Top 5 LED Bulbs for Projector Headlights? What Drivers Need to Know

Projector headlights do not guarantee that a drop-in LED retrofit fits, makes a safe beam, or is legal. Understand the distinction and choose a replacement for your exact vehicle.

There is no defensible universal “top five” list of drop-in LED bulbs for projector headlights. A projector is an optical design, not proof that an LED retrofit fits, produces a compliant beam, or is legal for road use. First determine whether your vehicle has a complete integral LED headlamp or a replaceable-bulb headlamp; the distinction changes what replacement options may be appropriate.

Projector headlights do not determine bulb compatibility

A projector headlamp uses a lens and reflector arrangement to shape light. That description alone does not tell you the vehicle’s source type, the bulb it requires, the beam quality of a replacement, or whether a modification is allowed.

There are two different products often blurred together in LED-bulb lists:

  • Integral LED headlamp: LEDs are part of a complete headlamp designed and certified as an assembly.
  • LED retrofit source: An LED bulb is inserted into a headlamp designed for a replaceable halogen bulb.

These are not interchangeable categories. A bulb that fits into a socket is not thereby shown to meet the source dimensions and electrical specifications for that headlamp.

What U.S. rules say about LED bulb retrofits

In a February 13, 2024 interpretation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explained that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 sets performance requirements for complete integral-beam headlamps, including photometry and color, and requires the lower beam to be steady burning. For replaceable-bulb headlamps, the standard specifies source dimensions and electrical specifications intended to support interchangeability.

NHTSA said LEDs may be used as part of a compliant integral-beam headlamp, but that LED replaceable sources were not then permitted in replaceable-bulb headlamps under FMVSS No. 108. The letter states, “However, LEDs are not currently permitted in a replaceable bulb headlamp.” The agency also said individual vehicle-owner modifications are generally addressed by state law: “It is therefore left to State law to address installation of an LED replaceable light source in a headlamp.” See NHTSA’s February 13, 2024 interpretation. This is the agency’s interpretation on that date, not a current state-by-state legal check; check applicable state rules before modifying a vehicle.

What the named “top five” bulb evidence actually shows

The available named-product evidence is not a current comparative review and does not establish a top five. Three NHTSA-sponsored reports from 2020 examined identified H11 LED retrofit samples. Each report found failures among the submitted samples in listed dimensions, markings, and electrical characteristics/luminous-flux checks. The reports explicitly limit their findings to the samples tested; they do not establish that every product from those brands fails today.

Product identified in report Report date and submitted sample What the report found
Hikari LED H11 August 7, 2020; 16 sources received in eight two-bulb boxes Submitted samples failed the report’s listed dimensions, markings, and electrical characteristics/luminous-flux checks. Results apply only to those samples. NHTSA-sponsored report
Sealight LED H11 August 3, 2020; 16 sources received in eight two-bulb boxes Submitted samples failed the listed dimensions, markings, and electrical characteristics/luminous-flux checks. The report notes multiple H-type markings; results are sample-specific. NHTSA-sponsored report
JDM ASTAR T1 LED H11 August 7, 2020; 16 sources received in eight two-bulb boxes Submitted samples failed the listed dimensions, markings, and electrical characteristics/luminous-flux checks. Findings apply only to those samples. NHTSA-sponsored report

These reports are not tests of projector beam patterns, glare, or current product listings, and they are not brand-wide verdicts. No comparative five-product projector beam test or current model-by-model performance dataset is established here. Advertised lumen figures cannot substitute for evidence about beam shape and glare.

Safer options for a replaceable-bulb headlamp

Use the specified original-type source

For a replaceable halogen headlamp, check the owner’s manual and the vehicle’s bulb labeling for the exact source type, then use an original-spec replacement of that type. Do not assume H11—or any other bulb—is universal just because it appears in retrofit listings. Confirm fitment for the vehicle’s year, make, model, and trim.

Compatible with most vehicles, though some sensitive models may still require an additional decoder. Please confirm your original bulb model before purchase.

Consider a complete replacement headlamp only after verification

A complete replacement lamp assembly is different from putting an LED source into a halogen lamp. In a historical interpretation, NHTSA said a replacement lamp using a different light source may be permissible under FMVSS No. 108 if the vehicle manufacturer could have certified the vehicle using that replacement lamp. That is not blanket approval for a drop-in LED bulb. See NHTSA’s SEMA interpretation. Before buying an assembly, verify exact vehicle fitment and applicable compliance for the assembly and its intended use.

How to choose the right replacement for your vehicle

  1. Identify the headlamp type. Use the owner’s manual or vehicle documentation to determine whether the headlamp is an integral LED assembly or a replaceable-bulb unit.
  2. Confirm the specified source. For a replaceable-bulb unit, record the exact bulb type listed for your year, make, model, and trim.
  3. Choose the matching product category. Use an original-spec bulb for a replaceable halogen headlamp, or investigate a complete vehicle-specific replacement assembly rather than treating a retrofit source as an assembly.
  4. Check compliance and local rules. Review current agency guidance and the laws that apply where the vehicle is registered and driven; the 2024 NHTSA letter is not a state-by-state determination.
  5. Do not judge by socket fit or brightness claims alone. Neither physical fit nor advertised lumens establishes compliant source specifications, beam performance, or freedom from glare.
