For a broad mix of production cars and customization, Gran Turismo 7 is a strong console choice; for focused GT competition, choose Assetto Corsa Competizione; and for PC physics and a mod-oriented ecosystem, consider Assetto Corsa. This is a curated shortlist, not a measured 1–10 ranking: realism, tuning depth, accessibility and racing focus differ across these games.
“Realism” is not one score. A simulator, simcade game and arcade racer describe broad design tendencies, not a guarantee of how demanding every car or event will feel. Assists, difficulty settings and vehicle type can all change the experience, as explained in CarsGuide’s 2026 sim-racing guide. Tuning can likewise mean setup adjustments, upgrade parts, cosmetic changes or community-made vehicle configurations.
How these car-tuning games compare
The order below is an editorial shortlist based on simulation focus, tuning or customization, platform access and the kind of experience each game serves. It is not a laboratory test or an official ranking. Platform availability and early-access status can change, so check the current store listing for your system before buying.
| Game | Best fit | Realism and tuning emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Gran Turismo 7 | Console players wanting production cars and varied customization | Accessible driving, performance tuning and extensive visual options |
| Assetto Corsa | PC players seeking physics-focused driving and mod flexibility | Simulation-oriented vehicle behaviour; built-in customization plus community mods |
| Assetto Corsa Competizione | GT3/GT4 and endurance racing | Detailed race-car physics and setup, with little emphasis on street-car customization |
| Forza Motorsport | Accessible circuit racing on Xbox and PC | Simcade balance of driving approachability, car variety and setup work |
| BeamNG.drive | PC players interested in vehicle behaviour and configuration | Vehicle-focused experimentation; wheel and force-feedback controls are configurable |
| Assetto Corsa EVO | Players interested in a developing modern simulation | Serious setup and varied cars; still in Early Access according to current comparison coverage |
| Automobilista 2 | PC players seeking varied racing categories | Simulation focus, with AI, weather and VR highlighted by current guides |
| iRacing | Organized online competition | Competitive simulation and race setup, rather than broad street-car customization |
| CarX Drift Racing Online | Drift builds and drift driving | Drift-oriented tuning; not a comprehensive circuit simulator |
| Forza Horizon 6 | Open-world driving and tuning variety | Less simulation-first than dedicated circuit racing games |
1. Gran Turismo 7: best all-round console choice
Gran Turismo 7 combines production cars, collecting, accessible racing and a broad set of performance and visual customization options. Polyphony Digital’s official game page says players can tune performance and modify bodywork. Its feature listing cites more than 130 wheel designs and 650 aero parts; these are the publisher’s current page counts, accessed in 2026, not figures established for the game’s 2022 launch. Parts and conversions are not necessarily available for every car.

The same official page describes physics modelling that accounts for changes in downforce from ride height, as well as wind and turbulence. That makes GT7 a useful middle ground: there is meaningful setup and customization to explore without requiring every player to begin with a specialist race-simulation background.
Choose it if: you want a substantial road-car collection, performance upgrades and appearance changes in a console-focused package. Polyphony Digital’s tagline captures its emphasis: “Drive. Collect. Customize. Discover the pure joy of cars once more in the world of Gran Turismo 7.”
2. Assetto Corsa: best for physics-focused driving and PC mods
The original Assetto Corsa is a strong choice for PC players who prioritize vehicle behaviour and the flexibility of a mod-friendly ecosystem. Its official materials describe licensed cars and simulation features including tyre flat spots and heat-cycle effects, advanced aerodynamics, and hybrid energy recovery. Those details point to a physics-oriented design rather than a game built mainly around cosmetic upgrades.
Keep built-in features distinct from mods: community-made content can expand the experience, but it is not the same thing as official tuning included with the base game. Current comparison coverage also places Assetto Corsa among the simulation-focused choices. Its appeal is greatest when you want to explore the broader PC ecosystem as well as the driving model.

Choose it if: you value simulation feel and PC flexibility more than a turnkey, all-in-one customization menu.
3. Assetto Corsa Competizione: best for realistic GT racing
Assetto Corsa Competizione is the specialist pick for GT competition, especially GT3, GT4 and endurance racing. Kunos describes simulation of tyre grip, aerodynamics, engines, suspension, electronics and mechanical damage. Publisher 505 Games calls it “the official GT World Challenge videogame.”

That focus is also its limitation for a tuning-game search: the central activity is preparing and racing competition cars, not collecting and visually customizing a wide range of street cars. It suits players who mean race setup when they say tuning and want their driving to revolve around GT racing.
Choose it if: GT racing and detailed competition-car behaviour matter more than broad road-car upgrades.
4. Forza Motorsport: best accessible circuit racing on Xbox and PC
Forza Motorsport offers circuit racing and setup work without the narrow discipline focus of a dedicated GT title. Current comparison coverage classifies it as simcade: a compromise between simulation-oriented driving and accessibility, rather than a pure simulator. That makes it a sensible route into circuit racing for players who also want a large roster of cars.
Choose it if: you want circuit events and room to work on setups, but prefer a less specialized experience than Assetto Corsa Competizione.
5. BeamNG.drive: best for PC vehicle configuration and behaviour
BeamNG.drive is worth considering if you are interested in how vehicle configuration and component changes affect behaviour. The evidence available here supports its appeal as a PC vehicle-focused option, but does not establish a specific parts list or justify a numerical realism claim. Treat it as a different kind of choice from a competition-focused circuit simulator.
BeamNG’s official steering-wheel setup documentation explains controls and force-feedback configuration and confirms support for PC-compatible steering wheels.

- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
Choose it if: vehicle behaviour and hands-on configuration are your priority on PC.
6. Assetto Corsa EVO: a modern simulation to approach with an Early Access caveat
Assetto Corsa EVO is described in current comparison coverage as a modern simulation with varied cars and serious setup options. It belongs on a shortlist for players looking toward the series’ newer entry, but its status matters: the cited coverage says the game is still in Early Access and that its systems are changing. Confirm the current version and availability before deciding whether it fits your needs.
Choose it if: you are interested in a developing simulation and are comfortable with features and systems evolving during Early Access.
7. Automobilista 2: best for variety across racing categories
Automobilista 2 is a PC simulation option for players looking beyond one racing category. Current guide coverage highlights category variety, AI, weather and VR. The official material reviewed for this guide does not establish its tuning depth in comparable detail, so it is better recommended for breadth of racing experience than for a specific claim about upgrades or setup options.
Choose it if: you want variety in the kinds of racing you can take on, including AI and weather-focused play.

iRacing is best known in this lineup for organized online racing. Current comparison coverage describes it as a PC simulation focused on scheduled competition. Its strength for this topic is competitive realism and race setup—not building or visually customizing a broad collection of street cars.

9. CarX Drift Racing Online: best for drift-focused builds
CarX Drift Racing Online is the niche option for players who want to build and tune cars around drifting. It is realism-adjacent in the sense that it serves a specific driving discipline and its associated tuning interests, but it should not be mistaken for a comprehensive circuit simulator.
Choose it if: drifting—not broad circuit racing—is the experience you want to tune for.
10. Forza Horizon 6: best for open-world driving variety
Forza Horizon 6 belongs on a car-tuning shortlist for players who value open-world driving and variety. Current comparison coverage places it in the arcade category relative to dedicated circuit simulators, so it is a deliberate accessibility and freedom trade-off, not a top pick for simulation-first driving.
Choose it if: you want tuning within an open-world driving experience and do not require the focus of a dedicated circuit simulator.
Which game should you choose?
- For a broad console mix of production cars, performance tuning and visual changes: start with Gran Turismo 7.
- For focused GT racing and race-car behaviour: choose Assetto Corsa Competizione.
- For physics-oriented PC driving and a mod ecosystem: choose Assetto Corsa.
- For accessible circuit racing on Xbox or PC: consider Forza Motorsport.
- For PC vehicle configuration and behaviour: consider BeamNG.drive.
- For drift builds: choose CarX Drift Racing Online; for open-world variety, consider Forza Horizon 6.
What to check before buying a wheel
A USB connection by itself does not prove that a wheel works with a particular console, game or wheelbase. Compatibility depends on the exact hardware and platform combination. Check the wheel maker’s compatibility listing for your model and the game, and confirm the game’s current support before buying.
For PC setup, BeamNG’s steering-wheel documentation covers controls and force feedback. For a specific wheel, consult the manufacturer’s own reference; Thrustmaster’s compatibility page lists game and platform combinations. Do not assume a wheel that works on PC will also work on a console.
