The figures behind the “302-hp” and “746-mile” headline belong to a different version: the plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which Toyota announced for sale in Japan on December 19, 2023. Toyota lists its maximum system output as 225 kW (306 PS), about 302 mechanical horsepower, and estimates total cruising range at 1,200 km or more—about 746 miles.
What Toyota debuted—and when
Toyota unveiled the Crown Sport HEV in Japan on October 6, 2023, and began accepting orders that day, with initial sales planned around November. It described the SUV as emphasizing dynamic styling, agility, and sporty driving, while announcing that a plug-in hybrid would follow around December. Toyota’s October 2023 announcement establishes the HEV debut, not the later PHEV’s power and range figures.
Toyota announced the Crown Sport PHEV for sale in Japan on December 19, 2023. It uses a 2.5-liter series-parallel plug-in hybrid system and is based on the Sport Z HEV grade, with PHEV-specific equipment. The two announcements describe separate powertrain versions, so the headline specifications should not be attributed to the October HEV debut.
What the 302-hp figure means
Toyota gives the PHEV a maximum system output of 225 kW (306 PS). The headline’s approximately 302 hp is a rounded conversion from metric horsepower (PS) to mechanical horsepower. Toyota says system output is provided by the engine and lithium-ion battery and is calculated by Toyota; it is not a separate figure for the HEV. Toyota’s PHEV announcement is the source for the stated output.

How Toyota arrives at the 746-mile range
The 746-mile headline is a conversion of Toyota’s estimated total cruising range of 1,200 km or more for the Japan-market PHEV. Toyota explains the estimate with three figures: a 90 km battery-powered range on a full charge, 20.3 km/L hybrid-mode fuel economy, and a 55 L gasoline tank. Its example arithmetic is 90 km + (20.3 km/L × 55 L) = 1,206 km.

Toyota says the EV-distance and fuel-economy figures are evaluated under Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism WLTC test conditions. The total-range figure is an estimate calculated from those values, not a separate test result. It is not an EPA rating or a promise that a driver will cover that distance on a trip.

What the range estimate does—and does not—tell you
The PHEV can use battery power for the stated WLTC distance when fully charged, but Toyota notes that the engine may disable BEV driving in certain engine or battery conditions, when the air conditioner is in use, or when driving exceeds the prescribed speed. Actual results also vary with weather, traffic, and driving behavior, as Toyota cautions on its Japan Crown Sport model page.
These are manufacturer figures for the Japan-market vehicle and the cited test basis. Toyota’s October and December 2023 announcements establish Japanese launch information; they do not establish current retail availability or pricing in an unspecified country.
