Small campers are no longer limited to conventional teardrop trailers. The 2025 crop includes pickup-bed shells, roof-mounted pods, inflatable tent trailers, a Jeep Wrangler conversion and ultra-light towables aimed at compact cars.
These are not a like-for-like ranking. Some are production campers, some were new launches and others were still prototypes or being finalized during 2025. The useful question is not simply which one is “best,” but whether you need a trailer, a vehicle-mounted camper, a sleeping shell or a genuinely self-contained cabin.

Weights are not directly interchangeable. A dry shell, an empty camper and a ready-to-camp trailer can have very different real-world weights. Payload, tongue weight, roof-load limits and hitch ratings matter more than a headline number.
1. Freedom Camper
The Freedom Camper is a hard-sided shell without wheels of its own. It can sit in a pickup bed or be installed on a trailer platform, making it one of the simplest ways to create a sleeping compartment without buying a conventional RV.

Manufacturer specifications list versions from 185 lb, with sleeping room for two. Available footprints include 48 × 79 inches, 58 × 79 inches, 58 × 89 inches and 72 × 89 inches. The 58 × 89-inch version is listed at 195 lb and measures 89 × 58 × 54 inches externally.
This is a weather-protective sleeping shell, not a self-contained travel trailer. There is no built-in bathroom or kitchen, so buyers should think of it as an upgrade to truck camping rather than a tiny motorhome.
2. Scamp X
The Scamp X is Scamp’s off-road-focused entry, built around the company’s familiar compact molded-fiberglass trailer format. Its equipment includes Timbren HD 3500 suspension, off-road tires, an optional roof rack, rooftop solar and an 8-foot awning.
The cited layouts use a U-shaped rear dinette that converts into the main 54 × 76-inch bed. The TRK layout adds front bunks, giving it more flexibility for families or gear-heavy trips. Exact weight and price depend on the floor plan and options, so those figures should be confirmed with Scamp before comparing it with lighter micro-trailers.

Wheelhome’s Dashaway is unusual because the concept has existed in both vehicle-mounted and trailer-based forms. The Dashaway eRC began as a pod carried on a Tesla Model 3, while the Dashaway eCT evolved into a trailer-based version.
Inside, the eRC combines a loveseat, sink area, shelves, workstation, storage and a toilet. The sofa converts into a double bed. That makes it more versatile than a simple sleeping pod, although the compact interior necessarily involves converting the space between uses.
The eCT was still being finalized in late 2025. Wheelhome planned UK pricing of £26,225 including VAT and mainland-UK delivery. That is a UK price for the planned trailer and should not be presented as a US retail figure or as proof that the final specification was fixed.
4. Roofroomer Native
The Roofroomer Native takes the vehicle-mounted approach further than a typical roof tent. It is a hard-sided, L-shaped pod designed for ordinary cars, SUVs and vans rather than only pickup trucks. The layout places a double bed above the vehicle and includes a kitchen and bathroom area.

- SECURE TRAILERS, RVS AND TOWING EQUIPMENT: This Master Lock trailer coupler lock helps deter theft by blocking unauthorized coupling, making it a dependable trailer hitch lock for parked trailers, RVs, campers, boat trailers, and utility trailers.
- UNIVERSAL FIT FOR COMMON COUPLER SIZES: Designed to fit 1-7/8 in. (48 mm), 2 in. (51 mm), and most 2-5/16 in. (59 mm) trailer couplers, this trailer tongue lock gives shoppers one versatile solution for multiple towing setups.
- ADVANCED LOCKING SECURITY: The locking mechanism is engineered to resist picking and prying with visible, keyed trailer coupler protection.
- RUST AND CORROSION-RESISTANT ZINC BUILD: Durable zinc construction helps this trailer hitch coupler lock stand up to outdoor storage, changing weather, boat ramps, campsites, jobsites, and everyday driveway use.
- READY TO USE WITH TWO KEYS: Includes one universal trailer coupler lock and two keys, giving you a complete keyed hitch lock solution for securing towing equipment between trips, during storage, or when your trailer is unattended.
The base Native is listed at 110 kg, or 243 lb. Installation is not just a matter of bolting a box to roof bars: the vehicle needs a tow hitch rated to carry at least 85 kg, or 188 lb, and roof crossbars rated for at least 75 kg, or 165 lb.
Those limits must be checked against the specific vehicle, the carrier system and the loaded camper. A lightweight pod can still exceed a car’s dynamic roof-load rating or hitch-mounted static-load capacity.
5. Urbanoid Booba
The Urbanoid Booba is a folding micro-trailer that expands with an inflatable tent section. It weighs approximately 530 lb and measures between 7.2 and 10.7 feet long, depending on the telescoping tow-bar position.
Its layout provides sleeping and dining space, integrated LED lighting and an optional external shower. An optional roll-on frame allows vertical storage, which could be useful for owners with a narrow garage or limited driveway space.

One important limitation: the Booba does not include a kitchen. An optional swing-out barbecue provides an outdoor cooking solution, but it is not equivalent to an integrated galley. Availability was also tied to a later launch window, so buyers should verify ordering status rather than assume a 2025 announcement means immediate delivery.
6. Aliner Switchback
The Aliner Switchback is a pickup-bed camper, not a trailer. Its 375-lb dry weight and quick setup are the main attractions. Aliner lists a 60 × 72-inch bed, a 63.5-inch closed length, a 49.5-inch closed height and an 85.5-inch open height. Setup is advertised at less than 30 seconds.
It uses aluminum-frame construction, insulation, tinted safety-glass windows and exterior storage drawers. The trade-off is equipment: there is no kitchen and no bathroom. It is best viewed as a fast-deploying enclosed bed for a compatible pickup, with cooking and sanitation handled separately.
7. Ecno Evil Unit-1
The Ecno Evil Unit-1 is a wood-free squaredrop trailer with a high-density polyethylene body on an aluminum chassis. The basic 4 × 8-foot version was reported with a starting price of $13,990, while the 5 × 8-foot version started at $16,490.

Inside, the equipment is deliberately restrained: mattress space, shelves, lighting and a roof fan. Solar and portable power are optional, and a rear storage hatch adds room for outdoor equipment. This is an enclosed sleeping trailer for buyers who value a rugged, low-maintenance shell over a full interior kitchen or bathroom.
8. Grumpy Bear Arctos Sport
The Arctos Sport is a pickup-bed camper shaped somewhat like a teardrop mounted on a pedestal. Its shell weighs just under 700 lb, while a standard equipped version weighs slightly more than 1,100 lb before additional options.
The interior has more than 6 feet of peak height. A convertible dinette forms a 53 × 74-inch bed, giving the camper a more usable interior than many low-profile truck-bed shells. Grumpy Bear also describes it as four-season construction.
The shell version was listed from $12,000. Pickup owners should use the equipped, loaded weight—not the shell figure—when checking payload, especially if adding batteries, water, recovery gear or a roof rack.
9. Gr8tops JPOD
The Gr8tops JPOD is not a trailer. It is a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited conversion that removes the rear cab section and creates a compact squaredrop-style camper on the resulting JTRUK platform.
The prototype measured approximately 7 × 6 × 4 feet. Its estimated weight was 475 lb for the empty shell and 550 lb with a basic interior. The prototype included a sofa/bed, chest refrigerator and overhead storage.
Final production pricing and specifications were not available in the 2025 report. The $4,900 figure sometimes associated with the project was the starting price for the required JTRUK conversion, not the complete JPOD camper. Buyers should also account for the permanent nature and resale implications of cutting and converting a Wrangler.
10. Kleox Festival
The Kleox Festival is a conventional teardrop small enough to target compact and electric cars. It weighs under 500 lb, or 228 kg, and uses a side door rather than the rear-entry arrangement of the earlier Kleox Shelter Travel.

Its low mass gives it a wider potential tow-vehicle audience than most travel trailers. The design was even reported as towable by some trikes and quadricycles, although local regulations, hitch availability and braking requirements still need to be checked.
The Festival appeared as a rental model in 2024 and entered the retail lineup in 2025. Pricing and availability can therefore vary by market and should be confirmed directly before treating it as an immediately orderable camper.
11. Peak Performance Ultralight Nest
The Ultralight Nest is a modular hard-wall pickup camper rather than a fixed-layout box. It uses interchangeable modules and a mounting grid, allowing the owner to configure the interior around sleeping, storage or other equipment needs.
Current manufacturer listings show five-, 5.5- and six-foot versions weighing 500, 525 and 550 lb. Starting prices are listed at $20,375, $21,000 and $21,625, respectively. The six-foot version is designed for truck beds approximately 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 3 inches long with the tailgate retained.

Fitment is especially important here. Bed length, wheel-well dimensions, payload and the mounting system all need to match the truck. The 500-lb figure is not a universal weight for every Nest configuration or accessory package.

The South African Naledi Camper is a teardrop trailer focused on views. Large side windows and a glass door create a broad sightline from the sleeping area, making it distinctive among compact trailers.
It also includes a kitchen with a sink, microwave and cooking options, along with side awnings. One awning can be fitted with privacy panels, adding useful outdoor living space without making the trailer substantially larger.
The reported starting price was R289,000, converted at the time to approximately US$15,800. That conversion is not a US delivered price: shipping, taxes, local compliance work, options and dealer costs could materially change the final figure.

What to check before buying a tiny camper
- Identify the format. A pickup camper uses payload capacity; a roof pod uses roof and hitch limits; a trailer uses tow rating, tongue weight and possibly brake requirements.
- Calculate loaded weight. Add occupants, bedding, food, water, propane, batteries, tools and accessories to the advertised dry or shell weight.
- Measure the vehicle. For truck campers, check bed length, width between wheel wells, tailgate clearance and payload. For roof systems, verify both dynamic and parked static ratings.
- Decide whether you need facilities. The Freedom Camper and Switchback provide sleeping space but no kitchen or bathroom. The Booba also lacks a kitchen. A compact shell may require a separate stove, cooler and portable toilet.
- Confirm legal and market status. Prototype announcements, planned prices and foreign-market figures are not the same as a US production vehicle available for immediate delivery.
- Inspect the towing hardware. Confirm hitch class, tongue-weight rating, wiring, coupler size, tire load rating and whether trailer brakes are required where you live.
Which type makes the most sense?
Choose the Freedom Camper or Aliner Switchback if you already own a suitable pickup and mainly want a fast, enclosed sleeping space. The Arctos Sport adds more interior height and comfort, while the Ultralight Nest is the more configurable option.
The Kleox Festival is the clearest match for a very small tow vehicle, while the Ecno Evil Unit-1 offers a more conventional enclosed trailer for buyers willing to tow a little more. The Scamp X is the stronger candidate for off-road trailer travel, provided its size and final specification suit the tow vehicle.
Pick the Roofroomer Native or Wheelhome Dashaway when retaining the car or SUV as the primary vehicle matters more than having a separate trailer. The JPOD is a specialist choice for Jeep owners, and the Naledi stands out for its kitchen and unusually open cabin. The Booba is compelling for storage and light towing, but its tent-based design and lack of a kitchen make it a different proposition from a hard-sided teardrop.
FAQ
Are all 12 of these campers available to buy?
No. The list includes established products, new launches, planned models and prototypes. The Wheelhome eCT was still being finalized, the Gr8tops JPOD was a prototype, and the Booba’s ordering timeline was not the same as a fully established retail product.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Which of these tiny campers can a small car tow?
The Kleox Festival is specifically aimed at small and electric cars and weighs under 500 lb. The exact answer still depends on the car’s tow rating, tongue-weight limit, hitch installation and local brake regulations. Never use trailer weight alone as the buying decision.
Which campers are not trailers?
The Freedom Camper, Aliner Switchback, Grumpy Bear Arctos Sport and Peak Performance Ultralight Nest are pickup-bed campers or pods. The Roofroomer Native is vehicle-mounted, the Wheelhome Dashaway has vehicle-pod and trailer versions, and the Gr8tops JPOD is a Jeep Wrangler conversion.
Does the lightest camper provide the best value?
Not necessarily. Lower weight can mean no kitchen, no bathroom, less insulation or a tent-based sleeping area. Compare the loaded weight, facilities, setup time, weather protection and compatibility with your vehicle rather than choosing by the smallest number.
The Bottom Line
The most important distinction in this 2025 selection is not brand or price; it is architecture. A 185-lb Freedom Camper, a 375-lb Switchback and a sub-500-lb Kleox Festival solve different problems because one sits in a truck, one uses a pickup bed and one is towed behind a vehicle. Check payload and towing figures with the camper loaded, verify whether the product is actually available in your market, and treat prototype or converted-price claims cautiously.
