Toyota’s Proace Lerina was a compact camper van launched in the UK in February 2018. It was small enough for ordinary parking spaces, yet offered a fold-flat double bed, a compact kitchen and—when specified with the optional pop-up roof—sleeping space for four.
The Lerina is no longer a new Toyota launch. Toyota’s archive places the model in the 2018–2020 period, but it remains an interesting example of how much camping equipment can be fitted into a medium-wheelbase van.

A Toyota camper built by Wellhouse and Lunar
Although Toyota announced and sold the Lerina through selected UK retailers, the conversion itself was not built in a Toyota vehicle factory. British camper specialist Wellhouse Leisure designed the interior, while its parent company, Lunar Campers, handled production and assembly.

The starting point was the medium-wheelbase Toyota Proace Comfort. At 4.95 metres long and 1.98 metres high, Toyota positioned it as a van that could still fit standard parking spaces and pass beneath most height barriers. That made it a more practical daily driver than a large motorhome, although the 1.98-metre height would still need checking carefully at car parks with low limits.

- Adjustable Design: featuring a two-piece design, this curtain is flexible and practical; When not in use, simply push the curtain aside and tie it up with the attached rope, saving you valuable time
- Quick and Easy Installation: just snap the metal hooks at a right angle, insert them into the gaps of your car's B-pillar or C-pillar, and pull the drawstring tight; The curtain will be securely fixed to your window, no slipping; Note: metal hooks need to be snapped by hand to fit into the car's pillar gaps
Two diesel powertrains
Buyers could choose between two versions of the Proace’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel:
| Version | Transmission | Original UK price |
|---|---|---|
| 120 bhp | Six-speed manual | £42,000 on the road |
| 180 bhp | Automatic | £44,250 on the road |
Those were the announced UK prices in 2018, not current used-market values or modern Toyota list prices. The stronger engine was paired with the automatic transmission, making it the more convenient choice for long-distance touring, while the 120-bhp manual was the cheaper entry point.
A compact interior with a fixed camping layout
The Lerina’s main living area revolved around a sliding rear bench mounted on floor rails. The bench could be repositioned to alter the balance between passenger room and living space, then folded down to create the main double bed.

The front seats swivelled towards the cabin, helping turn the front of the van into part of the lounge. Along the side was a small kitchen containing a sink and stove, supported by a fresh-water tank and a 25-litre refrigerator. A wardrobe and portable toilet were also included.
That last item is important: the Lerina was not a full motorhome with a separate bathroom. Its toilet was portable, and there was no built-in washroom or shower compartment.

- Waterproof and Durable: This insulation material has waterproof non-woven fabric layers on both sides, providing moisture-proof and absorbent properties. This property helps inhibit condensation and extends the material's lifespan in vehicle applications.
- Easy Installation and Versatile: The material is flexible and can be easily cut with a utility knife or scissors to fit complex shapes and curves such as wheel arches, door panels, walls, and ceilings; its lightweight nature simplifies the installation process for DIY van and RV conversion projects
Up to four berths—but only with the roof option
In its standard arrangement, the rear bench converted into a double bed. Toyota and Wellhouse also offered an optional double bed in the pop-up roof. With that option fitted, the Lerina could sleep up to four people.
The roof bed was not standard equipment, so not every Lerina should be assumed to have four berths. Buyers inspecting a used example would need to confirm that the pop-top and its bed are actually fitted.
The van could also be configured with two additional seats, giving it the ability to carry up to six people. This made the Lerina more flexible than a dedicated two-berth camper, although the camping furniture and fixtures were not fully removable. The extra seats expanded its people-moving ability; they did not turn it into a completely empty cargo van.
Electrical equipment and camping features
For off-grid use, the conversion included a leisure battery, a 100-watt solar panel and an external electrical hookup. A 2.2-kilowatt heater was listed among the equipment, which would be useful in the cooler conditions common to UK touring.
An exterior awning with LED lighting was available as an option. That would add sheltered outdoor space without requiring the interior to become much larger, but it also means buyers should check the specification rather than assume every Lerina has the same equipment.

Where was the Proace Lerina sold?
The original UK launch covered selected Toyota retailers in England, Wales and Scotland. Toyota also planned left-hand-drive versions for export to other European countries. It was not announced as a US-market vehicle, so the original dollar figures sometimes quoted for it were only 2018 exchange-rate conversions—not evidence of American availability or current pricing.
How the Lerina fits into Toyota’s camper range
The Lerina should be viewed as a historical model rather than Toyota’s current global camper van. Toyota now offers other Proace-based camper conversions in some European markets. Spain, for example, lists Proace Verso Camper and Proace City Verso MiniCamper versions in Outfun, Nomad, Nomad Plus and Nomad Plus Home trims.
Toyota Poland has also introduced the newer PROACE Verso Tanuki, developed with AE Conversions, and the larger PROACE MAX Tanuki, developed with Affinity RV. The latter is offered in 599- and 636-centimetre lengths and starts at 459,900 zł in Poland. These are separate, newer products—not updates to the 2018 Lerina.
What to check when viewing a used Lerina
- Confirm the conversion identity. Check that the van is a genuine Wellhouse/Lunar conversion rather than a standard Proace fitted with aftermarket camping equipment.
- Inspect the pop-up roof. Look for water ingress, damaged seals, trouble with the lifting mechanism and the presence of the optional roof bed.
- Test the conversion electrics. Check the leisure battery, solar charging system, hookup and interior lighting independently of the vehicle’s starter battery.
- Check the fixed furniture. Sliding rails, the folding rear bench, the stove, sink, refrigerator and wardrobe should all be operated before purchase.
- Verify the seating layout. If six-seat use matters, confirm that the additional seats are present, correctly mounted and recorded appropriately in the vehicle paperwork.
- Measure the height. The quoted 1.98-metre height is close to the limit at some barriers. Roof equipment, awnings or later modifications could affect clearance.

Who built the Toyota Proace Lerina conversion?
Wellhouse Leisure designed the camper interior, and Lunar Campers, Wellhouse’s parent company, handled production and assembly.
How many people can sleep in the Proace Lerina?
The rear bench made a double bed. With the optional pop-up-roof double bed, the maximum sleeping capacity was four.
Does the Proace Lerina have a bathroom?
No. It has a portable toilet, but no separate bathroom, shower or full motorhome washroom.
The Bottom Line
The Toyota Proace Lerina was a neatly packaged 2018 camper conversion rather than a full-size motorhome. Its 4.95-metre footprint, six-seat potential, side kitchen, heating and optional four-berth layout gave it genuine everyday versatility, while the portable toilet and fixed interior made its limitations clear. For used buyers, the conversion’s condition and exact specification matter as much as the Toyota badge.
