For August, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence reported 1.83 million global EV sales, up 2% year over year, but the available figures do not establish an August global model ranking or market-share percentage.
What does the 27% global EV share mean?
CleanTechnica’s July 2026 report, published August 29, put BEVs at 19% of the market and BEVs plus PHEVs together at 27%. The 27% figure is therefore a combined plug-in share, not a BEV-only share, and it is for July rather than August. CleanTechnica’s July global report
The distinction matters: a plug-in hybrid can travel on electric power but also has an internal-combustion engine, while a BEV is powered solely by its battery and electric motor. The two categories should not be treated as interchangeable when comparing market share.
How many electric vehicles sold worldwide in August 2026?
Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimated 1.83 million global BEV and PHEV sales in August 2026, a 2% increase from August 2025. Its January–August total was 13.4 million, up 4% year over year. The regional totals Reuters reported are rounded; their sum is about 1.84 million, slightly above the rounded global total of 1.83 million. That difference is a rounding effect, not a reason to treat the regional figures as an exact reconciliation.

Benchmark Data Manager Charles Lester attributed the subdued global growth to North America’s contraction offsetting growth elsewhere. He said the North American year-over-year comparison reflected the buying rush in the United States before the federal credit expired at the end of September 2025. This is Benchmark’s interpretation of the comparison, not a separate measure of the credit’s effect.
Which electric vehicles were the world’s top sellers?
The latest global model ranking identified in the available reporting is for July 2026. The Tesla Model Y led, followed by the BYD Song and Geely Xingyuan. EV Sales index The figures available here do not establish August unit counts or an August worldwide order for these models. July leaders should not be presented as August leaders, and regional August sales results would not be a substitute for a global model ranking.

August’s 1.83 million sales and 2% year-over-year increase establish volume and growth; they do not provide the market-wide denominator needed to calculate a share. The 27% figure belongs to July and counts BEVs and PHEVs together. The latest global model ranking identified here is also for July, so an August worldwide model-by-model list cannot be inferred from it.
