Toyota’s global Crown lineage has 16 numbered generations, launched from 1955 through 2022. Those generation numbers are not the same as U.S. model years: Toyota’s current U.S. newsroom lists Crown coverage for model years 2023 through 2027, while Toyota’s global gallery places several newer body styles within generation 16.
Toyota Crown generations by launch year
Toyota Motor Corporation’s global Crown gallery numbers 16 generations. The years below are the gallery’s generation launch-year labels, not complete production ranges for every market or body style.
| Generation | Launch year | Generation | Launch year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1955 | 9 | 1991 |
| 2 | 1962 | 10 | 1995 |
| 3 | 1967 | 11 | 1999 |
| 4 | 1971 | 12 | 2003 |
| 5 | 1974 | 13 | 2008 |
| 6 | 1979 | 14 | 2012 |
| 7 | 1983 | 15 | 2018 |
| 8 | 1987 | 16 | 2022 |
Toyota’s global Crown gallery identifies the 2022 Crown Crossover as generation 16. It also lists Crown Sport and Crown Sedan entries in 2023 and Crown Estate in 2025 as forms of that same generation. These are body-style entries, not generations 17, 18, or 19.
What the generation years do—and do not—mean
A generation launch year marks Toyota’s global numbered lineage. A model year is a sales-year designation used in a particular market. A model-year list therefore cannot be substituted for a generation list, and the same generation can encompass vehicles introduced in different years and body styles.

Toyota’s available history does not establish one worldwide production end year for every generation. Treat the table as launch years, rather than assuming each Crown generation ended when the next one launched. Market-specific sales years can differ.
A discrepancy in the eleventh-generation date
Toyota’s newer gallery labels generation 11 as 1999. A Toyota historical timeline published in 2015 instead gives August 2001 for its launch. Because the official sources conflict, the table follows the current gallery’s year label; an exact launch date for a particular market or model requires a more specific record.

Toyota Crown U.S. history and model years
The Toyopet Crown debuted in Japan in 1955 and reached the United States in 1958. Toyota’s U.S. company history records 288 Toyota vehicle sales in 1958: 287 Toyopet Crown sedans and one Land Cruiser. Toyota says the last Crown was sold in the U.S. in 1972 and that the nameplate returned for the 2023 model year. Toyota’s 2022 announcement of the 2023 Crown describes the return; its U.S. company history gives the 1958 sales figures.
At the research timestamp of October 4, 2026, Toyota USA’s newsroom category listed Crown pages for U.S. model years 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027. That is a snapshot of newsroom coverage, not a complete global model-year record or a generation count. Toyota USA Crown newsroom pages

Crown body styles in generation 16
The latest global generation includes more than one body style, and regional names and sales calendars are not necessarily interchangeable.
| Gallery entry | Year shown | How to understand it |
|---|---|---|
| Crown Crossover | 2022 | Generation 16’s launch entry |
| Crown Sport | 2023 | Another generation 16 body-style entry |
| Crown Sedan | 2023 | Another generation 16 body-style entry |
| Crown Estate | 2025 | Another generation 16 body-style entry |
Toyota announced the Crown Signia as a 2025 model and the second entry in the U.S. Crown lineup, describing it as the Crown nameplate’s first entry into the crossover SUV category. Name the U.S. Crown Signia separately when discussing American model-year availability; globally, Toyota’s gallery uses “Crown Estate” for its 2025 generation 16 entry.
