Toyota France and French cargo-bike maker Douze Cycles partnered to develop an electric front-loading cargo bike for household trips and local professional deliveries. Toyota named the bike Cargo Verso in September 2023 and described repair-oriented construction and recyclable materials as part of its sustainability approach. The announcements do not establish a measured carbon reduction or confirm the model’s current availability.
What Toyota and Douze Cycles announced
Toyota France announced its partnership with Douze Cycles on 8 July 2022, positioning cargo bikes as a complement to cars and electric vans for local transport and last-mile deliveries. The French company said the bikes would be distributed through Toyota’s French network starting in 2023. Toyota France’s partnership announcement described Douze as a specialist that designs and assembles bikes and accessories in Burgundy.
On 17 January 2023, Toyota presented the product under the name “DOUZE Cycles x La mobilité Toyota,” describing it as an electric two-wheel front-loader for private and professional users. The company then said sales would begin in September 2023 through 300 Toyota France dealerships. That was a launch plan announced at the time, not confirmation of present-day stock. In a 28 September 2023 announcement, Toyota named the bike Cargo Verso and called it the first cargo bike commercialized in its network. The January presentation and September Cargo Verso announcement document those stages.
What kind of cargo bike is the Cargo Verso?
Toyota describes the Cargo Verso as an electric biporteur: the cargo area is positioned in front of the rider. The announced uses include carrying children or shopping for households and making nearby deliveries for businesses. A front-loading layout can suit users who want the load in view, but the releases do not provide independent handling tests or comparisons with other cargo-bike designs.

Toyota Europe’s commercial-vehicle material gives a platform length of 850 mm and says professional loads can reach up to 100 kg on the platform, or use a specified cargo box with 300 litres of capacity. These are Toyota-published specifications, not independently verified test results. The figures describe different measures—platform length, maximum load and box volume—so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Toyota Europe’s Cargo Verso information does not, in the cited material, establish which accessories are compatible or how the load limit varies by configuration.
What Toyota says about repairability and sustainability
Toyota’s January 2023 description says the bike has a molded aluminum frame without welds, an integrated platform and replaceable parts. It also says the frame is compatible with different motor options, allowing a motor change without replacing the whole bike. The September announcement describes the Cargo Verso as made from 17 independent, interchangeable parts, and refers to disassembly and sorting at end of life.

Toyota further says the aluminum frame draws predominantly on the French recycling stream, with material choices informed by supplier expertise and proximity; it also cites recycled or lower-impact polymers. These are manufacturer descriptions of design and sourcing. Toyota’s cited releases do not provide an independently measured life-cycle assessment, quantified emissions savings, or durability test results. The partnership’s “more sustainable” framing is therefore a design intention and company claim, not proof of a specific environmental benefit over a car, van, or competing cargo bike.

The 2023 announcement of a 300-dealership distribution plan does not establish current availability, pricing, service coverage, or parts supply. The cited material also does not verify a current motor configuration, accessory compatibility list, or independent comparison with other electric cargo bikes. Before choosing a cargo bike for a particular trip or business, confirm these details with Toyota France or a current dealer, especially the loaded configuration and service arrangements.

- Confirm the allowed load for the exact platform or box configuration you intend to use.
- Ask which motor and accessories are offered, and whether replacement parts and servicing are available locally.
- Compare the front-loading layout and published capacity with other models based on your real cargo, route and storage needs.
