Top 10 Ways to Fix the My BMW App Not Updating (2026)

A stale My BMW App timestamp does not automatically mean your BMW is unlocked or defective. Follow these 10 troubleshooting steps, from refreshing the Vehicle tab to checking ConnectedDrive, privacy consent, and vehicle cellular coverage.

A stale My BMW App status does not automatically mean your BMW is unlocked, uncharged, unsafe, or defective. It usually means the app has not received a newer vehicle-status update. Start by opening the Vehicle tab and pulling down to refresh, then use Check Status. If the timestamp remains unchanged, work through the phone, account, vehicle-connection, privacy, and ConnectedDrive steps below in order.

The My BMW App can report information such as the last vehicle-status update, fuel level or state of charge, estimated range, door and window status, alarm status, tire condition, service information, and available Remote Software Upgrades. The exact features depend on the BMW model, equipment, software, ConnectedDrive services, and market.

First, understand what “not updating” means

The My BMW App is a remote-status and ConnectedDrive client. It is not a direct replacement for inspecting the vehicle. The app displays information received from BMW’s connected services, and that information may not be instantaneous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before troubleshooting, note the last-update time shown in the Vehicle tab. Then refresh the app and compare the timestamp. If it changes, the app has received newer information. If it does not, that is useful diagnostic information—but it still does not prove that the vehicle’s current physical state is different from what the app shows.

For a security-critical question, such as whether the vehicle is locked, physically inspect it or use another trusted confirmation method. Avoid repeatedly sending lock, unlock, engine-start, or climate commands when the app has not confirmed completion.

1. Pull down to refresh the Vehicle tab

BMW identifies this as the first way to request an updated vehicle status.

  1. Open the My BMW App.
  2. Select the Vehicle tab.
  3. Pull down on the page and release it to refresh.
  4. Open the vehicle and select Check Status, if that option is shown.
  5. Review categories such as doors and windows, security overview, services, and other available status details.

Record the displayed last-update time before and after refreshing. A refresh that completes without changing the timestamp may mean the vehicle has not delivered a newer update, the phone cannot reach BMW’s service, the vehicle’s cellular connection is unavailable, or the ConnectedDrive setup is incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the phone’s internet connection

The app cannot retrieve a new status if the phone cannot reach BMW’s online service. Open another website or app to test the connection, then try the following:

  • Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or from cellular data to Wi-Fi.
  • Temporarily turn the active connection off and back on.
  • Enable airplane mode for about 10 seconds, then disable it.
  • Move to an area with a stronger signal if cellular coverage is poor.
  • Restart the phone if other apps also have connection problems.

On Android, check whether a data indicator is present and whether the app is allowed to use mobile data. On iPhone, make sure cellular data is enabled for the My BMW App under the phone’s cellular settings. A working Wi-Fi connection at home does not rule out a problem with the vehicle’s separate cellular connection, and a strong phone signal does not guarantee that the BMW can contact ConnectedDrive.

3. Update the My BMW App and phone software

An outdated app or phone operating system can cause login, display, or communication problems. App-store version numbers and supported operating systems change, so check the current listing rather than relying on a version number from an older guide.

  • iPhone or iPad: Open the App Store, select your account, and check for pending app updates. Also check Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Android: Open Google Play, select your profile, choose Manage apps & device, and install any available My BMW App update. Check the phone’s system-update screen as well; the exact path varies by manufacturer.

Install updates supported by your device, restart the phone, and try Vehicle > Check Status again. If the app-store listing says the app is already current but the phone is running an old operating system, the operating-system compatibility may still be relevant.

4. Force-close the app, then restart the phone

A temporary app process or network session can remain stuck even when the phone appears to be online.

  1. Force-close or swipe away the My BMW App according to your phone’s normal app-management method.
  2. Open it again and retry Check Status.
  3. If the timestamp is still stale, restart the phone.
  4. After the restart, sign in if requested and check the Vehicle tab again.

Restarting is deliberately earlier in the process than deleting the app. Reinstalling can remove locally stored app data and may require you to restore BMW credentials, vehicle access, or pairing information.

5. Review phone restrictions affecting the app

Phone power-saving and privacy settings can restrict background activity or location-dependent functions. They are worth checking, but changing them is not a guaranteed fix: BMW’s core requirements also include active vehicle services, data consent, and a mobile connection for the vehicle.

iPhone

  • Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  • Check the My BMW App’s location permission and select an option appropriate for the features you use. Apple’s Always option permits background location access where the app supports it.
  • Check Settings > Battery and temporarily disable Low Power Mode while testing. Low Power Mode reduces or disables some background functions, including Background App Refresh.
  • Review Settings > General > Background App Refresh if background updates or notifications are also delayed.

Android

  • Open the My BMW App’s entry under Settings > Apps.
  • Review its battery setting and avoid an aggressive restriction such as “Restricted” while testing.
  • Confirm that background data and mobile-data access are allowed.
  • Check whether the phone’s battery-saver or data-saver mode is limiting the app.

Android menu names differ among Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and other devices. Do not grant broader permissions than you are comfortable with, and remember that location permission alone cannot repair a missing vehicle cellular connection or inactive ConnectedDrive service.

6. Sign out and back in with the correct BMW ID

The app must be signed in with the BMW ID associated with the vehicle. A vehicle may be missing, show incomplete services, or fail to update if the phone is using another BMW ID.

  1. Open the app’s profile or account area and confirm the BMW ID account.
  2. Sign out, then sign back in with the account that has access to the vehicle.
  3. Verify that the expected BMW appears in the vehicle list.
  4. Open the vehicle and try Check Status.

If the BMW ID is temporarily disabled after repeated incorrect passwords, use Forgot password and complete BMW’s reset process instead of continuing to guess. Passkeys may also be available when the phone and BMW ID have been configured to use them.

7. Confirm that the vehicle is paired and Remote Services are active

Seeing a vehicle in the account does not necessarily mean that every remote capability is fully activated. Confirm the vehicle association and the status of Remote Services in the My BMW App or the My BMW portal.

BMW vehicles using BMW Operating System 8 or newer can be added automatically when the driver logs into the vehicle with the BMW ID. BMW also provides an Add vehicle flow in the app. Follow the prompts for your vehicle and confirm that the VIN and account are correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Services activation may take a few minutes. BMW notes that activation requires mobile connectivity for both the phone and the vehicle’s SIM. If the car is in a location with no usable vehicle signal, activation or status retrieval may not complete until it reaches coverage.

After activation, wait briefly, reopen the app, and compare the last-update timestamp. If the vehicle appears but services are absent or incomplete, that is more likely an account, service-activation, market, equipment, or vehicle-connection issue than a simple app-refresh problem.

8. Check vehicle privacy consent and cellular connectivity

BMW identifies three important prerequisites for vehicle status:

  1. Remote Services are activated.
  2. The driver has agreed to transmission of vehicle data in the vehicle’s privacy settings.
  3. The BMW has a working mobile connection.

In the vehicle, open the iDrive privacy or data-sharing menu and confirm that the required vehicle-data consent is enabled. The exact menu wording depends on the BMW’s software generation and market.

Then consider the vehicle’s location. A BMW parked underground, inside a concrete structure, in a weak-coverage area, or in a region affected by older cellular-network limitations may not be able to deliver a current status. Move the vehicle to an area with better coverage where safe and practical, then allow time for the connection to recover.

Do not assume that every BMW supports every My BMW feature. Availability varies by model, model year, equipment, software, ConnectedDrive subscription or service, and country. Compare the vehicle with BMW’s current ConnectedDrive Service Availability Matrix for the relevant market rather than treating another BMW owner’s app features as a guarantee for yours.

Plug the scanner into the OBDII port with OBDII cable to start the diagnosis.

Instead of taking your cars to dealership, this FOXWELL scanner will help you do a thorough scanning and detection for your cars and pinpoint the root cause. Only then can the scanner be used to clear the corresponding fault code.
  • [5 in 1 Car Diagnostic Scanner] Compared with obd scanners (50-100), NT604 Elite code scanner not only includes their OBDII diagnosis but also serves as ABS/SRS scanner, transmission and check engine code reader. When it’s an odb2 scanner, you can use it to check if your car is ready for annual test through I/M readiness menu. In addition, live data stream, built-in DTC library, data play back and print, all these features are a big plus for it. Note: doesn't support maintenance functions like reset or relearn. AUTOVIN may not work on some older vehicles or certain vehicle brands. If AUTOVIN fails, please input the vin code manually or go to the Diagnostic Menu to select your vehicle model.
  • [Solid protective case KO plastic carrying bag] + [Lifetime update] Almost all same price-level car scanner diagnostic tool only offers plastic bag to hold the scanner. However, NT604 Elite automotive scanner is equipped with solid protective case, preventing your obd2 scanner from damage. Then you don’t need to pay extra money to buy a solid toolbox.

9. Refresh ConnectedDrive services from iDrive

If the phone and account look correct, refresh the vehicle’s ConnectedDrive services from iDrive. BMW uses different paths for different operating-system generations:

BMW software generation Refresh path
BMW Operating System 7 Open BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive, press Options, and select Update BMW Assist.
BMW Operating System 8 or 8.5 Open All Apps > System settings > Update apps and services.
BMW Operating System 9 Open All Apps > ConnectedDrive Store > Manage, then select the refresh icon.

Labels can differ by vehicle software, region, and update level. If your screen uses different wording, follow the equivalent ConnectedDrive or services-refresh option shown by the vehicle rather than forcing the path above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the refresh completes, wait a few minutes, open the My BMW App, and check whether the last-update time changes. If the in-car refresh fails as well, the problem is less likely to be limited to the phone app.

10. Restart the central display, then contact BMW if the timestamp stays stale

BMW provides a central-display software reset for abnormal software performance, unresponsive controls, and some connectivity-related issues. This is not the same as repairing a failed 12-volt battery, telematics module, vehicle antenna, cellular service, or BMW backend.

  1. Turn the vehicle on.
  2. Press and hold the central display’s volume wheel for about 30 seconds.
  3. Release it when the screen goes black.
  4. Wait for the central information display to restart.
  5. Once the vehicle is ready, retry the ConnectedDrive refresh and then check the app’s timestamp.

If the My BMW App still will not update, use Profile > Help & contact in the app or contact BMW ConnectedDrive support. Give support enough detail to distinguish a phone problem from a vehicle or service problem:

  • VIN and BMW ID email address
  • Phone make and model
  • iOS or Android version
  • My BMW App version
  • BMW model, model year, and vehicle software version if known
  • The exact last-update timestamp
  • Where the vehicle was parked and whether cellular coverage was weak
  • Whether the in-car ConnectedDrive refresh succeeded or failed
  • Which Vehicle-tab categories are stale or missing

BMW support can determine whether the vehicle’s services, account permissions, and connected-car records require further action. Do not claim that BMW’s servers are experiencing an outage unless BMW or a current, reliable incident source confirms it; there is not necessarily a universal public real-time outage dashboard.

Should you reinstall the My BMW App?

Reinstalling is a later troubleshooting step, not the best first move. Try the refresh, connection, update, restart, account, pairing, privacy, and in-car steps first. If you do reinstall:

  3. Delete and redownload the app through the phone’s official app store.

Deleting an app can remove data stored locally on the phone. If the vehicle association or Remote Services setup is not restored afterward, use BMW’s account and ConnectedDrive support rather than repeatedly reinstalling.

What not to buy or do for a stale app timestamp

A generic OBD-II scanner is not an evidence-backed remedy for a My BMW App synchronization failure. Nor are a phone booster, wireless charger, battery maintainer, or jump starter. Those products may be useful for separate diagnostic, charging, electrical, or phone problems, but the supplied BMW troubleshooting requirements do not establish them as fixes for missing ConnectedDrive status.

Likewise, the BMW Driver’s Guide app is not a substitute for the My BMW App for vehicle-status information. BMW directs owners to the My BMW App for that purpose; the Driver’s Guide does not synchronize the vehicle’s current status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fast decision tree

  • The timestamp changes after pull-to-refresh: The app received a newer status. Review the displayed details, while remembering that remote status is not a physical inspection.
  • Other phone apps are offline: Fix Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity first.
  • Only the My BMW App is failing: Update it, force-close it, restart the phone, and review app restrictions.
  • The BMW is missing or services are incomplete: Check the BMW ID, vehicle pairing, and Remote Services activation.
  • The phone works but the vehicle cannot refresh in iDrive: Check privacy consent, vehicle cellular coverage, software generation, and ConnectedDrive availability.
  • In-car refresh succeeds but the app remains stale: Recheck the BMW ID, refresh the phone app, and contact ConnectedDrive support if the timestamp remains unchanged.
  • You need to know whether the vehicle is secure right now: Physically inspect it or use another trusted confirmation method rather than relying on an unconfirmed remote command.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a stale My BMW App timestamp mean my car is unlocked?

No. It means the app has not received a newer vehicle-status update. It does not, by itself, prove that the BMW is unlocked, uncharged, misplaced, or mechanically defective. Physically inspect the vehicle or use another trusted confirmation method for a security-critical check.

Why does the My BMW App show an old vehicle status?

Possible causes include a temporary phone connection problem, an outdated or restricted app, an incorrect BMW ID, inactive Remote Services, missing vehicle-data consent, poor cellular coverage at the BMW, incompatible or unavailable ConnectedDrive features, or a vehicle ConnectedDrive software issue.

How do I manually refresh BMW ConnectedDrive?

In the app, open Vehicle and pull down to refresh, then select Check Status. In the vehicle, the path depends on software: BMW Operating System 7 uses BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive, Options, and Update BMW Assist; BMW Operating System 8 or 8.5 uses All Apps, System settings, and Update apps and services; BMW Operating System 9 uses All Apps, ConnectedDrive Store, Manage, and the refresh icon.

Will reinstalling the My BMW App fix synchronization?

It may help with damaged local app state, but it should be a later step. First check the connection, updates, app restart, BMW ID, pairing, Remote Services, privacy consent, vehicle coverage, and in-car ConnectedDrive refresh. Reinstalling can remove local data and require you to restore BMW credentials or vehicle access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an OBD-II scanner fix the My BMW App?

There is no evidence in the supplied BMW troubleshooting guidance that a generic OBD-II scanner fixes stale ConnectedDrive data. It may be useful for separate vehicle diagnostics, but it should not be presented as a solution to an app synchronization problem.

The Bottom Line

Start with Vehicle > pull down to refresh > Check Status, then test the phone connection, update and restart the app and phone, verify the BMW ID and Remote Services, check vehicle privacy consent and cellular coverage, refresh ConnectedDrive from iDrive, and reset the central display if necessary. If the last-update timestamp remains stale, document the details and contact BMW ConnectedDrive support. Treat the app as remote information—not as a substitute for physically confirming the vehicle’s condition or security.
