AirPlay-compatible smart TVs may work with Apple AirPlay generally, but the F1 TV developer says other receiver combinations are not guaranteed. If you are using a smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, or another receiver, try its native F1 TV or Apple TV app before treating the problem as a Wi-Fi fault.
The remaining causes usually fall into six groups: devices on different or isolated networks, outdated software, VPN or security filtering, a broken app session, subscription or regional access, or an F1-side service problem.

Quick compatibility check
| Setup | What to do |
|---|---|
| iPhone/iPad to Apple TV box | Try this first; it is the clearest F1 TV AirPlay path. |
| iPhone/iPad to AirPlay-compatible smart TV | May work for general AirPlay, but F1 TV app support is not guaranteed. |
| iPhone/iPad to Roku, Fire TV, or Chromecast | Prefer the device’s native app or the Apple TV app where available. |
| Mac to television | Use a native app or HDMI if AirPlay is unreliable. |
| Viewer in the United States in 2026 | Verify the Apple TV subscription and F1 TV account-linking process. |
Apple’s general AirPlay guidance covers Apple TV, compatible smart TVs, and other receivers. That does not automatically mean the F1 TV app supports every one of them. The F1 TV App Store developer response specifically identifies an Apple TV box as the supported AirPlay destination and cautions that other combinations are not guaranteed.

Open F1 TV, start the video, tap the playback screen, select the AirPlay icon, and choose the Apple TV. Enter the passcode shown on the television if prompted.
If you are sending F1 TV to a smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, game console, or Mac and the destination does not appear—or video appears but will not play—switch to the receiver’s native F1 TV or Apple TV app. Apple notes that some video apps do not support AirPlay even when AirPlay itself is functioning.
2. Put both devices on the same non-guest Wi-Fi
Check the network name on both devices:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > Wi-Fi
- Apple TV: Settings > Network
Both should be connected to the same primary home network. Avoid guest, hotel, school, and office networks, which may allow internet access while blocking communication between devices. Client isolation, VLANs, and some mesh configurations can cause the same symptom.
If your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, connect both devices to the same network name and retry. Do not change advanced router isolation settings unless you understand their security impact.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
3. Check AirPlay receiving and restrictions
On a device being used as an AirPlay receiver, inspect its AirPlay settings. On iPhone, the current path is Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity. On a Mac, check System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff and the AirPlay Receiver settings.
On Apple TV, review AirPlay and Home settings. Home configuration can restrict which devices are allowed to use AirPlay. If the Apple TV is visible but requests a passcode, enter the code displayed on the television.
4. Update every software layer
Install available updates for:
- iOS or iPadOS
- tvOS
- The F1 TV app
- Router firmware, if network discovery is inconsistent
Apple recommends updating AirPlay devices as part of its troubleshooting process. Do not rely on a fixed minimum iOS or tvOS version: F1 TV requirements can change, so check the current F1 Help Center supported-devices information.
5. Restart the complete connection
A full restart is more useful than simply returning an app to the Home screen. Use this order:

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Force-close F1 TV.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Restart the Apple TV through its system controls, or power-cycle it.
- If the issue continues, unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for internet access to return.
- Reconnect both Apple devices to the same Wi-Fi and test F1 TV again.
The 30-second interval is a practical troubleshooting step, not a universal Apple requirement. Apple recommends restarting the devices involved and provides separate Apple TV network troubleshooting guidance.
6. Temporarily disable VPNs and security filters
VPNs, ad-blocking DNS, parental controls, iCloud Private Relay, and third-party security software can interfere with local discovery or playback authorization. Temporarily disable relevant filters and retry.
You can also test on another trusted network or a phone hotspot. If that works, the home network is the likely source. A hotspot is useful for diagnosis but may not be suitable for a full high-bandwidth live race stream.
The F1 TV developer specifically recommends disabling VPNs during troubleshooting, while Apple identifies VPNs and third-party security software as possible connectivity causes.

7. Reset the F1 TV app session
If F1 TV works directly on the phone but AirPlay does not, or the AirPlay icon disappeared after an app update, reset the app’s local state:
- Sign out of F1 TV.
- Force-close the app.
- Reopen it and sign in again.
- Update the app if an update is available.
- Delete and reinstall F1 TV.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad and Apple TV.
- If possible, test with another supported iPhone or iPad.
iOS and iPadOS do not provide a universal user-facing “clear cache” control for every app. Deleting and reinstalling F1 TV is the practical cache and local-state reset, but it is not guaranteed to fix an account, DRM, network, or service outage.
Diagnose the symptom
| Symptom | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| AirPlay icon is missing | Video is not playing, destination compatibility, app support, or network discovery. |
| Apple TV is not listed | Different Wi-Fi, guest-network isolation, AirPlay settings, VPN, or Apple TV networking. |
| Apple TV is listed but playback will not start | F1 TV app session, subscription, DRM, VPN, or receiver compatibility. |
| Black screen | App-specific casting restrictions, content protection, or an unsupported receiver. |
| Audio plays without video | Video handoff or content-protection behavior. |
| Stream disconnects during a race | Network congestion, unstable Wi-Fi, filtering, app instability, or service-side problems. |
| F1 TV fails directly on the phone too | Account, entitlement, regional availability, app, or F1 service issue rather than AirPlay alone. |
Check your subscription and region
Before repeatedly changing AirPlay settings, play the same content directly in the F1 TV app or on the F1 TV website and Help Center. Check whether live sessions, replays, and account details work independently of the television.
In the United States, the 2026 arrangement is different from the traditional standalone F1 TV setup. Apple says F1 is available through an Apple TV subscription, with F1 TV Premium accessible in the F1 TV app after the Apple Account is linked. Apple’s published price signal is $12.99 per month with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, but verify current terms on the official U.S. F1 viewing page.

When AirPlay is not the right solution
Native playback is usually preferable because it removes the phone-to-TV discovery and video handoff. Try the F1 TV app on a supported Apple TV, smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation, or Xbox where the current provider pages list it. In the United States, use the Apple TV app for the official F1 broadcast where appropriate.
HDMI from a compatible computer or mobile-device adapter is another fallback when wireless discovery is the problem. Check compatibility before buying an adapter: video-output support and content-protection behavior vary, so no generic Lightning, USB-C, or HDMI accessory can be guaranteed to work with every setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to contact F1 support
If direct F1 TV playback also fails after reauthentication, stop changing AirPlay settings. Check the F1 Help Center’s sections for supported devices, video and streaming problems, error codes, and subscription problems, then contact support if necessary.
Have these details ready:
- Country and subscription purchase route
- iPhone or iPad model and iOS/iPadOS version
- Apple TV model and tvOS version
- F1 TV app version
- Exact error message
- Whether direct playback works
- Whether other apps AirPlay successfully
Other apps working on AirPlay while F1 TV fails points toward F1 TV compatibility, DRM, account, or app-session behavior. If no app can see the Apple TV, focus first on Wi-Fi discovery, AirPlay settings, VPNs, and Apple TV networking.
