Toyota unveiled it in Japan on September 6, 2023, under the concept “The Chauffeur.” Calling it a Rolls-Royce Cullinan rival is an editorial comparison, not a claim Toyota makes in its launch material.
What the Century SUV is—and why Toyota built it
The Century name dates to 1967. Toyota describes it as a premium chauffeur-driven car, and the SUV was developed for changing passenger needs: occupants might want to rest or hold online meetings while travelling. The Century sedan continues as a separate model; the SUV does not replace it.
Toyota’s concept for the SUV is “The Chauffeur.” Its design prioritizes rear-passenger comfort and access, while Toyota also says it can accommodate owner-drivers. The launch announcement said orders would be accepted in Japan from September 6, 2023, with launch planned for later that year.
Why the Cullinan comparison needs a qualification
The Century SUV and Rolls-Royce Cullinan can be placed in the same broad conversation about high-end SUVs with chauffeur-oriented positioning. But Toyota’s announcement does not name the Cullinan, claim direct competition, or make a value or luxury ranking. Without separately sourced, same-market and same-model-year Cullinan specifications and pricing, claims that one is cheaper, better value, or equivalent in luxury are not established.

The comparison is most useful as a prompt to examine purpose: Toyota presents the Century as a Japanese chauffeur-first flagship, with a four-seat cabin and features focused on rear passengers. A full head-to-head would also need to account for local availability and service support, customization, equipment, and subjective factors such as materials, ride quality, and brand positioning.
Toyota’s published specifications
Toyota’s September 2023 global launch release lists these Century SUV specifications. The figures describe the SUV, not the separate Century sedan.

Toyota identifies the powertrain as a series-parallel plug-in hybrid using a 2GR-FXS 3.5-liter V6, an electric continuously variable transmission, and E-Four Advanced all-wheel drive. Toyota says the system is intended to operate as a battery electric vehicle for everyday driving and as a hybrid electric vehicle on longer journeys.
Rear-seat features and passenger comfort
Toyota’s launch material describes equipment and functions aimed at making rear-seat travel and entry easier. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent ride-test findings.

Japanese pricing and published efficiency figures
Prices differ by publication date. Toyota’s September 2023 global launch release gave a Japanese manufacturer’s suggested retail price of ¥25,000,000, including consumption tax but excluding recycling fees and options; it noted separate pricing for Okinawa. Toyota Japan’s currently indexed grade page lists ¥27,000,000 including tax. These are Japan-market list prices from different dates, not a single timeless price or a direct comparison with the Cullinan.
The current Toyota Japan grade page also lists 14.2 km/L WLTC fuel economy and a 69 km EV driving range. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not observed real-world results. Toyota cautions that actual fuel consumption varies with use conditions; options and associated costs may be separate.

Availability and what the official material establishes
The cited Toyota pages describe the vehicle and its Japan-market price; they do not establish worldwide availability or confirmed export plans. Toyota’s global launch release says Century Meisters are available at selected Toyota dealerships, but that does not by itself confirm overseas retail access. Buyers outside Japan should verify local availability, import requirements, servicing, and warranty coverage with relevant Toyota representatives rather than assume the SUV is sold in their market.
