A fully synchronized six-speed manual is standard on the WRX, Premium, Limited, and TR trims. The important exception is the WRX GT, which uses Subaru’s Performance Transmission and is not a manual car.
Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard, so buyers do not have to select an expensive drivetrain package to obtain traction on all four wheels. The WRX also provides four doors, seating for five, and a more conventional sedan layout than the GR Corolla. Those traits make it the broadest-use vehicle in this group.
Why choose the WRX?
- It is the most approachable option. The WRX sits in a much more mainstream price and ownership category than the Porsche.
- It combines performance with sedan utility. Rear-seat access and a separate trunk are useful for commuting, passengers, and year-round duties.

Which WRX trim should you consider?
The WRX Premium and Limited generally make the most sense for buyers balancing equipment and cost, while the TR is aimed more directly at performance-focused drivers. The base WRX is the entry point. The GT may have attractive equipment, but it should be removed from a manual-car search because its Performance Transmission is automatic.

2. 2024 Toyota GR Corolla: the best focused AWD manual hatchback
The 2024 Toyota GR Corolla is the more specialized enthusiast choice. It is smaller and more aggressive than the WRX, uses a five-door hatchback body, and pairs a high-output engine with an unusually configurable AWD system.
Toyota’s 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder produces 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. For 2024, the U.S. GR Corolla lineup used a six-speed intelligent Manual Transmission with rev matching and Toyota’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system. The 2024 model was manual-only; do not automatically apply that statement to later model years.
GR-FOUR gives the Corolla a distinct personality
The GR-FOUR system allows selectable front/rear torque distributions of 60:40, 30:70, and 50:50. Core versus higher-performance equipment
Not every 2024 GR Corolla has the same differential hardware. The Core uses open differentials. The Performance Package and higher grades add front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials. - It has the highest output of the two compact cars. Its 300 hp and 273 lb-ft exceed the WRX’s figures.

- The 2024 lineup is manual-only. There is no automatic-versus-manual trim decision within the 2024 U.S. range.
Best GR Corolla use case: an enthusiast who wants a compact, highly focused car but still needs five doors and some everyday practicality.
3. 2024 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS: the high-end AWD manual choice
The 2024 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS is the outlier on this list. It offers the rare combination of a rear-engine sports-car platform, all-wheel drive, a powerful twin-turbo flat-six, and a driver-operated seven-speed manual transmission.
The pre-hybrid 2024 GTS configuration produces 473 hp. Porsche identified the Carrera 4 GTS as an all-wheel-drive variant and made the seven-speed manual available for GTS models as an alternative to the PDK dual-clutch transmission. For this article’s strict criteria, the Carrera 4 GTS is the relevant configuration—not every 911 derivative.
This is not a direct value or practicality rival to the WRX and GR Corolla. Porsche’s GTS family was introduced with a Carrera 4 GTS coupe price of $144,000, and market references placed the car substantially above the mass-market choices even before options. Exact pricing depends on body style, equipment, options, destination charges, and market timing.

Why several familiar manual cars do not qualify
Many performance-car lists become inaccurate by mixing model years, markets, and transmission types. These are the most important exclusions for a strict 2024 U.S. search:

Winter traction: AWD is not a substitute for tires
