They describe related but different parts of an engine or motor’s output. In customary U.S. units, horsepower equals torque in pound-feet multiplied by engine speed in RPM, then divided by 5,252. That is why torque and horsepower figures cannot be compared meaningfully without their RPM—and why neither peak number alone predicts how a vehicle will accelerate, tow, or feel on the road.
What is the difference between torque and horsepower?
Torque measures twisting force
Torque is a twisting effect around an axis. In a vehicle, the engine or motor produces torque at its shaft; the transmission and final drive then change the relationship between shaft speed and torque delivered to the wheels. The engine’s torque figure is therefore not the same as wheel torque. Mitsubishi Motors Canada describes torque as a twisting force that causes rotation.
Horsepower measures how quickly work is done
Horsepower is a unit of mechanical power: the rate at which work is performed. It combines torque with rotational speed, so a torque figure alone does not tell you the power at which an engine is operating. Car and Driver explains the relationship between torque, RPM, and horsepower.
Think of the figures as two views of output, not rival substances. Torque describes the twisting force at a particular operating point; horsepower accounts for how quickly that force is being applied.

How do you calculate horsepower from torque?
When torque is in pound-feet and engine speed is in revolutions per minute, use:
Horsepower = torque (lb-ft) × RPM ÷ 5,252
The 5,252 constant applies to this customary-unit equation. Do not plug torque in newton-metres into it unchanged; use consistent units or the SI relationship between power, torque, and angular velocity. The formula is given by Mitsubishi Motors Canada and Car and Driver.
For example, 300 lb-ft at 3,000 RPM works out to about 171 horsepower at that operating point: 300 × 3,000 ÷ 5,252. This is a calculation from the formula, not a specification for a particular engine.

RPM explains why two engines making the same torque can have different horsepower: the one making it at higher RPM produces more power at that point. The figures are still distinct quantities. The often-seen 5,252-RPM crossing on a graph applies when torque is plotted in lb-ft and horsepower on the same scale; it does not mean the two measurements become interchangeable.

Why do peak torque and peak horsepower need context?
A published peak is one point in an engine’s operating range. Peak torque and peak horsepower may occur at different RPMs. The torque curve shows how torque changes with RPM, while horsepower reflects both torque and RPM. To understand an engine’s character, look at the curves—or at least note the RPM for each peak—instead of comparing bare peak values. Engineering Explained’s discussion of horsepower and torque provides additional context on output across engine speed.
Specifications also need a common basis. Check the market, model year, units, rating method, and whether the figure is measured at the engine or wheels. Haynes describes a U.S. historical convention in which vehicles generally used gross ratings through 1971 and net ratings from 1972 onward; this is a U.S.-specific historical note, not a global rule or a complete account of rating standards. See Haynes Manuals’ explanation of horsepower and rating methods.

Which matters more: torque or horsepower?
Neither one wins for every task. The useful question is how the complete vehicle delivers output for the driving you intend to do.
For acceleration
Torque contributes to the force available at the wheels, but engine peak torque is not a direct measure of acceleration. Gearing can multiply torque while changing wheel speed, and results also depend on vehicle mass, tire grip, transmission behavior, and the power available through the acceleration run. Compare vehicles using their output across the usable speed range and their gearing, not a single advertised peak.
For towing, hauling, or climbing
Torque is relevant because these tasks call for force at the wheels under load. But engine torque by itself does not establish how much a vehicle can tow, haul, or climb: gearing and the vehicle’s full capability matter. Toyota Canada identifies higher torque as suited to hard work such as towing, hauling, and climbing grades in its 2021 torque explainer.

For high-speed driving
Power and the power available across engine speeds help describe a vehicle’s performance, but horsepower alone does not set top speed. Gearing, aerodynamic drag, tires, and other constraints also matter.
For everyday drivability
A broad usable torque and power range, together with transmission calibration, can matter more to how responsive a vehicle is in ordinary driving than a single peak figure. The effect varies by vehicle, so specifications and curves are more informative than assuming one peak tells the whole story.

The relationship between torque, rotational speed, and mechanical power applies to electric motors as well as combustion engines. But torque–speed behavior varies by motor type and design, so one EV’s output curve should not be assumed to represent every EV. Natural Resources Canada’s Electric Motors: Energy Efficiency Reference Guide uses a car starter as an example of a motor designed for high torque at low power. Renault Group also explains electric-motor power in terms of rotational speed and torque in its electric-car motor explainer.

The square knurled handle is made of aluminum titanium alloy, which is ergonomic and comfortable to hold for long-time use.
- DUAL SCALE AND QUICK SETTING: Laser Printed by dual-range(ft-lb and Nm). Our professional torque wrench is easy to read and provides direct unit conversion, When the set torque value is reached, the torque wrench will make an audible and felt click to remind you to stop applying force. Pull down the lock knob and hold it until the torque setting is completed. Release the hand, and the lock knob will automatically rebound back to lock the value.
- ERGONOMIC DESIGN AND POWERFUL: Every design of our industrial torque wrench conforms to ergonomic, easy to handle.72-tooth ratchet, 5° ratcheting arc head, a quick-release button for easy loading and unloading, and an aluminum non-slip handle for excellent grip and control. A recent research review that, 72-tooth ratchets are very professional tooth ratchets, you just only rotate 5 degrees to finish it. Not easy to slip and wear, can be used in small spaces, and is more durable and powerful.
- EASY OPERATION AND SAFETY: Thanks to its bidirectional drive ratchet head, our torque wrench can be measured both clockwise and counterclockwise. When the set torque value is reached, a "click" sound will remind you to stop applying force to prevent damage to the item due to excessive torque. Notice: At low Nm settings under 5 Nm the "click" sound can be too light to hear.
“Instant torque” alone does not predict an EV’s acceleration. Actual delivery depends on the motor, controls, gearing, traction, vehicle mass, and the output available at different speeds.
How to compare two vehicle specifications
Use these checks before deciding which vehicle better fits your needs:
- Read the full figures: note torque and horsepower along with the RPM at which each peak occurs.
- Compare the curves: look for how output is delivered across the operating range, not just the highest point.
- Identify the measurement point: establish whether output is quoted at the engine or wheels, where stated, and account for transmission and final-drive gearing.
- Match the rating basis: compare like units and specifications from the same market and model year, with the rating method identified.
- Start with the job: acceleration, towing, passing, and sustained high-speed travel place different demands on the vehicle.
- Consider the whole vehicle: mass, tire traction, and transmission behavior affect how engine or motor output reaches the road.
Without named vehicles and comparable specifications, there is no sound basis for ranking one model above another. The figures are most useful when read as part of the whole powertrain and vehicle.
