The clearest generation-era warning is narrower: Toyota service material identifies certain 2AZ-engine Camrys from 2007–2009 and certain Camry Hybrids from 2007–2011 in an oil-consumption warranty enhancement. That is a reason to check a specific car’s engine, records and condition—not to assume every Camry from those years is affected.
Can Camry generations be ranked reliably?
Not as a statistically fair best-to-worst list. The available sources measure different things: government complaints and recalls, subscriber reports of vehicle trouble, and dependability-study results. They do not provide one comparable score adjusted for factors such as a generation’s time on the road, number of vehicles sold, mileage, powertrain, maintenance or owner reporting behavior. A generation-wide order would imply more certainty than these sources support.
For used-car shopping, the more useful ordering is by what deserves attention first: verify whether a candidate falls within the documented 2AZ oil-consumption applications, then weigh the exact car’s condition and history. The evidence does not establish that other Camry generations are more reliable than those models, or rank them against one another.
Which Camrys warrant a closer oil-consumption check?
Toyota’s 2015 service reference guide for Warranty Enhancement Program ZE7 discusses excessive engine oil consumption in certain 2AZ-engine vehicles. It lists certain 2007–2009 Camrys and certain 2007–2011 Camry Hybrids among the applicable model-year and vehicle combinations. Eligibility depended on the program’s terms; the guide is not evidence that every car in those years was affected or that a warranty benefit remains available today. | Vehicle group named in Toyota’s guide | What a buyer should establish |
|---|---|
| Certain 2007–2009 Camrys with a 2AZ engine | Confirm the exact engine and vehicle configuration; request oil-consumption or related repair records and have the engine assessed. |
| Certain 2007–2011 Camry Hybrids with a 2AZ engine | Confirm the exact hybrid and engine configuration; request relevant service paperwork and have the engine assessed. |
The word “certain” matters: model year alone does not establish applicability. Ask the seller for maintenance and repair documentation, check the oil level, and have an independent mechanic inspect the car. Do not treat the warranty enhancement as proof of a current coverage right.
What the other reliability signals can—and cannot—tell you
| Source | What it reports | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA complaints and recalls | Records searchable by model year, make and model. NHTSA says complaint information is considered with other information to identify safety issues and evaluate recall scope and adequacy. | Use complaints and recalls as screening information, not as confirmed failures or a denominator-based reliability rate. A recall count does not establish whether a specific vehicle’s remedy is complete. |
| NHTSA Toyota vehicle-characterization document | Reports significant complaint-rate increases around the introduction of the MY2002–2006 and MY2007–2009 Camry periods in an analysis of alleged unintended-acceleration patterns. | This is not a general reliability ranking and does not establish that every Camry in those periods had a defect. |
| Consumer Reports’ 2007 Camry reliability page | Its stated methodology uses the latest subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots; those figures describe the survey overall, not Camry-only responses. | Read model-year reliability history as survey-based owner reporting, not a census or controlled test of every used Camry. |
| Consumer Reports’ 2008 Camry reliability page | Includes recall listings and owner comments. The cited material does not establish owner comments as verified failure rates. | Use the page as one model-year reference; verify any recall against the candidate vehicle’s VIN. |
| J.D. Power’s 2025 Camry page | Quality & Reliability is 80/100, labeled Average. J.D. Power says current model-year ratings carry prior-year ratings until updated survey data is available. | This is a dated model-page rating, not a direct comparison of every historical generation. |
| J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study release | The study is based on 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership, and includes the Camry among model-level award recipients. | The stated sample is for the study, not Camry owners alone; the release does not give a score-based ranking of all Camry generations. |
These signals answer different questions. Complaint records describe reports, survey pages reflect participating owners’ accounts, and a dependability study reflects its defined sample and period. None supplies a controlled, exposure-adjusted comparison across every Camry generation.

How to evaluate an individual used Camry
- Identify the exact car. Confirm its model year, engine, hybrid status and VIN from the vehicle and its paperwork. Do not infer engine or program applicability from the generation label alone.
- Check for the documented oil-consumption application. If it may be one of the 2AZ vehicles described above, ask for relevant service and repair records, check the oil level, and arrange an independent engine assessment.
- Review maintenance and repair history. Compare the available records with the car’s mileage and condition. A broad reputation cannot substitute for evidence about the specific vehicle.
- Look up safety campaigns by VIN. NHTSA’s recall and complaint tools support model-year, make and model searches; use a VIN lookup to check the particular vehicle’s recall status and confirm whether listed work was completed. NHTSA datasets and tools.
- Make the decision from the inspected car. Consider the inspection findings, service records, mileage, accident and ownership history, and completed repairs together. Do not use a generation label or complaint total as a substitute for that assessment.
What a responsible ranking can say
The evidence supports flagging certain 2007–2009 2AZ-engine Camrys and certain 2007–2011 2AZ-engine Camry Hybrids for a more deliberate oil-consumption and records check. It does not support a reliable best-to-worst ordering of all Camry generations. For a buyer, the strongest comparison is between the actual candidates: their configurations, documentation, inspection results and VIN-specific campaign status.
