The Toyota Highlander has changed considerably since its 2001 debut. It began as a Camry-based, car-like alternative to truck SUVs, added an optional third row during its first generation, adopted larger three-row dimensions in 2008, and moved to Toyota’s TNGA-K platform for 2020. The biggest recent changes include the switch from a V6 to a turbocharged four-cylinder for 2023, standard all-wheel drive for 2026, and an announced all-electric fifth-generation model for 2027.
This guide covers U.S.-market Highlander model years. Toyota sells the vehicle as the Kluger in some markets, but equipment and model-year timing can differ.

2001–2003: the Camry-based original
The original Highlander arrived for 2001 as a unibody midsize SUV built on a platform shared with the Camry. Unlike truck-based SUVs of the period, it emphasized car-like ride comfort, easier road manners and family-friendly packaging.

Early models used a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, with a 3.0-liter V6 available as an upgrade. These early Highlanders did not all have three rows; the standard layout was more compact and generally focused on five-passenger use.
2004–2005: more power and an optional third row
Toyota made a substantial update for 2004. The V6 grew from 3.0 to 3.3 liters, and V6 models received a five-speed automatic transmission. Toyota also modified the body structure to accommodate an optional third row.
That means the 2004 update was more than a styling change. The revised front and rear appearance is the quickest way to distinguish most 2004–2007 gas models from 2001–2003 examples, but the mechanical and structural changes matter when comparing used vehicles.

Toyota revealed the Highlander Hybrid in 2005 and launched it for the 2006 model year. It was Toyota’s first hybrid-powered SUV and used a 3.3-liter V6-based Hybrid Synergy Drive system.
Front-wheel drive was standard, while Toyota’s electric four-wheel-drive system was available. Unlike a conventional mechanical four-wheel-drive system, the rear axle was powered by an electric motor.
2007: a model-year transition
The 2007 Highlander is generally classified as the final first-generation model in U.S. buying guides. Toyota introduced the second-generation vehicle during the 2007 calendar year, which can create confusion in listings and production dates. For model-year research, use 2001–2007 for the first generation and 2008–2013 for the second.
Second-generation Toyota Highlander: 2008–2013
2008: full redesign and increased space
The 2008 Highlander was larger, quieter and roomier than the original. The redesign made three-row seating a more central part of the model’s identity and improved the interior materials and overall refinement.

2009: a different four-cylinder engine
A 2.7-liter four-cylinder became available for 2009 on five-passenger, front-wheel-drive Highlander models. It used a six-speed automatic transmission.

Used-car shoppers should not confuse this engine with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder from the first generation. The displacement, application and transmission are different.
2010: more base-model equipment
For 2010, Toyota expanded convenience features on the Base grades. The four-cylinder Base model gained an available power moonroof. The Base V6 could be equipped with a backup camera whose image displayed through the multi-information display.

The gas lineup included Base, Sport and Limited grades, with two-wheel drive and full-time four-wheel-drive configurations depending on the model. This was still the same second-generation body and platform.
2011: major refresh
The 2011 Highlander received a significant midcycle update, including:
- Revised front fascia, hood and fenders
- Redesigned headlights, taillights and wheels
- Standard three-row seating and rear climate control
- Expanded four-cylinder availability
- A more powerful 3.5-liter V6-based Highlander Hybrid powertrain
The 2011 Hybrid was available only with Toyota’s all-wheel-drive-with-intelligence system. Gas models were sold in Base, SE and Limited grades, with two-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive depending on configuration.
2012–2013: late-generation models
The 2012 and 2013 Highlanders were carryover versions of the second generation. Trim equipment and packaging varied, but the basic body, platform and powertrain architecture remained unchanged. The next full redesign arrived for 2014.
Third-generation Toyota Highlander: 2014–2019
2014: a larger three-row redesign
Toyota unveiled the third-generation Highlander at the 2013 New York International Auto Show for the 2014 model year. It received a more substantial exterior, a more usable three-row interior and seating for up to eight.
This generation was designed more clearly around family use than the original Highlander. Buyers could choose configurations intended for either seven or eight occupants, depending on the second-row seating arrangement.
2015–2016: incremental updates
The 2015 and 2016 models were not new generations. Toyota changed trim availability, multimedia equipment, exterior packages and hybrid packaging, but both remained third-generation Highlanders.

2017: the important midcycle update
The 2017 Highlander received one of the most consequential updates of the generation. Gas V6 models moved to a new 3.5-liter direct-injection engine and a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission. Stop-and-start technology became available.

Toyota Safety Sense became standard, adding a more comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features. Toyota also introduced the sporty SE gas grade and expanded the Hybrid lineup to include LE and XLE grades.
The 2.7-liter four-cylinder remained available on the gas LE front-wheel-drive model. Hybrid versions remained all-wheel drive.
2018: continued lineup
The 2018 Highlander Hybrid continued in LE, XLE, Limited and Limited Platinum grades. It was a continuation of the refreshed third-generation vehicle rather than a redesign.
2019: final third-generation updates
Toyota added exterior upgrades across the lineup for 2019. Gas models were offered in LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE and Limited grades, while the Hybrid was available in LE, XLE and Limited forms. Toyota Safety Sense P remained standard.
Fourth-generation Toyota Highlander: 2020–2026
2020: TNGA-K redesign and new hybrid system
The fourth-generation Highlander debuted for 2020 on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform. It received a new exterior and interior, a longer body, standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The extra length was directed primarily toward cargo capacity rather than simply adding bulk to the passenger cabin. Seven- and eight-passenger configurations remained available depending on the second-row layout.
Gas models used a 3.5-liter V6, while the redesigned Hybrid introduced a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Toyota Hybrid System with two electric motors. Available Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD added rear-axle control and a driveline disconnect on applicable gas models.
The gas Highlander reached dealers in late 2019, while the 2020 Highlander Hybrid followed in February 2020. Early showroom availability does not make it a 2019 model; it remains a 2020 model-year vehicle.

2021: XSE and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+
Toyota added the XSE gas grade for 2021 between the XLE and Limited. It included sport-oriented exterior styling, a sport-tuned suspension and the 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 paired with the eight-speed automatic.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ became standard, and lower grades received LED headlamp enhancements.
2022: Hybrid Bronze Edition
The 2022 Highlander Hybrid Bronze Edition added a distinct appearance and several upgraded features:
- Bronze exterior accents and 18-inch bronze wheels
- Unique SofTex seating and illuminated bronze door sills
- Digital rearview mirror
- Rain-sensing wipers
- Hands-free power liftgate
- 1,500-watt power outlets
It was available with front-wheel drive or the Hybrid’s electric all-wheel-drive system. Wind Chill Pearl replaced Blizzard Pearl in the color lineup, and power height/tilt adjustment for the front passenger seat became standard on XLE and higher grades.
2023: the V6 is replaced by a turbocharged four-cylinder
The 2023 model brought the most important powertrain change of the fourth generation. Every U.S.-market gas Highlander switched from the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 to a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It continued with an eight-speed automatic transmission and was available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The 2.5-liter Hybrid powertrain continued. This is also the year Toyota introduced its Toyota Audio Multimedia system, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. Several grades received larger multimedia screens and instrument displays, and the wireless charging pad moved to the instrument-panel shelf.
Used-car warning: a U.S.-market 2023 gas Highlander does not have the V6. The V6 ended after the 2022 model year. A listing that describes a 2023 gas model as V6-powered should be verified against the vehicle identification number and window sticker.
2024: no generation change
The 2024 Highlander remained a fourth-generation vehicle. It retained the 2.4-liter turbocharged gas engine and 2.5-liter hybrid system. It was not a new body generation or a fifth-generation model.
2025: 25th Edition Hybrid
The Limited 25th Edition was based on the Hybrid Limited AWD and limited to 2,500 U.S. vehicles. It added unique 20-inch wheels and exterior trim, Portobello leather-trimmed upholstery, 25th Edition logos, a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 11-speaker JBL audio and a Panoramic View Monitor.

Toyota has announced an all-new, all-electric 2027 Highlander as the next generation of the nameplate. It is separate from the gasoline and hybrid fourth-generation Highlander, not simply a facelift.
Announced U.S. details include:
- Battery-electric powertrain
- Seating for up to seven
- XLE and Limited grades
- Available front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive
- Up to 338 combined system horsepower
- An available 95.8-kWh battery in AWD models
- Manufacturer-estimated range of up to 320 miles for XLE AWD and Limited AWD
- North American Charging Standard charging port
- Toyota Safety Sense 4.0
- Toyota Audio Multimedia
- Available vehicle-to-load capability
- Assembly in Georgetown, Kentucky
Toyota says U.S. sales are expected to begin in late 2026 and continue into early 2027. Availability may therefore be limited before the 2027 model becomes broadly established at dealerships.
Highlander generation changes that matter to used-car shoppers
- Need an optional third row? Check carefully before buying a first-generation Highlander. The third row was added during the 2004 update, not from the beginning.
- Want the V6? The 3.5-liter V6 continued through the 2022 gas model. The 2023 gas Highlander uses the 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.
- Want the newest hybrid system? The fourth-generation Hybrid introduced the newer 2.5-liter system for 2020; it was not simply the previous generation’s hybrid hardware carried forward.
- Shopping for AWD? AWD was configuration-dependent before 2026. It became standard across the U.S. lineup for 2026.
- Comparing a Grand Highlander? The Grand Highlander is a separate, larger model introduced for 2024. It is not the fifth generation of the regular Highlander.
How to identify a Highlander generation
| Model year range | Useful identification clues |
|---|---|
| 2001–2003 | Original smaller body; 2.4-liter four-cylinder or 3.0-liter V6 |
| 2004–2007 | Updated exterior; 3.3-liter V6; optional third row |
| 2008–2010 | Larger second-generation body; 2.7-liter four-cylinder added for 2009 |
| 2011–2013 | Second-generation facelift with revised front and rear styling |
| 2014–2016 | Third-generation larger three-row design |
| 2017–2019 | Refreshed third generation; 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 and eight-speed automatic on V6 gas models |
| 2020–2022 | TNGA-K fourth-generation body; V6 gas engine or 2.5-liter Hybrid |
| 2023–2026 | Same fourth-generation body; 2.4-liter turbo gas engine; updated multimedia |
| 2027 | Announced all-electric fifth-generation model |
For a specific used vehicle, model-year information is more reliable than a seller’s description. Confirm the VIN, engine, drivetrain, seating configuration and factory equipment because trim availability changed frequently within each generation.
FAQ
Did the Toyota Highlander start in 2000?
Toyota revealed the Highlander in 2000, but it was introduced as a 2001 model. The first U.S. generation covers the 2001–2007 model years.
Which Highlander years have a V6 engine?
The 3.5-liter V6 was used in gas Highlanders through the 2022 model year. For 2023, all U.S.-market gas Highlanders switched to a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Hybrid models use a separate 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain.
Is the 2026 Toyota Highlander the fifth generation?
No. The 2026 Highlander is still a fourth-generation gasoline/hybrid model. Its major change is standard all-wheel drive across the U.S. lineup. The announced fifth-generation Highlander is the all-electric 2027 model.
Is the Grand Highlander the fifth-generation Highlander?
No. The Grand Highlander is a separate, larger model line introduced for 2024. It is not a generation designation for the standard Toyota Highlander.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
The clean U.S. model-year breakdown is 2001–2007, 2008–2013, 2014–2019, 2020–2026 and 2027 onward. The changes most likely to affect a purchase decision are the optional third row added for 2004, the newer Hybrid system introduced for 2020, the V6-to-turbo-four switch for 2023, and standard AWD for 2026. Toyota’s announced 2027 Highlander marks a much larger break: it is an all-electric fifth-generation model rather than another update to the current gas and hybrid vehicle.
