Tesla Cybercab announced: Elon Musk’s robotaxi is finally here

Tesla’s Cybercab has moved into pilot production, but it is not yet available to buy or book. Here’s how it differs from Tesla’s current Model Y Robotaxi service.

Tesla’s Cybercab is here as a vehicle program, not as a car you can order or a robotaxi you can currently book. Tesla unveiled the two-seat, steering-wheel-free autonomous taxi on October 10, 2024, but its live Robotaxi service launched with modified Model Y vehicles instead.

The latest meaningful update is production-related: Tesla’s Q1 2026 update listed Cybercab at Gigafactory Texas in pilot production and said volume production was expected during 2026. That is progress beyond the original concept reveal, but it is not the same as customer deliveries or broad public availability.

What Tesla actually unveiled

Tesla showed the Cybercab at its “We, Robot” event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, on October 10, 2024. The vehicle was presented as a purpose-built autonomous taxi rather than a conventional Tesla with its driver controls removed.

The displayed Cybercab had seating for two and no steering wheel or pedals. Tesla also showed the larger Robovan at the same event. The Cybercab’s compact cabin and dedicated taxi role distinguish it from Tesla’s existing Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, which can be sold to private owners and fitted with driver controls.

Tesla’s original plan called for production before 2027, commonly understood as a 2026 target. Elon Musk also said the vehicle would cost less than $30,000. However, Tesla did not publish a final retail price, order configurator, delivery timetable or complete production specification at the unveiling.

Is the Cybercab available to buy?

No. Tesla has not published a general consumer sales program for the Cybercab. Its current vehicle pages do not list a Cybercab purchase price or provide a way to place an order.

The often-repeated “under $30,000” figure is therefore a target, not a confirmed transaction price. It does not tell buyers whether that amount includes destination charges, taxes, software, fleet equipment or any future autonomous-service fees.

There is also an important practical distinction between a vehicle entering pilot production and a vehicle being ready for retail delivery:

Status What it means here
Unveiled Tesla displayed the vehicle publicly in October 2024.
Pilot production Tesla’s Q1 2026 update listed Cybercab at Gigafactory Texas in limited or trial production.
Volume production Tesla expected this to begin during 2026, according to the same update.
Customer availability No general Cybercab ordering or delivery program has been announced.

What Tesla’s Robotaxi service uses today

Tesla launched its Robotaxi ride-hailing service in June 2025, but the service initially used Model Y vehicles. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K says the Robotaxi business “currently operates with Model Y vehicles” and is expected to add Cybercab in time.

That means reports saying the Cybercab has already launched rides in Austin are misleading. The accurate description is that Tesla operates a Robotaxi service in Model Y vehicles, with Cybercab planned for a later phase.

Tesla’s current Robotaxi page lists autonomous rides in:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Miami, Florida
  • Austin, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Houston, Texas

Riders are directed to download Tesla’s Robotaxi app for iOS or Android. Service areas, eligibility and operating conditions can change, so the app and Tesla’s live service page are the useful checks before planning a trip.

“Driverless” does not yet describe the whole Tesla service

Tesla’s Cybercab concept is designed without a steering wheel or pedals, but the current Robotaxi fleet is different. Model Y vehicles retain conventional driver controls and initially operated with safety-monitor supervision.

Tesla’s Q4 2025 update said it began removing safety monitors from some Austin customer rides in January 2026 on a limited basis. That change should not be treated as proof that every Robotaxi trip is unsupervised, or that the steering-wheel-free Cybercab is already operating commercially.

For clarity, there are three separate claims:

  1. Tesla has shown a fully autonomous Cybercab design: yes.
  2. Tesla operates a Robotaxi service: yes, using Model Y vehicles.
  3. Cybercabs are broadly available for public rides or purchase: not according to Tesla’s current published information.

How the Cybercab is expected to charge

Tesla presented inductive charging as part of the Cybercab concept. In practical terms, the vehicle would charge wirelessly when positioned over compatible charging equipment instead of being connected with a conventional plug.

Tesla’s current Robotaxi page does not provide final Cybercab charging specifications, charging speeds or a confirmed production charging-network rollout. The concept’s wireless-charging presentation should therefore not be mistaken for a published specification sheet.

What pilot production tells us

Tesla’s Q1 2026 update is more significant than another staged prototype appearance because it identifies Cybercab activity at Gigafactory Texas as pilot production. Pilot production allows a manufacturer to test manufacturing processes, tooling, parts supply and quality control before attempting sustained high-volume output.

It does not establish how many vehicles were completed, whether they meet final production specifications, or when customers will receive them. Tesla said in April 2026 that Cybercab had entered production, but that announcement still needs to be read alongside the official production table, which described the Texas operation as pilot production. Reuters also reported that Tesla continued to target volume production during 2026.

The sensible reading is that Cybercab has moved beyond a static concept and into the manufacturing-development stage. The remaining milestones include volume production, regulatory and operational validation, fleet deployment and a clear public launch plan.

Tesla is preparing emergency-response information

Tesla now publishes first-responder documentation for an autonomous Cybercab, including a Cybercab First Responder Interaction Plan, Emergency Response Guide and Rescue Sheet.

Those documents matter because a vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals requires emergency responders to understand its systems, access points and shutdown procedures. Their existence indicates that Tesla is preparing operational material for the vehicle. It does not prove that Cybercabs have entered general commercial service.

What remains unknown

Tesla has not yet supplied several details prospective riders, fleet operators and investors would need:

  • The final purchase price or fleet-acquisition price
  • A consumer ordering process
  • A confirmed first-delivery date
  • Final range, battery and charging specifications
  • The exact autonomous hardware and software configuration
  • Which cities will receive Cybercab service first
  • Whether Cybercab rides will initially use remote supervision or other operational safeguards
  • Whether private ownership will be allowed, or whether the vehicle will be restricted to Tesla’s Robotaxi network

Until Tesla publishes those details, the Cybercab is best understood as a purpose-built autonomous taxi progressing toward planned production—not as a finished Tesla model sitting on sale lots.

Can I buy a Tesla Cybercab now?

No. Tesla has not published a general Cybercab ordering process, confirmed retail price or delivery program. The vehicle is in pilot production, with volume production expected during 2026.

Are Tesla Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs?

Not currently. Tesla’s Robotaxi service launched with Model Y vehicles. Tesla says the purpose-built Cybercab is intended to join the service in the future.

How much will the Cybercab cost?

Elon Musk said at the unveiling that it would cost less than $30,000, but Tesla has not confirmed a final price. The figure remains a target rather than a current listed price.

The Bottom Line

The Cybercab is no longer just a design-study reveal: Tesla lists it in pilot production at Gigafactory Texas and expects volume production during 2026. But “finally here” needs qualification. There is no general purchase program, no confirmed customer-delivery schedule and no public Cybercab ride service. Tesla’s current Robotaxi network uses Model Y vehicles, while the steering-wheel-free Cybercab remains on the path from pilot production to eventual fleet deployment.
