In the United States, Toyota’s 2026 pickup lineup consists of two trucks: the midsize Tacoma and full-size Tundra. The right choice depends on the cab and bed you need, how you’ll use the truck, and the exact towing and payload capacity of the configuration you buy—not just the nameplate’s maximum rating.
What Toyota trucks are available in 2026?
Toyota offers the Tacoma and Tundra for the 2026 U.S. model year. Toyota.com lists starting MSRPs of $32,545 for Tacoma and $41,260 for Tundra. These are manufacturer starting prices, not out-the-door quotes or equivalent-trim comparisons. Destination charges, equipment, taxes, dealer pricing, incentives, and local availability affect the final cost. Check Toyota’s Tacoma page and Tundra page for current build tools and local offers.
| Truck | Type | 2026 starting MSRP | Cab and grade overview |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tacoma | Midsize pickup | $32,545 (Toyota.com manufacturer starting MSRP) | XtraCab or Double Cab; grades include SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. |
| Tundra | Full-size pickup | $41,260 (Toyota.com manufacturer starting MSRP) | Grades include SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone; gas and hybrid availability varies by grade. |
Tacoma cab and bed combinations vary by configuration: XtraCab is a two-seat layout with rear storage, while Double Cab seats five. Toyota lists 5- and 6-foot beds depending on build. Confirm combinations on the current configurator. Tundra’s powertrain choices also vary by grade, so verify the specific build rather than assuming every version is available with every engine.
What is the difference between Tacoma and Tundra?
Tacoma is the smaller, lower-starting-price option; Tundra is Toyota’s full-size pickup. Tacoma may suit a buyer who wants a midsize footprint, an available two-seat cab, or the available manual transmission. Tundra is the more relevant starting point when the job requires a full-size truck or approaches its higher maximum towing rating. Neither truck’s maximum rating applies to every configuration.

Which powertrain and fuel economy should you compare?
2026 Tacoma engines
The Tacoma i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged engine is rated by Toyota at up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft. Toyota’s 2026 release gives the standard powertrain an EPA-estimated 26 mpg highway. The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft, with Toyota-reported EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 mpg combined. Toyota says the hybrid is standard on TRD Pro and Trailhunter and available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. Select i-FORCE models offer a six-speed intelligent manual; the hybrid pairs with an eight-speed automatic. See Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma release for its specifications and grade details.
2026 Tundra engines
Tundra’s i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 is rated at 389 hp and 479 lb-ft. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated at 437 net combined hp and 583 lb-ft. Both use a 10-speed automatic. Toyota’s current Tundra page lists EPA estimates by grade; for example, it shows 18/23 mpg city/highway for several gas grades, with distinct estimates for hybrid and TRD Pro versions. Compare the exact grade, drivetrain, and powertrain on the Tundra model page, rather than treating one figure as representative of all Tundras. These are manufacturer estimates; no independent real-world fuel-economy results are cited here. Toyota’s 2026 Tundra release provides engine details.

How much can a 2026 Tacoma tow?
Toyota lists a maximum towing capacity of up to 6,500 lb for Tacoma. That is a model-line maximum, not a promise for every cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, or equipment combination. Check the exact truck’s configuration data and owner information before choosing a trailer. Toyota’s towing information is a starting point, not a substitute for the specific vehicle’s rating.
Toyota identifies available Tacoma towing aids including a trailer brake controller, digital rearview mirror, Trailer Back Up Guide with Straight Path Assist, and wireless trailer camera. Availability depends on the build. Check the truck’s equipment and wiring, the trailer’s braking requirements, and accessory compatibility; a controller is not necessarily fitted to every Tacoma or required for every trailer.

How much can a 2026 Tundra tow?
Toyota lists a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 lb for Tundra, but the rating depends on the exact configuration. Toyota also lists up to 1,850 lb maximum payload for Tundra, likewise configuration-dependent. For either truck, payload is a separate limit: passengers and cargo consume it, as does trailer tongue weight. A trailer that falls below the truck’s tow rating can still exceed payload or another vehicle limit when loaded.
Before buying or towing, use the exact truck’s door-jamb labels, owner information, and configuration data. Compare ratings with the trailer’s loaded weight and account for occupants, cargo, and tongue weight. Tundra’s 2026 release says a 32.2-gallon fuel tank and a tow hitch with 7/4-pin connector are standard across grades, including SR; confirm the equipment on the selected vehicle. Toyota describes additional towing and parking technology as available, so check the chosen build.

How should you choose a 2026 Tacoma or Tundra?
- Set the size and use case. Decide whether a midsize Tacoma meets your daily needs or whether you need a full-size Tundra. If towing is central, start with the loaded trailer and verify a specific truck’s ratings rather than shopping by maximum headline capacity.
- Choose the cab and bed. Decide whether you need rear passenger seats. Tacoma’s XtraCab seats two and provides rear storage; Double Cab seats five. Then confirm that the bed length you want is offered with the target cab and trim.
- Match engine and transmission to the job. Compare the Tacoma’s gas and hybrid outputs and available manual against your driving and equipment needs. For Tundra, compare gas and hybrid versions and their grade availability; both are automatic.
- Pay for trim-specific equipment you will use. Tacoma TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter focus on off-road equipment; Limited and higher comfort-oriented grades emphasize different features. Match the trim to your actual driving rather than paying for equipment that does not serve it.
- Compare the exact fuel estimate and total quote. Use grade- and drivetrain-specific fuel figures. Get a written local quote and compare equivalent equipment, destination charges, taxes, financing, and incentives.
What changed for the 2026 model year?
Tacoma updates
Toyota’s announced Tacoma changes include Heritage Blue, Wave Maker exclusive to TRD Pro, selected front-logo and wheel/tire updates, and a tow hitch now standard on SR XtraCab. Off-road hardware is trim-specific: Trailhunter includes Old Man Emu shocks and 33-inch tires; TRD Pro uses TRD-tuned FOX shocks and 33-inch tires and has IsoDynamic Performance Front Seats. These details do not describe every Tacoma. See Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma release.
Tundra updates
Toyota’s announced 2026 Tundra updates include Wave Maker, exclusive to TRD Pro; a revised Capstone interior; optional ISO Dynamic seats on TRD Pro; certain package changes; and a standard 32.2-gallon tank and tow hitch with 7/4-pin connector across grades. Toyota says Tundra is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio. See the 2026 Tundra release for the announced changes.
