The ninth-generation Hilux BEV rollout began in Europe in December 2025, Toyota UK opened orders on 1 June 2026, and UK deliveries started from mid-June 2026. Toyota has not announced a production battery-electric Tacoma or a launch date.
What Toyota confirmed about the electric Hilux
Toyota Motor Corporation announced the first battery-electric Hilux as part of the ninth-generation model launch on 10 November 2025. The company described a global, multi-pathway strategy that includes battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), hybrids and conventional engines rather than a single powertrain for every market.

The announcement covered a Hilux BEV prototype for Thailand and said Asian launches would proceed sequentially from 2026. Japan-bound models were scheduled for mid-2026. Toyota Europe separately said its all-new Hilux rollout would commence with the BEV from December 2025.

Those dates describe specific regional plans. They should not be treated as a single worldwide release date, and they do not establish U.S. availability.

Electric Hilux range, battery and work figures
Toyota has published different figures for different markets and test contexts. The Thailand vehicle is identified as a prototype with a claimed driving range, while Toyota Europe’s numbers were explicitly tentative and pre-homologation.

The more-than-300-km Thailand claim and approximately 240-km European WLTP figure are not contradictory measurements of one identical vehicle. They come from different markets and contexts, and the European figures had not yet completed final homologation when Toyota published them. WLTP is a standardized test-cycle result; a prototype cruising-range claim is not interchangeable with it.
Toyota’s global release attributes the Thailand range to improved eAxle efficiency. The published figures do not establish final charging time, energy consumption, ground clearance, wheel-and-tire combinations or every available drivetrain configuration.

UK price and ordering information
Toyota UK listed the Hilux BEV from £57,845 on the road. Orders opened on 1 June 2026, with customer deliveries from mid-June 2026. Toyota UK also said the vehicle qualifies for a £5,000 plug-in van grant.
The grant is a UK incentive, not a universal reduction in the truck’s price. Eligibility and value depend on the jurisdiction and can change, so buyers elsewhere need local confirmation. Toyota has not supplied a single global price for the Hilux BEV.
Has Toyota announced an electric Tacoma?
No. Toyota’s U.S. announcement for the 2026 Tacoma lists the standard i-FORCE gasoline engine and the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Toyota’s U.S. electrified-vehicle listing also identifies Tacoma as an i-FORCE MAX hybrid rather than a BEV. Neither source gives a production battery-electric Tacoma, a reservation program or a launch date.

What the Tacoma H2-Overlander actually is
The Tacoma H2-Overlander shown at SEMA 2025 is a concept and special-project prototype, not a retail electric Tacoma announcement. Toyota described it as combining hydrogen fuel-cell and battery-electric technology for off-road use.

- Second-generation Toyota Mirai fuel-cell stack.
- Three hydrogen tanks with a combined 6-kg capacity.
- 24.9-kWh lithium-ion battery.
- 225-kW front motor.
- 188-kW eAxle.
- 15-kW export capability through two NEMA 14-50 outlets.
The concept demonstrates packaging, power export and off-road electrification research. Toyota did not say it would become a production Tacoma, did not publish a retail specification and did not provide a customer launch schedule. Hydrogen refueling infrastructure and the concept’s specialized hardware also cannot be assumed for a future showroom model.
Hilux BEV versus a possible Tacoma BEV
There is only one confirmed production path today: the Hilux BEV. A Tacoma comparison must therefore separate published facts from assumptions.

Powertrain status
The Hilux BEV has a confirmed market rollout in selected regions. The Tacoma remains gasoline- or hybrid-powered in the 2026 U.S. range. The H2-Overlander is a hydrogen-electric concept, not a battery-electric production model.
Range and test method
Use the European Hilux figure—approximately 240 km WLTP—as the relevant published European benchmark. Keep it separate from the Thailand prototype’s more-than-300-km claimed cruising range. No comparable official BEV range exists for a Tacoma because Toyota has not announced one.

Payload and towing
Toyota Europe’s tentative Hilux figures are approximately 715 kg of payload and 1,600 kg of towing capacity. Those numbers are pre-homologation and do not define a Tacoma BEV. For work buyers, final payload, trailer ratings, axle limits, charging access and usable range under load will matter as much as the zero-emission powertrain.

Off-road use
A truck’s usefulness depends on more than its motor output. Buyers should check the final Hilux BEV’s drive configuration, payload after accessories, towing limits, approach and departure geometry, underbody protection and energy use on slow, high-load trails. Toyota has not published a complete production specification in the information available here, so those details should not be inferred from the Thailand prototype or the H2-Overlander.

- A Toyota USA announcement naming a production Tacoma BEV or its model year.
- An official U.S. specification sheet with battery, range, payload and towing ratings.
- A confirmed North American plant, ordering date or dealer allocation.
- EPA range and charging information rather than prototype or concept claims.
- Clear confirmation that any incentives apply to the exact truck and buyer’s jurisdiction.
Toyota’s stated multi-pathway strategy makes both BEV and FCEV development possible, but it does not turn one regional truck launch into a commitment for every Toyota pickup. Until Toyota publishes Tacoma-specific production information, the 2026 U.S. Tacoma lineup remains the gasoline and i-FORCE MAX hybrid range.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The electric Hilux is a confirmed production vehicle already rolling out in Europe and arriving with UK deliveries in June 2026. Toyota has not confirmed an electric Tacoma; the H2-Overlander is only a hydrogen-electric SEMA concept, while the 2026 U.S. Tacoma remains gasoline or hybrid.
