The Ram 1500 has used several names and overlapping model lines, which makes its generation timeline less straightforward than it first appears. The truck began as the Dodge Ram for 1981, became the Dodge Ram 1500 in 1994, and moved to the Ram brand for 2010.
The other major complication is the 2019 model year. Ram introduced an all-new fifth-generation 1500, but continued selling the previous truck as the Ram 1500 Classic. That means a 2019 Ram 1500 can belong to either the fourth or fifth generation, depending on whether it is a Classic or the redesigned truck.

Ram 1500 generations at a glance
| Generation | Model years | Common designation | Important notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First generation | 1981–1993 | Dodge Ram D/W-series replacement | The Ram name first appeared on Dodge pickups. |
| Second generation | 1994–2001 | BR/BE Ram | Recognized for its rounded “big-rig” styling. |
| Third generation | 2002–2008 | DR/DH/D1 | Introduced independent front suspension on 1500 4×4 models and the Hemi V8. |
| Fourth generation | 2009–2024 as Classic | DS Ram 1500 | The fourth-generation truck launched for 2009 and continued beside the newer model as the Ram 1500 Classic. |
| Fifth generation | 2019–present | DT Ram 1500 | All-new aluminum-intensive body, revised frame, and updated powertrains. |
For a used-truck search, the most important distinction is not simply the year. A 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is a fourth-generation truck, while a 2019 Ram 1500 with the new body is a fifth-generation truck.
First-generation Ram: 1981–1993
The first Ram-badged pickup arrived for the 1981 model year as Dodge replaced its long-running D-series trucks. It was sold as the Dodge Ram 50 in some contexts, but the full-size lineup used Ram 150, Ram 250, and Ram 350 designations. The 150 was the half-ton model that eventually became the Ram 1500.

These trucks used conventional body-on-frame construction, solid rear axles, and traditional leaf-spring suspension. Buyers could choose regular-cab, extended-cab, and club-cab configurations, with two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions available.
Power came from Chrysler engines including slant-six and V8 options. A major update arrived for 1984, when the Ram received revised exterior styling and a more modern interior. Dodge also offered unusual variants during this period, including the turbocharged Shelby Dakota based on the Dakota rather than the full-size Ram.
In 1989, fuel-injected engines began replacing older carbureted setups. The first-generation truck remained on sale through the 1993 model year.

Second-generation Ram: 1994–2001
Dodge completely redesigned the Ram for 1994. The new truck’s rounded hood, tall grille, large fenders, and semi-truck-inspired appearance made it one of the most recognizable pickups of the 1990s. This is the generation many people picture when they hear “Dodge Ram.”
The 1500 used a coil-spring front suspension and was available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Regular-cab, Club Cab, and later Quad Cab configurations expanded its appeal beyond basic work-truck duty.
Engine choices included the 3.9-liter Magnum V6, 5.2-liter and 5.9-liter Magnum V8s, and a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel in heavier-duty models. The 5.9-liter V8 was available in the half-ton Ram 1500, although engine availability depended on cab, drivetrain, and model year.

Dodge introduced the four-door Quad Cab during this generation. The first Quad Cab models used smaller rear-hinged rear doors, while later versions offered a more practical crew-cab arrangement. A 1998 redesign brought updated exterior styling and interior changes.
Second-generation model years
1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.
Third-generation Ram: 2002–2008
The third-generation Ram arrived for 2002 with a larger body, a taller grille, a redesigned cabin, and a new frame. The styling retained the previous generation’s bold proportions but added more passenger room and a more substantial appearance.
The 1500 received several important mechanical changes. Four-wheel-drive 1500 models used an independent front suspension rather than the solid front axle found on earlier half-ton Rams. This improved ride comfort and steering response, although some off-road and heavy-use buyers preferred the durability and simplicity of the older solid axle.

The 5.7-liter Hemi quickly became the signature engine in the third-generation half-ton truck, replacing the older Magnum V8s in many applications. The 4.7-liter V8 remained available, and the 3.7-liter V6 became the base engine in later years.
The Mega Cab, introduced for 2006, provided an exceptionally large rear passenger compartment and additional interior storage. Although the Mega Cab was particularly associated with heavy-duty Rams, the configuration is an important part of this generation’s history.

Fourth-generation Ram: 2009–2018 as the main model
Ram introduced the fourth-generation 1500 for 2009. The redesign used a fully boxed frame, revised suspension geometry, a more aerodynamic body, and a quieter, more refined cabin. The truck was still sold under the Dodge name at launch, but Ram became a separate truck brand for the 2010 model year.

The 2009 model year began with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and 4.7-liter V8. The 3.7-liter V6 was available in lower trims. A major suspension change arrived with the available four-corner air suspension, which could lower the truck for easier loading or raise it for additional ground clearance.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor 2013, Ram gave the 1500 a substantial update. The changes included a revised exterior, a redesigned interior with the Uconnect touchscreen system, improved aerodynamics, and the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. The V6 was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission in many configurations, while the Hemi later gained broader access to the eight-speed.
The 2014 model year brought the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 to the half-ton lineup. It offered substantially better fuel economy than the gasoline engines, though diesel emissions equipment and maintenance made it a more complicated choice for some owners.
Ram added the off-road-oriented Rebel for 2015. The Rebel used unique styling, all-terrain tires, revised suspension tuning, skid plates, and other equipment intended for recreational off-road use. It was not the same type of heavy-duty off-road model as a Power Wagon, but it gave the 1500 a more specialized trail-focused trim.
The fourth-generation body continued after the fifth-generation truck arrived. Ram marketed it as the Ram 1500 Classic, primarily as a lower-priced alternative and fleet-oriented model.

Fifth-generation Ram: 2019–present
The fifth-generation Ram 1500 debuted for 2019 while the previous truck continued as the Classic. The new model used a redesigned frame, more high-strength steel, and aluminum for selected body panels including the hood and tailgate. It also moved away from the previous truck’s traditional rear suspension layout by using coil springs at the rear on standard 1500 models.
The available 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 used eTorque mild-hybrid assistance in many configurations. The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 remained the main upgrade engine, and the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel returned as an option. Depending on configuration, the truck offered either an eight-speed automatic transmission or the ZF-derived eight-speed used across much of the lineup.
Ram emphasized cabin comfort and technology with this generation. Available features included a large vertically oriented Uconnect touchscreen, a 12-inch display on higher trims, a reconfigurable center console, active noise cancellation, and expanded driver-assistance equipment.
The fifth-generation lineup also broadened the truck’s specialty trims. The Rebel continued as an off-road model, the Longhorn and Limited targeted luxury buyers, and the TRX arrived for 2021 with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, long-travel suspension, and serious high-speed desert capability. The TRX was discontinued after the 2024 model year.
For 2025, Ram refreshed the 1500 with revised styling, updated infotainment, and a new range of Hurricane twin-turbocharged inline-six engines. The available 3.0-liter Hurricane replaced the Hemi V8 in the regular 2025 lineup, while the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 remained available in selected configurations. Engine availability, trim offerings, and the return of V8 power can vary by later model year, so buyers should verify the window sticker or build sheet for a specific truck.
Fifth-generation model years
2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The generation continues into later model years, while the 2019–2024 Classic is a separate continuation of the fourth-generation design.

Frequently confused Ram 1500 model years
| Model year | What can cause confusion | How to sort it out |
|---|---|---|
| 1994 | First year of the rounded second-generation design. | Do not classify it with the boxy 1981–1993 trucks. |
| 2002 | First year of the third-generation body. | Look for the larger redesigned cab and updated chassis. |
| 2009 | First year of the fourth-generation truck. | It is still commonly called a Dodge Ram, even though the Ram brand split followed for 2010. |
| 2010 | Same basic fourth-generation design, but Ram became a standalone truck brand. | Branding and badging may say Ram rather than Dodge. |
| 2013 | Major facelift and interior technology update. | It remains fourth generation, not a new generation. |
| 2019 | Two different half-ton trucks were sold. | Check whether the truck is labeled Ram 1500 Classic or has the all-new fifth-generation body. |
| 2025 | Major powertrain and technology changes. | It is a fifth-generation refresh, not a sixth generation. |
Are Dodge Ram and Ram 1500 the same truck?
They are part of the same lineage, but the badge changed. Dodge used the Ram name on its full-size pickups beginning in 1981. The 1500 designation became standard with the second-generation truck in 1994. Ram then became a separate brand beginning around the 2010 model year.

What about the Ram 1500 REV and Ramcharger?
The Ram 1500 REV is an electric pickup derived from the fifth-generation Ram 1500 family, but it should not be counted as a separate gas-powered 1500 generation. Electrified versions, concept vehicles, and range-extended models belong in separate powertrain discussions rather than in the conventional generation timeline.
FAQ
How many generations of Ram 1500 are there?
There are five Ram 1500 generations if the original 1981 truck is included: 1981–1993, 1994–2001, 2002–2008, 2009–2018, and 2019–present. The previous generation continued as the Ram 1500 Classic through the 2024 model year.
What years are the fourth-generation Ram 1500?
The fourth-generation Ram 1500 covers 2009–2018 as the primary model. Its body continued as the Ram 1500 Classic for 2019–2024.
Is a 2019 Ram 1500 a fourth- or fifth-generation truck?
It can be either. A 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is fourth generation, while the redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 is fifth generation. The body style and badging are the quickest ways to tell them apart.
What is the best Ram 1500 generation to buy used?
That depends on priorities. The 2013–2018 fourth-generation trucks offer a mature design and widespread parts availability, while 2019-and-newer fifth-generation trucks provide a quieter cabin, newer technology, and more modern chassis hardware. Inspect maintenance history, air-suspension operation, diesel emissions equipment, and the specific engine before choosing.
The Bottom Line
The Ram 1500 timeline runs from the first Dodge Ram in 1981 through five generations today. The key dates are 1994 for the rounded second generation, 2002 for the third, 2009 for the fourth, and 2019 for the fifth. Treat 2019 carefully: the redesigned fifth-generation truck and the older fourth-generation Ram 1500 Classic were sold at the same time.
