Torque is a rotational turning effect; horsepower measures how quickly work is done, combining torque with rotational speed. In U.S. customary units, horsepower ≈ torque in pound-feet (lb-ft) × engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM) ÷ 5,252. The two figures are related, but neither peak number alone tells you how a vehicle will perform: the usable RPM range, gearing, vehicle mass, and intended use all matter.

What is torque?

Torque describes a twisting or turning effect. In a vehicle, it is commonly reported in pound-feet (lb-ft) in the United States or newton-metres (N·m) in many other markets. An engine or motor produces torque at its rotating shaft; the drivetrain then uses gearing to deliver turning force to the wheels.

A torque figure needs its RPM context. An engine might make its stated peak torque only within a particular part of its operating range, so the peak alone does not show how much torque is available during ordinary driving. Mitsubishi explains the relationship between torque and horsepower in its overview of torque versus horsepower.

What is horsepower?

Horsepower is a unit of power: it describes how quickly work is done. For a rotating engine or motor, power depends on both the torque being produced and how fast the shaft is turning. A torque figure describes turning effect; a horsepower figure expresses that turning effect at a given rotational speed.

EPAuto 1/2-inch Drive Click Torque Wrench, 10-150 ft/lb, 13.6-203.5 N/m
  • Durable Ratchet Head: Made from Hardened treated Chrome Vanadium steel alloy (Cr-V) Corrosion-Retardant: Satin Finish. Made in Taiwan
  • Easy Storage: A sturdy plastic storage case is included. Non-Slip Grip: Knurled handle
  • Easy to Read: High Contrast & Dual Range Scale. Accurate: Pre-Calibrated to ± 4%
  • Accessories included: 1/2" Drive 5" long Extension Bar
  • Simple and Reliable: “Click” sound tells the preset torque value is reached. Stop applying force when you hear and feel it.

For torque measured in lb-ft and speed measured in RPM, the customary calculation is:

Horsepower ≈ torque (lb-ft) × RPM ÷ 5,252

The constant 5,252 converts those specific units. Do not use this version of the equation with torque in N·m or power in kilowatts without converting units first. Power may be listed as horsepower, metric horsepower (PS), or kilowatts (kW), so check the unit before comparing vehicle specifications. Ford Australia summarizes engine power measurement units and rating terminology in its guide to engine power measurements.

How are torque and horsepower different?

They describe different aspects of output, even though they are mathematically connected. Torque is the turning effect at a particular speed; horsepower is the rate of work represented by that torque at that speed. As RPM changes, the relationship changes too. A high torque peak does not automatically mean high power throughout the rev range, and a horsepower peak does not reveal how much output is available at every engine speed.

That is why specifications should include the speed at which peak torque and peak power occur, when those details are available. A broad useful range can matter more in normal driving than a single peak reached briefly. Subaru also explains horsepower in the context of car performance in its horsepower overview.

How to compare torque and horsepower when choosing a vehicle

Use the figures as starting points, not a stand-alone verdict. When comparing vehicles, check:

  • Output across the RPM range: Look for torque and power curves, or at least the RPM at which each peak occurs. This helps show whether the output is concentrated at one speed or available across a wider operating range.
  • Gearing and traction: Gear ratios affect how engine or motor output reaches the wheels, while available grip affects how effectively that force can be used.
  • Vehicle mass: The same output can produce different results in vehicles of different weights.
  • Intended use: Stop-start driving, towing, and sustained highway operation place different demands on a powertrain. Consider the conditions you care about rather than assuming that one headline number predicts all of them.
  • Units and rating basis: Confirm whether figures use lb-ft or N·m and horsepower, PS, or kW. Also check whether ratings are stated on a comparable basis; not every published engine rating follows the same procedure.

SAE J2723 describes procedures for certifying production-engine net power and torque ratings under SAE J1349, or gross engine power under SAE J1995. That limited scope does not establish that every manufacturer’s published figure uses the same procedure. See the standard’s certification description when rating methodology is relevant.

Do electric cars have torque and horsepower?

Yes. Electric motors produce mechanical power through torque and rotational speed, just as the relationship requires. Their torque-speed curves can differ from those of combustion engines and from one motor type to another, so a motor’s peak torque figure should not be treated as a complete description of its output at every speed. Natural Resources Canada discusses electric motor operation in its electric motors efficiency reference guide; Renault Group also explains power output in an electric car motor.
