The lawsuit alleging engine problems in certain Scion FR-S, Toyota 86/GR86 and Subaru BRZ models ended in January 2025 without a court ruling on whether the alleged defect exists. Laura Young filed the proposed class action in New Jersey on July 1, 2024. The court did not find the engines defective, and the case’s dismissal did not establish warranty coverage or compensation for owners.
What the lawsuit alleged
In Young v. Subaru Corporation et al., Laura Young sued Subaru Corporation, Subaru of America, Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor North America in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The complaint alleged that certain boxer engines used in the cars could suffer lubrication problems, including low oil pressure or oil starvation, leading to engine damage. The stated years and engine sizes describe the plaintiff’s proposed scope. They do not show that every listed model year or engine has the alleged problem.
What happened to the case?
In January 2025, the parties filed a joint stipulation of voluntary dismissal. The dismissal was with prejudice as to Young individually and without prejudice as to putative class members. The court terminated the case, and pending motions were dismissed as moot. Dismissal and case status

In practical terms, Young’s individual case ended, but the dismissal did not resolve the alleged defect on its merits. It was not a finding that the engines were defective, nor does the available case information establish a settlement or relief for owners. - The complaint is not proof of a general defect. It sets out the plaintiff’s allegations; the court made no merits finding in this case.
- Proposed class years do not establish coverage. A vehicle falling within the alleged model-year range does not, by itself, mean its owner is part of a certified class or eligible for a repair or payment.
- One reported failure cannot establish a failure rate. No reliable denominator-based statistic establishing how often these engines fail was identified in the sources reviewed.
- An individual vehicle’s diagnosis and records matter. If you have a concern, document symptoms, service history and any diagnostic findings, then discuss the specific vehicle with a qualified repair professional or the manufacturer. The lawsuit itself does not determine an individual warranty claim.
For a specific car, distinguish its generation and model year, engine size, and actual symptoms from the broader proposed lawsuit scope. A complaint about a vehicle category is not a substitute for diagnosing an individual engine.
