review page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists an MSRP range of $42,865–$59,495. These are different dated listings, not a guarantee of current dealer pricing or a direct transaction-price comparison; check Toyota’s current model-year pricing and local inventory before buying.
So, was the wait worth it?
Car and Driver rated the 2025 gas model 8.5/10, praising its improved driving dynamics, more spacious and modern interior, and retained off-road capability. Its reservations include that the turbo-four could use more power, the higher trims require choosing the hybrid, and the optional third row is cramped.

The redesign is easiest to recommend if you want the 4Runner’s body-on-frame, off-road-oriented identity with updated technology and more torque—especially if the hybrid’s output and your preferred trim line up. It is a less obvious choice if low cost, car-like road manners, an old-style V6, or comfortable adult third-row seating matter most. The available information does not establish a population-level reliability statistic or long-term comparative reliability result, so Toyota’s durability reputation alone cannot prove how the new generation will fare over time.
