Toyota launched it in Japan on 9 January 1996 as a specialized 4WD for rescue, reconstruction, ambulance work, research and travel over rough terrain—not simply as a large recreational SUV. Its combination of full-time four-wheel drive, hub reduction and reverse-phase four-wheel steering helped make a 2,170 mm-wide vehicle unusually capable on obstacles and tight turns.
What was the Toyota Mega Cruiser?
Toyota’s vehicle history describes the Mega Cruiser as originally developed as a high-mobility infantry transport vehicle for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, then modified for civilian use and put on sale in January 1996. The civilian model was therefore military-inspired, but it was not simply an unchanged military vehicle offered to private buyers. Toyota’s vehicle-lineage record makes that distinction explicit.
At its 9 January 1996 launch, Toyota presented the Mega Cruiser as a 4WD for demanding work: natural-disaster rescue, reconstruction, research and exploration in harsh conditions. Its later historical description also names ambulance services and travel in undeveloped areas. Toyota said the vehicle was intended for the Japanese civilian market; examples were later imported elsewhere. The original launch announcement framed it around difficult operating conditions, particularly rough terrain and steep slopes.
Why was the Mega Cruiser so wide?
The Mega Cruiser’s 2,170 mm width was part of a package built around off-road clearance and stability, rather than a styling choice alone. Toyota’s representative-grade table lists a curb mass of 2,850 kg, a length of 5,090 mm, a height of 2,075 mm and a 3,395 mm wheelbase. Those figures describe the KC-BXD20V-RRPEW grade, not every version. Toyota’s accompanying historical prose gives slightly different rounded length, height and wheelbase figures—5,000 mm, 2,105 mm and 3,390 mm respectively—so the table values should not be treated as a universal specification. Toyota’s lineage record provides both sets.

Despite its size, Toyota listed a 5.6 m turning radius and reverse-phase four-wheel steering. In that system, the rear wheels turn opposite the fronts, helping the long, wide vehicle maneuver more tightly than a conventional two-wheel-steering layout would. Toyota’s launch release also specified full-time 4WD, a two-speed transfer case with center differential lock, Torsen limited-slip differentials, and locking differentials at the front and rear. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent comparative test.
How did its off-road hardware work?
Hub reduction and 420 mm of clearance
Toyota’s launch specification gives ground clearance as 420 mm. Hub reduction gears between the drive shafts and axles allowed the drive shafts to sit higher, helping preserve clearance beneath them. Toyota also credited the vehicle’s 37-inch tires with contributing to its ground clearance. The combination was intended to help the Mega Cruiser tackle obstacles and rough ground while retaining a four-wheel-drive layout.

Diesel power and the 1999 update
The representative-grade table lists a water-cooled 4,104 cc inline-four 15B-FT diesel producing 155 PS at 3,200 rpm. Toyota revised the engine for the 1999 update to the 15B-FTE, an intercooled direct-injection turbo-diesel rated at 170 PS at 3,000 rpm and 43.0 kg-m of torque at 1,600 rpm. Toyota reported both output figures as about 15% higher than before and said emissions of NOx and particulate matter were reduced to meet the latest regulations. Those revised figures apply to the updated model, not every Mega Cruiser. Toyota’s 24 May 1999 update announcement records the change.
What could it carry?
Toyota’s original 1996 launch release specifies six seats and a 600 kg load capacity. Later Toyota lineage material and Toyota GB’s retrospective give 750 kg instead. The available Toyota publications therefore do not support one unqualified payload figure for every model or publication context: the launch specification states 600 kg, while later materials state 750 kg. The 1996 release and Toyota GB’s 2020 retrospective show the discrepancy.

How long was it made, and how rare is it?
Toyota ended Mega Cruiser production in August 2001. Toyota GB reports that the last civilian example sold in 2002. The same 12 June 2020 retrospective estimates that “just over 100” civilian vehicles were made, but qualifies that figure with “we think”; Toyota’s global history material does not provide a confirmed production total. The estimate is useful context for the model’s rarity, not an exact count. Toyota GB’s retrospective also notes that overseas buyers imported examples.

Toyota’s 24 May 1999 announcement listed the updated six-seat model at manufacturer suggested prices, excluding consumption tax, of ¥9,800,000 in Tokyo, ¥9,795,000 in Nagoya and ¥9,800,000 in Osaka. These are historical Japanese prices from that announcement, not present-day valuations. Toyota’s 1999 release gives the regional amounts.
