The right Tacoma speaker depends on model year, cab, speaker location and factory audio system—not just brand. For a 2016–2023 non-JBL Double Cab, the common layout is 6×9-inch front-door speakers and 6.5-inch rear-door speakers. The five picks below cover budget, balanced, premium and amplifier-ready upgrades. If your truck has JBL audio, verify its amplifier, impedance and signal processing before buying: physical fit alone does not establish electrical compatibility.

Quick picks: five Tacoma speaker upgrades

Pick Best for Tacoma-relevant size or configuration Power and price notes
Kicker CS Series Budget upgrade 6.5-inch coaxial example for rear doors on many third-generation Double Cabs; choose the exact front model by vehicle fitment. The 46CSC654 was listed at $79.96 per pair on the retrieved Crutchfield page; retailer pricing can change. No RMS figure is established here for that listing.
Alpine S-Series Balanced everyday upgrade S2-S69 6×9 coaxial or component; S2-S65 6.5-inch coaxial. S2-S69: 85 W RMS, 90 dB sensitivity; Alpine listed it at $169.95. Other S-Series prices vary by model.
Sony Mobile ES XS-690ES Premium coaxial with an amplifier 6×9-inch, two-way coaxial. 110 W RMS, 90 dB sensitivity; Sony listed a $399.99 suggested retail price and out-of-stock status when retrieved.
Alpine R-Series High-output, amplified systems R2-S69 6×9 coaxial or R2-S69C component. R2-S69: 100 W RMS. Alpine listed the coaxial at $399.95 and component pair at $449.95 on their individual pages when retrieved.
JL Audio C1 Series Conservative, OEM-style replacement C1-690 6×9 and C1-650 6.5-inch coaxial models are among those in JL’s Tacoma guide. Current price and stock are not stated in the cited fitment guide; check a current seller listing.

These are use-case recommendations, not results of a controlled listening test. Specifications and listed prices come from the cited manufacturer or retailer pages; price and availability may change. A speaker’s RMS rating describes handling capability, not how loud it will play from a factory radio.

Check your Tacoma’s generation and audio package first

Tacoma fitment changes between generations. A speaker sold as “Tacoma compatible” is not necessarily right for every year, cab or location. Use the vehicle selector for the exact truck and verify each position before ordering. Crutchfield’s Tacoma vehicle selector separates model years, and its 2022 fitment page is an example for a third-generation truck.

Generation Fitment guidance What to verify
1995–2004, first generation Dash and door layouts differ from later trucks; do not apply later-generation recommendations by default. Exact year, cab, location, mounting depth and factory audio.
2005–2015, second generation Front-door 6×9 replacements are common, but fitment varies by cab and position. Mounting arrangement, adapters, wiring and any JBL equipment.
2016–2023, third generation A common non-JBL Double Cab layout is 6×9 front doors and 6.5-inch rear doors. Some trims also have dash speakers or tweeters. Cab, trim, exact location and JBL status. Do not assume every configuration uses the same locations.
2024–2026, fourth generation Do not reuse third-generation size assumptions. Crutchfield lists 6-3/4-inch front-door fitment on its 2024 and 2025 pages. Exact model year and factory audio configuration. Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma brochure describes 4-, 6- and 10-speaker configurations; applicable premium versions include JBL-branded equipment, an amplifier, subwoofer and JBL FLEX portable speaker.

For recent-model examples, consult the 2024 fitment page and 2025 fitment page. A listed size is a starting point, not a substitute for checking adapters, clearance and the specific truck’s audio package.

JBL is a compatibility checkpoint

A JBL-equipped Tacoma may use a factory amplifier, different impedance, crossover behavior and equalization from a non-JBL truck. Look for JBL badges on speaker grilles and check the vehicle documentation, but confirm the system architecture rather than relying on a badge alone. Before replacing speakers, establish the factory speaker impedance and whether the replacement is suitable for the factory amplifier’s output and signal. Depending on the system, an interface, bypass harness, DSP or amplifier may be needed. None of the five picks should be treated as a universal JBL plug-and-play replacement.

How to choose among the five

Kicker CS: best budget Tacoma speaker upgrade

The Kicker 46CSC654 is a 6.5-inch, two-way coaxial option to consider for a compatible rear-door location. The retrieved Crutchfield page listed it at $79.96 per pair, reduced from $99.99 at that time; that is a retailer price signal, not a fixed current price. See the 2025 Tacoma fitment and product page. Kicker’s KS Series page describes a separate product family; it should not be used to infer specifications for a CS model.

  • GREAT FIT FOR YOUR TOYOTA - Perfectly matched by our car audio experts, this speaker package was created for Toyota Tacoma 2005-2023 to save you research time when upgrading your standard factory speakers
  • BEST VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY - This all-in-one Kicker bundle is better together
  • SUPER EASY TO INSTALL - The included adapters and harnesses make it a simple and quick plug-and-play installation, with no cutting needed
  • Choose it for: a lower-cost, simple coaxial replacement in a verified location, particularly when upgrading rear speakers on a compatible third-generation Double Cab.
  • Factory-radio fit: a sensible entry point, but the truck’s head unit still sets the available clean power. Do not expect every replacement to be louder than stock.
  • Trade-off: Kicker models and sizes differ by location. Select the front and rear speakers separately through the vehicle fitment tool rather than assuming the 6.5-inch model fits every door.

Alpine S-Series: best all-around speaker family

Alpine offers multiple configurations that make it easier to match speaker type to installation. The S2-S69 is a 6×9-inch coaxial pair rated at 85 W RMS, 260 W peak, 90 dB sensitivity and a claimed 85 Hz–40 kHz response; Alpine listed it at $169.95. The S2-S69C is a 6×9-inch component set rated at 85 W RMS and uses separate midrange and tweeter elements with in-line crossovers. Alpine’s S-Series catalog also lists 6.5-inch S2-S65 coaxial and S2-S65C component options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it for: a balanced front-door upgrade, or a matching family across compatible front and rear locations.
  • Coaxial option: the S2-S69 is simpler when replacing a door speaker without relocating a tweeter.
  • Component option: the S2-S69C offers separate tweeter placement, but installation takes more planning and the intended benefit depends on good placement and wiring.
  • Specification caveat: the claimed frequency range and Hi-Res Audio certification do not prove audible improvement in a noisy cabin or strong bass from a Tacoma door.

Sony Mobile ES XS-690ES: best premium coaxial for an amplified Tacoma

Sony specifies the XS-690ES as a four-ohm, two-way 6×9 coaxial with 110 W RMS handling, 330 W peak, 90 dB sensitivity and a 35 Hz–40 kHz effective frequency range. Its product description lists an aramid-fiber-matrix woofer and one-inch soft-dome tweeter. Sony’s technical specifications provide the model details. The Sony page showed a $399.99 suggested retail price and out-of-stock status when retrieved, so check present availability before planning around it.

Pioneer F-Series TS-F1634R 6.5" 2-Way Coaxial Car Speakers 200W Max
  • Power Handling - Delivering 200W (25W nominal) with 4-ohm impedance, these car door speakers combine style and high-quality sound for a dynamic audio experience
  • 2-Way Coaxial Design - The innovative coaxial setup of these 6.5" car speakers integrates a woofer and tweeter for balanced, immersive sound, ensuring a full range of frequencies during your drive
  • Sensitivity - With an 88dB sensitivity rating, enjoy distortion-free music at higher volumes, ensuring a clear and loud audio experience with lower power inputs
  • 6.5" Standard Sizing - Designed with a standard 6.5-inch diameter, these vehicle speakers seamlessly integrate into most car interiors, offering versatility without compromising performance
  • Traditional Black - The sleek black finish enhances aesthetics and complements any vehicle interior, combining style seamlessly with high-quality sound
  • Choose it for: a premium front-door coaxial installation where an aftermarket amplifier can supply clean power.
  • Advantage: coaxial construction avoids separate tweeter mounting while offering a higher RMS rating than the S-Series example.
  • Trade-off: the cost is hard to justify for a factory-radio-only swap. The published 35 Hz lower limit is not a promise of strong 35 Hz bass in a vehicle door.

Alpine R-Series: best high-output Alpine upgrade

The R2-S69 is a 6×9 coaxial rated at 100 W RMS and 300 W peak, with a claimed 60 Hz–40 kHz response. Alpine describes a glass-fiber-reinforced cone, ferrite magnet structure, HAMR surround, magnesium hard-dome tweeter and in-line crossover network. The individual product page listed it at $399.95. The R2-S69C component pair was listed at $449.95. These are listed prices observed on the cited pages, not guaranteed current prices.

  • Choose it for: a front-stage upgrade in a truck with an aftermarket amplifier or a realistic plan to add one.
  • Configuration: choose coaxial for a simpler install or component if you can mount the tweeters and crossovers appropriately.
  • Trade-off: premium power handling offers little value if the factory source cannot provide clean output. The hard-dome tweeter may not suit listeners who prefer a softer presentation; that is a listening preference, not a measured defect.

JL Audio C1: best straightforward OEM-style upgrade

JL Audio’s Tacoma installation guide identifies 6×9-inch front and 6.5-inch rear factory locations for the 2016–2023 Double Cab platform and suggests C1-690 and C1-650 coaxials, among other options. It notes that adapters or modifications may be needed depending on configuration.

  • SUPER EASY TO INSTALL - The included adapters and harnesses make it a simple and quick plug-and-play installation, with no cutting needed

  • Installation note: the guide is useful for the covered platform, but it does not make every cab, trim or JBL configuration interchangeable.
  • Price note: the cited guide does not establish a current price or stock status; check a current seller listing.

Coaxial or component speakers?

A coaxial speaker places the tweeter and woofer together. It is usually the simpler route for replacing a factory door speaker and is a practical choice for a factory-radio upgrade. A component set separates the tweeter and woofer and includes crossover elements; it can improve control over front-stage imaging when the tweeter is placed well and the system is installed correctly. It also adds mounting and wiring work. Components are not automatically better if the tweeter stays in a poor location or the source cannot drive the speakers cleanly.

What a speaker-only upgrade can—and cannot—change

Replacing worn or basic factory speakers can improve vocal clarity, midrange definition, high-frequency detail and durability. The extent of the change depends on the condition of the originals, the replacement’s sensitivity and voicing, the factory signal and installation quality.

  • It may not make the system much louder: the head unit or factory amplifier limits clean output. A high RMS rating is not a volume boost by itself.
  • It will not correct every factory EQ or crossover issue: factory processing can shape the signal before it reaches the speaker.
  • It is not a subwoofer replacement: a door speaker’s published low-frequency limit does not guarantee deep bass in a leaky, untreated door.
  • It will not relocate the soundstage: speaker locations remain where Toyota placed them unless the installation changes them.

If bass is the weak point, first check door sealing and mounting. Sound treatment can reduce panel resonance and help create a more stable mounting surface. A suitable amplifier is a separate step for more clean output; a powered subwoofer is the more direct route to genuine low bass. JBL systems may need system integration beyond a basic speaker swap.

Buying checklist: confirm fit and electrical match

  1. Identify the truck: record model year, Access Cab or Double Cab, trim, factory audio package and target speaker location.
  2. Check the exact vehicle: use the Tacoma fitment selector and confirm front, rear and any dash-speaker positions separately.
  3. Confirm JBL status and impedance: identify whether the factory system uses an amplifier and verify speaker impedance. Do not connect a lower-impedance speaker unless the amplifier is designed for that load.
  4. Compare RMS and sensitivity: use RMS rather than peak watts for power handling. Higher sensitivity can help with limited power, but ratings may use different test conditions and do not predict tonal balance or distortion.
  5. Check physical clearance: verify mounting depth, magnet and window clearance, screw pattern and grille clearance. A speaker that fits the opening can still collide with the glass or trim.
  6. Account for installation parts: establish whether you need a mounting bracket, wiring adapter, screws or speed clips, grille, crossover or tweeter mount. Do not assume these are included or free.
  7. Choose coaxial or component: consider installation complexity and tweeter placement, not only the product tier.
  8. Plan for the door environment: use secure mounting, appropriate sealing and restore the moisture barrier. Doors encounter moisture, vibration, dust and temperature changes.

Install in stages and diagnose before replacing more parts

Upgrade the front stage first

For a 2016–2023 non-JBL Double Cab, a practical sequence is to replace the front doors first, because those speakers are closest to the driver. If the result is not enough, address door sealing and treatment, then consider rear speakers. Add an amplifier if the system is still too quiet or clips at higher volume; add a subwoofer if low bass is the goal. Replacing all speakers immediately is not always the best use of the budget.

Installation checks

  • Follow the vehicle and accessory instructions for disconnecting the battery before working near wiring.
  • Keep factory screws and clips until the installation is complete, and use a suitable wiring adapter where available rather than cutting factory wiring.
  • Check polarity before reinstalling the door panel; reversed polarity can weaken bass when speakers play together.
  • Move the window through its full travel before finalizing the speaker and mounting hardware.
  • Ensure tweeters, grilles and wiring do not interfere with airbags or window mechanisms.
  • Restore the moisture barrier and door-panel insulation, then listen for rattles at several volume levels.

Use symptoms to find the cause

Symptom Possible causes to check
New speakers sound quieter than stock Lower sensitivity, factory EQ limiting the signal, amplifier mismatch, incorrect impedance, polarity or phase error, or an air leak around the mounting adapter.
Sound is harsh Speaker voicing, factory EQ boost, tweeter placement, reflections from the door or clipping from the head unit or amplifier.
Bass remains weak Door leakage, an unsealed mounting adapter, factory high-pass filtering, insufficient amplifier power or expecting a door speaker to replace a subwoofer.
JBL system sounds worse after the swap Factory equalization, nonstandard impedance, crossover behavior or sensitivity mismatch. Stop changing speakers at random and verify the system architecture; integration hardware or system-specific tuning may be required.
