Toyota Tundra Engine Recalls: Are Dealers Refusing Trade-Ins?

Some Tundra owners reported trade-in refusals while engine recalls lacked remedies, but the reports do not establish a nationwide policy. Check your VIN and confirm both remedy and buyer status directly.

Some Tundra owners reported being turned away when trying to trade in trucks with open engine recalls, but the available reports do not show a nationwide dealer policy or how often refusals happen today. Toyota’s recalls apply to specific vehicles, not every V6 Tundra. Check the truck’s VIN, confirm its remedy status with Toyota, and ask any prospective buyer how it handles that exact vehicle.

Is every V6 Toyota Tundra affected?

No. Recall coverage depends on the specific vehicle and campaign. Toyota’s announcements identify certain model years and configurations; they do not establish that every Tundra with a V6 is affected. Check the VIN using Toyota’s recall lookup or the NHTSA recall lookup before making decisions based on a general model-year headline.

The campaigns have different scopes and dates. Toyota’s May 30, 2024 dealer notice covered approximately 98,600 certain 2022–2023 Tundras and said the remedy was still being developed at that time. In a November 6, 2025 announcement, Toyota described approximately 127,000 Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicles in the United States, including certain 2022–2024 Tundras, 2022–2024 Lexus LX vehicles, and 2024 Lexus GX vehicles; the stated scope was conventional-gas models. That count is across the listed vehicles, not Tundras alone.

Toyota’s May 20, 2026 announcement added approximately 44,000 certain 2024 non-hybrid Tundras in the United States. These figures describe separate announcements and should not be added together: campaign scopes and model years may overlap. Eligibility for an individual truck is determined by its VIN and current campaign status, not by combining published totals. See Toyota’s May 2026 announcement and its November 2025 announcement.

What is the engine concern, and what symptoms matter?

Toyota says machining debris left in covered engines may damage the #1 main bearing. The company lists possible symptoms including knocking, rough running, a no-start condition, or loss of motive power. Toyota warns that loss of motive power at higher speeds can increase crash risk. A symptom alone does not determine recall eligibility; use the VIN lookup and contact a Toyota dealer about the truck’s condition.

Toyota’s May 2026 release says engines produced after those included in that recall were made with an improved #1 main bearing intended to help resist certain debris that might remain. That statement describes later-produced engines relative to that campaign; it is not a substitute for checking a specific vehicle’s recall record.

What is Toyota’s latest stated remedy status?

As of its May 20, 2026 announcement, Toyota said it was completing remedy preparations for the May 2026 recall and the separate recall announced in November 2025, with customer notifications planned in phases as remedies became available. The same announcement said that, for the separate May 2024 recall, more than 77,000 of approximately 102,000 covered U.S. vehicles had been repaired using engines produced with the improved #1 main bearing. These repair-progress figures apply to that 2024 campaign, not to the later campaigns.

Toyota’s May 2026 release directs owners to bring their vehicle in for a free repair when notified that a remedy is available. Recall status can change; Toyota notes that its recall information is current as of the filing date and subject to change. Check the VIN again and ask a Toyota dealer whether a remedy is currently available for that vehicle. See the Toyota May 2026 recall notice for the company’s dated status.

Are Toyota dealers refusing Tundra trade-ins?

There are documented reports of individual refusals, but they do not establish a general policy or current refusal rate. A Quartz article republishing Jalopnik reporting, updated August 6, 2024, described owners whose proposed trades were declined while recalls had no remedy. In one account, a Castle Automotive representative cited two severe recalls without remedies when explaining that the dealership was not interested in taking the truck on trade or purchasing it. That was a dealer representative’s explanation in a reported case, not a Toyota policy.

The account is evidence that refusals occurred in those cases, not that every dealer rejects every recalled Tundra or that refusals remain widespread today. It also does not quantify any recall-related loss in resale or trade-in value. Read the August 2024 report as dated owner and dealer accounts, rather than a representative survey.

Can I trade in a Tundra with an open engine recall?

Possibly, but no cited source establishes a universal acceptance rule. A dealership, online vehicle buyer, or private buyer may assess a specific truck differently, and acceptance can depend on its VIN and recall status. The 2024 report mentioned CarMax, Carvana, and private sale as alternatives discussed with owners; it does not establish those buyers’ current policies or guarantee that any will accept a recalled vehicle.

Before making a trip or relying on an offer, disclose the VIN and open recall and ask the buyer to confirm its policy. Compare actual offers rather than assuming that a particular channel will accept the truck or that the recall produces a fixed discount. No representative valuation study or measured recall-related price effect is established by the cited reports.

What should an owner do next?

  1. Check the truck’s VIN. Use Toyota’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether a campaign is listed for that vehicle.
  2. Ask a Toyota dealer about its status. Confirm whether a remedy is available for the VIN and how to arrange the recall repair. Toyota says recall repairs are provided at no charge; its May 2026 release instructs owners to bring the vehicle in when notified that a remedy is available.
  3. Report concerning symptoms promptly. If the engine is knocking, running roughly, failing to start, or losing power, contact a Toyota dealer for guidance about the vehicle’s condition. Do not treat a recall lookup as a diagnosis.
  4. If selling, contact buyers directly. Give each dealer or other prospective buyer the VIN and the open-recall information, then confirm whether it will accept the truck and request an actual offer.
