Toyota’s new Land Cruiser FJ is no longer just a concept or future product: sales began in Japan on May 14, 2026. The compact, five-seat SUV expands the Land Cruiser family with a shorter wheelbase, narrower body, ladder-frame construction, part-time four-wheel drive, and a starting Japanese price of ¥4,500,100 including consumption tax.
The FJ’s idea of “accessible” off-roading is primarily about size, visibility, maneuverability, and everyday usability—not necessarily a bargain price. Toyota has not confirmed U.S. sales, American specifications, EPA certification, or U.S. pricing, so the Japanese-market production vehicle should not be presented as an imminent replacement for the U.S.-market Land Cruiser 250.
A smaller Land Cruiser is now a production reality
Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ globally on October 20, 2025, positioning it as a more approachable entry point into the Land Cruiser family. The company originally said that a Japanese launch was planned for around mid-2026. That plan has now reached production: Toyota announced the Japanese-market FJ on May 14, 2026, and confirmed that sales had begun the same day.
The FJ joins the existing Land Cruiser 300, 70, and 250 series. Its role is different from simply being the “cheapest Land Cruiser.” Toyota’s confirmed Japanese price does not establish that claim globally, and no U.S. price has been announced. Instead, the FJ makes the Land Cruiser concept easier to approach physically. It is shorter and narrower than the 250, has a tighter turning radius, and is designed to be easier to place on both narrow trails and crowded urban streets.

That makes the FJ an important expansion of the Land Cruiser formula: the durability and off-road architecture remain, but the vehicle is packaged for owners who may not want—or need—the size of a 250 or 300.

This specification applies to the production vehicle and the Japanese-market VX grade listed in Toyota’s launch material. It should not be treated as a global trim or as a prediction of what a future export model would contain.
Why the FJ should be easier to maneuver
The FJ measures 350 mm less in length and 125 mm less in width than the Land Cruiser 250. Its 2,580-mm wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than the 250’s, helping Toyota achieve a claimed 5.5-meter minimum turning radius.
Those differences matter in two very different environments. In town, a shorter and narrower body should be easier to fit into parking spaces, tight lanes, and older streets. On trails, the shorter wheelbase can reduce the amount of room required to turn around obstacles or negotiate switchbacks. The benefit is not merely a smaller exterior silhouette; the FJ is intended to be easier for a driver to position accurately.

Toyota also lowered the beltline and cowl and used a horizontal dashboard to improve forward visibility. The company says these choices help drivers read the vehicle’s attitude over uneven terrain. That could make the FJ less intimidating to newcomers than a tall, wide SUV with poor sightlines, although independent driving impressions and instrumented testing are still needed before making claims about how it performs in real-world conditions.
It is compact, but it keeps a real off-road foundation
The FJ uses a ladder-frame platform derived from the IMV-series architecture. Toyota says the platform has been revised with additional underfloor bracing and greater lateral rigidity. This is a fundamentally different proposition from a small crossover that borrows rugged styling without a body-on-frame structure.
The production FJ’s confirmed off-road equipment includes:
- Part-time four-wheel drive
- An electric rear differential lock
- Downhill Assist Control
- Hill-start Assist Control
- A front skid plate
- Roof rails
- Side steps
- A rear-mounted spare tire
The suspension uses a high-mount double-wishbone arrangement at the front and a four-link rigid rear axle with lateral rods. That rear layout is consistent with Toyota’s emphasis on wheel movement and durability rather than crossover-like on-road packaging alone.

Toyota says the FJ’s ground clearance and approach-angle capability are comparable to the Land Cruiser 250. It also claims a departure angle 15 degrees better than the 250 and wheel articulation equivalent to the Land Cruiser 70 series. Those are Toyota’s engineering comparisons, not results from an independent test. The source material does not provide a named trail test, measured recovery performance, payload evaluation, lap time, or third-party comparison.
Another practical detail is the use of removable segmented corner bumpers. Toyota designed the corner sections so that damaged portions can be replaced individually rather than requiring an entire bumper assembly. The company also says the FJ underwent extensive off-road testing during development. That supports the conclusion that Toyota refined the vehicle in off-road conditions; it does not establish a specific level of trail superiority.
Storage is more useful than the compact footprint suggests
The FJ has a two-row, five-passenger interior and a 6:4 split-folding rear seat. Toyota reports 795 liters of luggage capacity with the rear seat in use and 1,607 liters with the rear seat folded. Those figures use Toyota’s stated VDA/internal measurement methodology, so direct comparisons with cargo numbers from other markets or manufacturers may not be perfectly equivalent.
The rear-mounted spare tire and upright body shape reinforce the FJ’s utility-focused design. It is not a three-row family SUV, but the available cargo volume gives it more flexibility than its compact exterior dimensions might suggest. Buyers who regularly carry passengers and bulky gear will still face the normal trade-off of a two-row vehicle: folding the rear seats increases capacity but eliminates the back-seat seating positions.

Toyota’s designers drew on the Land Cruiser 40 series while avoiding a literal reproduction. The FJ has a square cabin, chamfered edges, flared fenders, and a dice-inspired body theme. Production details include a C-shaped lighting signature, a Toyota wordmark, and the rear-mounted spare tire.
The visual goal is clear: make the FJ recognizable as a rugged Land Cruiser without making it as large or formal as the 300 series. The low beltline and upright proportions are functional design decisions as well as styling cues. They support visibility and make the body’s corners easier to understand from the driver’s seat.
Toyota is also treating customization as part of the ownership proposition rather than an afterthought. Japanese dealer-installed options include body decals, side and rear MOLLE panels, and ARB-supplied roof racks, skid plates, and rock rails. Toyota says ARB parts can be purchased as Toyota genuine accessories through selected dealerships, but availability is dependent on the market and individual dealer.
For owners planning recovery or camping storage, a Land Cruiser FJ MOLLE panel can provide a way to organize equipment on the side or rear door. Likewise, an ARB Land Cruiser FJ roof rack, skid plate, or rock rail may appeal to buyers who want Toyota-listed customization rather than an unverified universal accessory. Buyers should confirm exact fitment, load limits, installation requirements, and local availability before ordering; the Japanese accessory list does not guarantee that the same parts will be sold in another country.

“Accessible” does not mean inexpensive
Toyota’s Japanese MSRP is ¥4,500,100 including consumption tax and excluding recycling fees. That is the confirmed retail price for the listed Japanese-market VX grade. It should not be converted directly into a forecast U.S. price because an American model, if Toyota ever announces one, could have different safety equipment, emissions hardware, drivetrain calibration, trim content, tariffs, logistics costs, taxes, and dealer pricing.
The FJ also uses a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder producing 163 PS and 246 N·m. Toyota’s official WLTC rating is 8.7 km/L, a Japanese test-cycle result that should not be treated as an EPA estimate. The engine and fuel-economy figures underline that the FJ is not being positioned as a high-output performance SUV. Its appeal is more likely to center on packaging, low-speed control, off-road hardware, and the Land Cruiser nameplate.
In other words, “accessible off-roading” describes the vehicle’s dimensions and usability more confidently than it describes its final affordability in every market.
Japan availability, KINTO, and the unresolved U.S. question
Japan is the only confirmed retail market in the reviewed Toyota material. Toyota has not confirmed a U.S. launch date, U.S. MSRP, American dealer availability, U.S. powertrain, EPA certification, trim structure, safety-equipment configuration, or delivery schedule.

The release cites a starting payment of ¥38,390 per month under a specific seven-year plan with bonus payments and no additional options. That figure is not an unrestricted lease quote or a global ownership cost; the contract duration, bonus-payment structure, options, taxes, and other terms matter.
The U.S.-market 2026 Land Cruiser is relevant only as context. It is a separate 250-series vehicle and should not be confused with this new compact FJ. Until Toyota USA makes a specific announcement, reports claiming that the FJ is definitely coming to North America are speculation.
The new FJ is not a revived FJ Cruiser
The similar name will inevitably invite comparisons with the FJ Cruiser, but the two vehicles should not be treated as the same product. Toyota’s own development material distinguishes the new Land Cruiser FJ from the earlier FJ Cruiser.
The discontinued FJ Cruiser was developed with a North American-oriented concept and became known for its retro styling, distinctive visibility compromises, and strong enthusiast following. The new Land Cruiser FJ was developed around more globally diverse lifestyles and Toyota’s goal of making Land Cruiser ownership more approachable. Its inspiration from the 40 series does not make it a direct reboot of the FJ Cruiser.

Calling it the “new Land Cruiser FJ” is more accurate. An article may compare the two vehicles for readers, but describing the new SUV as an FJ Cruiser revival overstates what Toyota has confirmed.

Toyota also announced the Land Hopper, a compact electric personal-mobility vehicle intended to fit in the FJ’s luggage area. The proposed use is straightforward: carry the Land Hopper in the SUV, then use it to travel on trails or access areas beyond where the vehicle can go.
The Land Hopper is not a currently available FJ accessory. Toyota describes it as a future product or prototype planned from spring 2027 onward, subject to the stated future schedule. The announced design has two front wheels, compact folding dimensions, and seating for one person.
In Japan, Toyota says people aged 16 or older may operate it without a conventional driver’s license under the specified small motorized bicycle category. That regulatory description is Japan-specific and should not be generalized to other countries, where licensing, registration, helmet, road-use, and trail-access rules may differ.
The Land Hopper illustrates Toyota’s broader mobility thinking around the FJ: the SUV is not only intended to reach a trailhead, but potentially to serve as a base for smaller forms of transportation. Whether that becomes a meaningful ownership benefit will depend on the Land Hopper’s final production status, price, range, and local regulations.
What the FJ could change—and what remains unproven
The FJ’s strongest argument is packaging. A 5.5-meter turning radius, a body 350 mm shorter and 125 mm narrower than the 250, a shorter wheelbase, a low cowl, and a ladder frame give it a coherent reason to exist. It is not simply a smaller-looking Land Cruiser; Toyota has tied the dimensions directly to maneuverability and driver visibility.
Its hardware also gives the concept credibility. Part-time 4WD, a rear differential lock, a rigid rear axle, protective equipment, and Toyota’s claimed articulation and approach capability place the FJ closer to a serious off-road tool than to a lifestyle crossover wearing trail-themed accessories.
But several important questions remain unanswered outside Japan. There is no confirmed U.S. version to evaluate, no independent test record in the available research, and no evidence yet about long-term reliability, highway refinement, real-world fuel economy, payload, towing, or aftermarket support. Those questions should be answered only after the vehicle is independently tested in the relevant market.
