Which Toyota models won in 2026?
J.D. Power named Toyota the leading mass-market brand and recognized six Toyota models in the 2026 U.S. award cycle. The official results identify three of the model winners by segment:

The six model winners are Toyota’s award recipients, not a claim that every Toyota model outranks every competitor. The awards also recognize segment leaders from other brands. Tesla was the premium-brand winner; Toyota’s brand title was in the mass-market category. J.D. Power’s release and its official winners PDF provide the results.
What does a residual value award measure?
The award recognizes models projected to retain the highest percentage of manufacturer’s suggested retail price at open auction after three years of ownership. It is a forecast, not an observed resale price. J.D. Power says residual value is relevant to leasing because it is a major component in setting lease costs, but actual values can change over a lease term as market conditions and vehicle-specific factors vary.

For the 2026 model-year awards, J.D. Power evaluated 300 models and gave awards to 14 brands across 26 segments. Its stated evaluation considered used-vehicle performance, brand outlook, and product competitiveness. To qualify for a brand award, a brand needed model-line entries in at least two vehicle segments; a segment needed at least four model lines to qualify. Model averages were weighted by sales and trim share within each model line. J.D. Power’s announcement describes the process.
Why did Toyota take the mass-market brand award?
J.D. Power attributed Toyota’s result to strong wholesale retention, solid brand value, and a disciplined approach to rental fleets and incentives. Danny Battaglia, managing director of ALG customer success at J.D. Power, said: “Strong wholesale retention, solid brand value and a disciplined approach on rental fleet and incentives propelled Toyota to the top spot among mainstream brands.” That is the company’s explanation of the result, not proof that any single factor caused the ranking.

What the award can—and cannot—tell a shopper
A strong residual-value outlook can be useful when comparing vehicles or considering a lease, but the award does not provide a projected percentage or dollar resale figure for each Toyota winner in the cited U.S. materials. It also is not a reliability rating, owner-satisfaction study, or promise of savings.
- For a purchase or lease decision, compare the specific vehicle’s price, trim, mileage, equipment, condition, and current local offers.
- Do not assume all Toyota models, or all examples of one model, will retain value identically.
- Treat the award as one comparison signal alongside the terms and market conditions relevant to your own vehicle.
J.D. Power notes that numerous variables affect actual residual values. The 2026 results apply to the U.S. market and 2026 model-year award cycle; they should not be read as a guarantee for a particular buyer, vehicle, or future market.
