There is no clear-cut best Toyota Sienna model year in the available rankings: their recommendations conflict, including over whether 2011 is a strong or weak choice. Treat year-by-year lists as prompts for further checks, not proof that a particular van is reliable or unreliable. For a used Sienna, the individual vehicle’s condition, maintenance history and VIN-specific recall status matter more than an unsupported blanket verdict.
Which Toyota Sienna years are best to buy?
Published Sienna rankings do not agree on a universal winner. One guide favors 2011, 2025 and 2026 while flagging 2012–2020; another favors 2003 and 2016–2020 while flagging 2004–2005; a third ranks 2011 poorly and 2020 among its strongest years. These recommendations use different year ranges and scoring approaches, so they are not directly comparable. See the rankings from Decide Before Buying, Lemonbench and MotorJury.
Complaint and recall counts can help identify questions to ask, but raw totals are not controlled reliability comparisons. They can reflect years in service, reporting patterns, campaign scope and each site’s scoring method; the cited rankings do not establish a single method that resolves their disagreements. Lemonbench also separates 1996–2020 Sienna data from 2021–2025 Sienna Hybrid records and gives September 17, 2026 as the cutoff for its stated complaint counts. Do not combine figures without checking their model labels and dates.
That makes a year ranking a shortlist aid, not a purchase decision. A well-documented, carefully inspected Sienna from a less-favored year may merit consideration; a vehicle from a highly ranked year may not if it has accident damage, poor maintenance or unrepaired recalls.

Should you avoid a particular Sienna year?
The conflicting lists do not support a blanket instruction to avoid an entire model year. The disagreement is especially consequential for 2011: one ranking presents it favorably, while another places it among the weakest. If you are considering a 2011 Sienna, judge the specific van on its records, condition and recall status rather than treating either ranking as conclusive.
One historical recall filing states that approximately 744,400 model-year 2011–2016 Sienna vehicles were covered by a 2016 safety recall. That is the campaign population stated by Toyota, not the number of vehicles still needing repair, a failure rate or evidence that every vehicle has an unresolved issue. Check the specific VIN against Toyota’s 2016 recall filing.
What Sienna recalls should used buyers check?
Check recall status for the actual vehicle, not just its model year. Toyota’s 2025 safety recall notice covers certain 2021–2025 Sienna Hybrid vehicles whose third-row seat-back bolts may not have been tightened to specification. Toyota says dealers will tighten the bolts free of charge and directs owners to enter the full VIN to confirm vehicle-specific recall information. The filing describes a potentially increased injury risk in a crash if an affected seat back does not perform as intended; it does not apply to every Sienna Hybrid from those years. The report lists 167,802 potentially involved vehicles, a production-based population rather than a count of confirmed defects. See Toyota’s remedy notice and the NHTSA recall report.
A separate 2022 Toyota campaign notice lists certain 2021–2022 Sienna Hybrid vehicles in a campaign concerning the Vehicle Stability Control System not defaulting to “On.” Its presence is another reason to check applicability and repair history by VIN rather than assume every vehicle in a model-year range is affected. See Toyota’s 2022 recall notice.

NHTSA says that recalls do not expire and that its VIN tool reports unrepaired recalls associated with the entered vehicle. Use the agency’s recall resources to check before purchase; confirm whether each applicable remedy has been completed.

Once a vehicle appears worth considering, compare the examples themselves in this order:
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Condition: Have a qualified independent mechanic inspect the individual van. Do not let a favorable year ranking stand in for an inspection.
- Maintenance history: Review invoices and records against the maintenance guide for that exact model year. Toyota’s 2019 Sienna Warranty & Maintenance Guide applies to the 2019 model; do not assume its schedule applies to every Sienna year.
- Recall status: Check each VIN for applicable campaigns and verify completion of any required repair.
- Price, mileage and configuration: Compare asking prices and equipment only after the vehicles have cleared the condition, history and recall checks. The cited material does not provide current used-market prices or a controlled value comparison.
For a practical side-by-side, use a table like this and fill it from the vehicles’ records and inspection results:

| Check | Sienna A | Sienna B |

| Model year, trim and configuration | Record from vehicle documents | Record from vehicle documents |
| Mileage and asking price | Record from seller and odometer | Record from seller and odometer |
