Yes—Toyota’s first production sports car was the diminutive Sports 800, a lightweight two-seat model that reached the Japanese market in April 1965. It grew out of the 1962 Publica Sports concept, but the production car traded that show car’s sliding canopy for conventional doors and a removable roof panel.
From concept to production car
The timeline matters: Toyota unveiled the Publica Sports concept at the 1962 Tokyo Motor Show. The company announced the production Sports 800 in March 1965, then put it on the market in April. Toyota UK describes the Sports 800 as Toyota’s first production sports car—a precise claim that distinguishes it from the earlier concept and does not rule on every experimental vehicle Toyota may have built.
The concept’s striking sliding canopy did not make it into production. The Sports 800 instead had conventional doors and a detachable roof panel that could be stowed in the boot. Toyota UK’s historical account describes the change as a move away from a dramatic but impractical canopy to traditional doors and a removable roof. The result retained an open-air character while making the car more practical to use.

Small, light, and built from familiar parts
Toyota designed the Sports 800 as an accessible sports car, drawing primarily on components from the Publica. Toyota’s corporate development history says the approach helped keep the car inexpensive and easy to use. Its body also used aluminum alloy, contributing to a low curb mass.

The period figures underline the Sports 800’s unusual proposition: a compact, low-mass car with a modest two-cylinder engine rather than a large, high-output powerplant. Toyota’s development history reports fuel efficiency of 31 km/L. Toyota UK separately describes consumption as low as 3.8 L/100 km. Those are figures published by different Toyota sources; neither should be treated as a modern independent test result, and the available accounts do not establish that their measurement methods are directly comparable.
Why the Sports 800 mattered to Toyota
The Sports 800 helped establish a version of Toyota’s sports-car identity rooted in efficiency and accessibility. Toyota’s development account presents the car as light, inexpensive, and easy to use at a time when interest in motorsport was growing. It was not simply a smaller take on a powerful grand tourer: its character came from using modest power in a particularly light package.

That approach had a competition record, too. Toyota’s vehicle history says the Sports 800 finished third in the 1967 Fuji 24-hour race, behind two Toyota 2000GTs. The result placed the small car in the same endurance-racing field as Toyota’s more powerful sports car and gave the Sports 800 a role in the company’s early motorsport story.

The clearest answer is that the Sports 800 was Toyota’s first production sports car, according to Toyota UK. The Publica Sports shown in 1962 was a concept, not the market model. The Sports 800 was the production car that followed, announced in March and released in April 1965.
