Mazda has not confirmed a new RX-7 or a production sports car above the Miata. The latest reported comments from Mazda Europe say the company is considering whether a car alongside or above the MX-5 could be feasible, but executives have not announced a model, price, or launch date. The Iconic SP concept has been described as a possible RX-7 successor; that does not mean its production has been approved.
Is Mazda making a new RX-7?
Not as a confirmed production model. In an interview reported by Auto Express on February 8, 2026, Mazda Europe product-planning supervisor Moritz Oswald said a sports car next to or above the MX-5 was possible if Mazda could find a feasible way to build it. Road & Track summarized the same interview on February 9; those reports are not separate confirmations.
Oswald said, “Could there be something next to it or above? Yes.” He also made clear that Mazda must bring in revenue. His comments describe interest and consideration, not approval of a production program. The interview supplied no launch timetable, price, or final name.
Will Mazda build a sports car above the Miata?
It remains an open possibility, not a commitment. Oswald described the MX-5 as Mazda’s current halo car and said a larger sports car could sit alongside or above it. Mazda chief technical officer Ryuichi Umeshita separately described the Iconic SP as larger than the Miata and not its replacement in a June 2025 MotorTrend interview.

The MX-5 already has a global audience: Mazda sold 27,669 MX-5s worldwide in 2024, according to figures reported by MotorTrend. That number describes sales of the existing roadster; it does not establish demand, profitability, or a business case for a larger sports car.
What is the Mazda Iconic SP?
The Iconic SP is a concept Mazda revealed at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, not a confirmed production car. Mazda CTO Ryuichi Umeshita told MotorTrend in 2025 that it could be “a good successor for RX-7.” That statement suggests a possible place in Mazda’s sports-car lineage, but Mazda has not confirmed a production vehicle named RX-7 or settled the concept’s production timing.

The concept’s rotary engine was presented as a range extender for an electric drive, rather than as the direct source of wheel power. A 2023 report described concept targets of approximately 365 horsepower and a curb weight below 3,200 pounds. Those were targets for the concept, not specifications for a production car.

Whether the business case works
Mazda Europe deputy general manager of R&D Christian Schultze described the affordability challenge in the February 2026 interview: a credible sports car could be made at $100,000, he said, but building one for ordinary buyers is much harder. That was an illustration of the challenge, not a proposed price for a Mazda model. Executives have not stated an expected price, production volume, or evidence of a viable business case.

How the rotary powertrain would work
The Iconic SP concept uses its rotary engine to generate electricity for electric propulsion. Schultze also discussed the possibility of a more parallel arrangement in which rotary power could be sent more directly to the wheels. That was a possibility, not a finalized engineering specification. A production design would have to reconcile performance, emissions feasibility, and affordability; Mazda has not announced which configuration, if any, it would use.
