The Hakone name returned for the 2025 model year on the 2025 Toyota GR86 Hakone Special Edition, announced for the U.S. market on July 12, 2024. Toyota said it would produce 860 units for the U.S. The special edition brings distinctive Ridge Green styling and added performance hardware, but it is a GR86 trim—not a more powerful version of the car.
What does the Hakone Edition comeback mean?
Toyota’s phrase “A blast from the past is returning for the 2025 model year” referred to the return of the Hakone special-edition name. The previous U.S. Hakone was a model-year 2020 Toyota 86; the new one is a model-year 2025 GR86. They are related sports cars from different model years, not the same edition carried forward.
Toyota announced the 2025 edition on July 12, 2024, with expected U.S. dealer arrival in fall 2024. That launch window is historical, not a statement of present inventory. Toyota’s 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone announcement covers the earlier car, while its 2025 GR86 Hakone announcement describes the comeback edition.
How many 2025 GR86 Hakone Editions were made?
Toyota announced a production quantity of 860 units for the U.S. market for model year 2025. That is Toyota’s announced allocation, not confirmation of how many cars were ultimately sold or remain available. The 2024 announcement does not establish current dealer stock or used-car availability.

What makes the 2025 Hakone different?
Distinctive exterior details
The U.S.-market edition is based on the GR86 Premium grade. Its signature finish is Ridge Green paint, paired with 18-inch satin bronze-finished wheels. Toyota also identifies a color-keyed duck-tail spoiler, black accents and Hakone badging as edition-specific styling details.
Hakone cabin trim and accessories
Inside, the sport seats have Ultrasuede inserts with tan leather trim and stitching. Edition details include a Hakone shift knob and a GR special-edition plaque. Toyota’s 2025 brochure also lists Hakone-specific floor mats, a trunk mat, puddle lights, a key glove and an owner’s folio as equipment. The brochure describes them as included items; it does not establish that they are separately sold replacements or fit other model years and markets.

Brakes and dampers
The Hakone comes standard with Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers. Toyota’s 2025 brochure lists those items as optional on other GR86 grades, making them a meaningful equipment distinction beyond the paint and trim.
Engine, transmissions and Toyota’s performance figures
The 2025 U.S. Hakone uses the GR86’s naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. Toyota rates it at 228 hp at 7,000 rpm and 184 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,700 rpm. The same engine output is listed for other 2025 GR86 grades, so the Hakone package does not add horsepower.

| Feature | 2025 GR86 Hakone Special Edition | Other 2025 GR86 grades |
|---|---|---|
| Engine output | 228 hp at 7,000 rpm; 184 lb.-ft. at 3,700 rpm | Same output, according to Toyota’s 2025 brochure |

| Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers | Standard | Optional, according to Toyota’s 2025 brochure |
The specifications and equipment in this comparison come from Toyota’s 2025 GR86 eBrochure. It is the performance hardware and exclusive presentation—not a different engine tune—that set the Hakone apart.

Is the Hakone Edition coming back for 2026?
Toyota’s August 6, 2026 announcement describes updates to the GR86 in Japan, including revised throttle control and electric power steering and a triple-camera EyeSight arrangement. It says Japanese dealer orders begin August 28, 2026; it does not announce a 2026 Hakone edition or establish U.S. availability. Those Japan-market details should not be assumed to apply to U.S. cars. See Toyota Motor Corporation’s Japan-market GR86 update.
What to check if you are shopping now
The 2024 U.S. announcement cannot tell you whether a Hakone is currently for sale or what it costs. Check current dealer inventory and listings for the exact model year and edition, and verify the VIN, equipment and market specification before treating a car as a 2025 U.S. Hakone. Present stock, transaction prices, used values and dealer markups are not established by Toyota’s launch announcement.
