How many Toyota Yaris hatchback generations are there?
Toyota UK describes four successive generations of the global Yaris hatchback, with the first introduced in 1999. Its first-generation archive covers 1999–2006. This is a global/UK historical framing—not evidence that every one of those model years was sold as a Yaris hatchback in the United States. Toyota UK’s 25-year Yaris history and its Yaris archive provide that context.
For U.S. shoppers and owners, use Toyota’s U.S. model-year references instead of applying the global generation count directly. Toyota’s available U.S. archive pages group early Yaris Liftback material into date ranges, but do not establish a complete, authoritative year-by-year chronology or a definitive U.S. generation mapping for every year.

The archive groupings above are not proof of the model years between them. The cited U.S. sources do not resolve a complete hatchback year list or a generation label for every U.S. year, so avoid filling gaps by assuming the global chronology applies.

Why U.S. and global generation labels differ
“Generation” can refer to Toyota’s global Yaris history or to a particular market’s model lineup. Toyota UK’s four-generation account begins in 1999, while Toyota USA’s sources establish specific U.S. hatchback milestones: early Liftback archive groupings, a redesigned 2015 model, and a hatchback new for 2020. These are different scopes, not competing counts.
When identifying or comparing a Yaris, state the market and model year, then specify the body style. This is especially important for the three-door and five-door 2015 liftbacks documented by Toyota. Do not transfer a global generation name or code to a U.S. car unless a source establishes that mapping for that market and year.

Which model-year information should owners use?
For manuals, service information, or parts, match the resource to the exact model year, market, and configuration rather than relying on a broad generation label. Toyota Owners lists a 2009 Yaris Hatchback owner’s manual. A separate Yaris manuals archive indexes owner, repair, and service manuals across generations, but it is a third-party resource; confirm that any manual or listing specifically covers your vehicle before using it.
