Top 10 Motorcycles For Senior Riders

The best motorcycle for a senior rider depends on more than seat height. Here are 10 current U.S. models compared for weight, reach, clutch effort, ABS, and low-speed control.

Age alone does not determine whether a motorcycle is a sensible choice. The better questions are whether the rider can comfortably reach the controls, support the bike at a stop, manage its fully fueled weight, operate the clutch, and maneuver it at walking speed.

The motorcycles below cover several different needs: low-seat cruisers, lightweight standards, automatic scooters, DCT-equipped Hondas, and larger touring machines. They are not ranked by engine size. A 400cc motorcycle can be physically demanding if it is tall or awkward, while a larger automatic motorcycle may reduce hand fatigue but introduce much greater weight and power.

What makes a motorcycle suitable for an older rider?

A motorcycle for a senior rider should fit the rider—not merely have the lowest advertised seat. Seat width, handlebar reach, steering effort, center of gravity, clutch pull, braking technology, and parking weight all affect confidence and control.

NHTSA notes that riding a motorcycle requires more physical skill and strength than driving a passenger vehicle. All U.S. states require a motorcycle endorsement or license classification, although the testing and training requirements vary. A current rider who has been away from motorcycling for several years should treat refresher training as part of buying the motorcycle.

ABS is strongly preferable when available. Research cited by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found a statistically significant 22% lower rate of fatal crash involvements for ABS-equipped motorcycles compared with the same models without ABS. ABS does not prevent every crash, but it can help prevent wheel lock during emergency braking.

1. Honda Rebel 500

The 2026 Honda Rebel 500 is one of the most approachable conventional motorcycles for a returning rider. Its 27.2-inch seat and narrow junction between the seat and fuel tank make it easier to mount, dismount, and put a foot down at a stop. The 414-pound curb weight is manageable by middleweight standards, and front and rear ABS are included.

Its 471cc parallel-twin engine provides substantially more flexibility than a small single-cylinder motorcycle without becoming a high-performance machine. The compromise is traditional motorcycle involvement: the Rebel has a manual clutch, a six-speed gearbox, and chain drive. Riders with reduced left-hand strength should test the clutch before buying.

2026 U.S. MSRP: $6,799, before Honda’s listed $600 destination charge.

2. Kawasaki Eliminator ABS

The Kawasaki Eliminator ABS combines a low seat with a lower curb weight than the Rebel 500. The ABS version weighs 388.1 pounds, has a 28.9-inch seat, and uses a 451cc parallel-twin engine with a six-speed transmission. Its cruiser layout gives a rider a relaxed reach to the bars without the mass of a large touring cruiser.

Kawasaki’s ERGO-FIT system also allows some ergonomic adjustment. That does not replace a test ride, however. The Eliminator’s 18-inch front wheel and cruiser geometry may feel unfamiliar to someone returning to motorcycling after decades away.

2026 U.S. MSRP: $6,799 for the ABS model, plus Kawasaki’s listed $650 destination charge.

3. Royal Enfield Hunter 350

The Hunter 350 is aimed at riders who want a compact, relaxed motorcycle for city streets and secondary roads. Its 790mm seat is approximately 31.1 inches, and it uses a 350cc single-cylinder engine with dual-channel ABS. Royal Enfield emphasizes the Hunter’s seat and standover arrangement for stop-and-go riding.

Its appeal is manageable pace and simple dimensions rather than high-speed performance. That makes it a reasonable fit for local riding, but a less convincing choice for frequent interstate travel, two-up riding, or loaded touring. The engine’s smaller output leaves less reserve for passing at highway speeds.

4. Triumph Speed 400

The Triumph Speed 400 is a light, upright alternative to the low-slung cruiser models. It has a 398.15cc single-cylinder engine, a six-speed gearbox, ABS on both brakes, and a 375-pound wet weight. Riders who find feet-forward cruiser ergonomics uncomfortable may prefer its standard riding position.

The key warning is its 31.1-inch seat. That is not exceptionally tall for a standard motorcycle, but it is nearly four inches higher than the Rebel 500’s seat. A rider should sit on one with normal footwear and check whether both feet—or at least one secure foot—can be placed confidently at a stop.

5. Honda Rebel 1100 DCT

The Honda Rebel 1100 DCT is for an experienced rider who wants a low cruiser seat without routine clutch-lever use or manual gear changes. Its 1,084cc parallel-twin engine is paired with Honda’s six-speed automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission. The 27.9-inch seat is accessible, and ABS is standard.

DCT makes traffic and repeated starts less tiring for some riders, but it does not make this a beginner motorcycle. The Rebel 1100 DCT weighs 518 pounds at the curb and has substantially more power than the Rebel 500. Consider the rider’s ability to push, park, and recover the bike on an incline—not just whether both feet touch the ground.

6. Honda NC750X DCT

The NC750X DCT suits riders seeking an upright, practical motorcycle for commuting and touring. Its 745cc parallel twin drives through a six-speed automatic DCT, eliminating clutch operation and manual shifting. It has a 31.6-inch seat, a 497-pound curb weight, dual front-disc ABS, and a 3.7-gallon tank.

That seat is relatively low for an adventure-touring motorcycle, but it may still be too tall for shorter riders, particularly when the bike is loaded. The NC750X is also much heavier than a small standard motorcycle. Its automatic transmission reduces workload at the left hand and foot; it does not reduce the effort required to maneuver nearly 500 pounds in a parking lot.

7. Suzuki Burgman 400

The Suzuki Burgman 400 is the clearest choice here for someone who wants scooter-style operation. Its 400cc single-cylinder engine uses a CVT automatic transmission, so there is no clutch lever or manual gear selector. The 29.7-inch seat, step-through-style layout, weather protection, under-seat storage, traction control, and ABS-equipped brakes add everyday practicality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not mistake its scooter format for lightweight construction. The Burgman 400 has a 481-pound curb weight, and its broad bodywork can feel different from a narrow motorcycle at walking speed. Practice slow turns and parking maneuvers before committing to longer rides.

8. BMW R 12

The BMW R 12 offers a low 29.7-inch seat, shaft drive, ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control, and a 500-pound fully fueled road-ready weight. Its 1,170cc boxer twin and cruiser styling make it attractive to an experienced rider who wants premium equipment and less chain-maintenance work.

It is not an automatic motorcycle or a beginner’s motorcycle. The R 12 still uses a six-speed manual transmission and a dry clutch, and its engine is powerful. Electronic rider aids can support the rider, but they cannot overcome difficulty holding up a 500-pound motorcycle during a poorly judged stop.

2026 U.S. base MSRP: $13,145 before destination, tax, title, and registration.

9. Honda Gold Wing Automatic DCT

The Gold Wing Automatic DCT is a specialist choice for an experienced rider who wants long-distance comfort, weather protection, reverse, cruise control, and automatic shifting. Its 1,833cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine uses a seven-speed DCT. The 29.3-inch seat and low center of gravity help explain why the motorcycle can feel stable once moving.

  • Multi-Activity Use – Suitable for Adults & Teens in Motorcycle, ATV, Skiing, Karting, Biking & More. A Great Gift for Loved Ones.

The number that matters most in a parking lot is its 808-pound curb weight. Reverse helps, but it cannot make the Gold Wing easy to push across a sloping or uneven surface. A rider should have a reliable parking plan, avoid stopping where the bike may lean away from the downhill side, and be honest about current leg, hip, shoulder, and back strength.

2026 U.S. MSRP: $26,500 before destination and other charges.

10. Kawasaki Versys 650 LT ABS

The Versys 650 LT ABS is a touring-oriented option for taller or physically capable riders. It combines a 649cc parallel twin, upright ergonomics, ABS, traction control, long-travel suspension, hand guards, and hard saddlebags. Its 33.3-inch seat provides useful legroom but rules it out for many shorter riders.

The listed curb weight is 482.9 pounds, and Kawasaki says the saddlebags and hand guards add approximately 20 pounds. That loaded figure matters when pushing the motorcycle, making a tight turn, or catching it after a low-speed lean. For the right rider, the upright position and highway protection are valuable; for a rider concerned about reach or low-speed strength, it is one of the least forgiving choices on this list.

How to choose between them

Start with control, not displacement

Engine size is a poor shortcut for safety. A smaller motorcycle may be lighter and less powerful, but it may also have a tall seat, a demanding clutch, or limited highway performance. Conversely, a DCT motorcycle can reduce clutch fatigue while adding hundreds of pounds and significantly more acceleration.

Compare the weight you will actually handle

Use curb weight or fully fueled road-ready weight where available, then account for accessories, luggage, and fuel. The Gold Wing demonstrates why a low seat can be misleading: its 29.3-inch seat is close to that of the Burgman 400, but the Gold Wing weighs 327 pounds more.

Test the motorcycle in the situations that cause trouble

  1. Mount and dismount from both sides.
  2. Turn the handlebars fully left and right while walking the motorcycle.
  3. Stop with the bike upright and place the foot you naturally use for support.
  4. Make several slow, tight turns without putting a foot down unexpectedly.
  5. Back the motorcycle out of a parking space and up a mild incline.
  6. Operate the clutch repeatedly, if equipped, and assess hand fatigue.
  7. Test the reach to the front brake, rear brake, turn signals, and switchgear while wearing gloves.

If a dealer will not permit a controlled low-speed evaluation, find another dealer or arrange professional instruction before purchasing.

Safety equipment and training still matter

No motorcycle on this list is inherently safe. NHTSA reports that motorcycling is substantially more hazardous per mile than passenger-car travel. A motorcycle endorsement, current skills training, a properly fitted helmet, abrasion-resistant riding gear, gloves, over-the-ankle boots, and a deliberate approach to speed and following distance remain essential.

For a returning rider, the sensible sequence is to complete a recognized refresher course, practice braking and low-speed turns in a controlled area, and then choose a motorcycle that can be handled without straining. If physical limitations affect balance, reaction time, grip strength, or vision, discussing riding with a qualified clinician or instructor is prudent.

FAQ

What is the easiest motorcycle for a senior rider to handle?

For a conventional manual motorcycle, the Honda Rebel 500 and Kawasaki Eliminator ABS are strong starting points because they combine low seats with moderate weights. Riders who want no clutch operation should consider the Suzuki Burgman 400, although its 481-pound weight still requires careful low-speed handling.

Are automatic motorcycles safer for older riders?

Automatic transmissions can reduce clutch and shifting workload, which may help a rider with hand fatigue or limited clutch-hand strength. They do not remove the need to control steering, braking, throttle, parking, and balance. Some automatic models, including the Gold Wing DCT, are extremely heavy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a low seat more important than motorcycle weight?

Neither should be considered alone. A low seat helps a rider reach the ground, but a heavy motorcycle can still be difficult to push, stop, or recover after a lean. Seat width, center of gravity, handlebar reach, and fully fueled weight all need to be evaluated.

Should older riders avoid large motorcycles?

Not automatically. An experienced rider with the required strength, training, and parking strategy may use a large motorcycle successfully. However, high weight and power increase the consequences of low-speed mistakes, so a smaller or automatic model is often the more manageable choice.

The Bottom Line

The Honda Rebel 500 and Kawasaki Eliminator ABS are the most broadly approachable choices because their seats are low and their weights are moderate. The Triumph Speed 400 is a good lightweight upright alternative, while the Suzuki Burgman 400, Honda Rebel 1100 DCT, and Honda NC750X DCT reduce clutch demands. The BMW R 12, Versys 650 LT, and Gold Wing DCT are better viewed as experienced-rider options.

Before buying, sit on the motorcycle, move it with the engine off, practice low-speed braking and turning, and compare its fully fueled and loaded weight with your current physical ability. The motorcycle that looks best on paper is not the right one if you cannot confidently control it in a parking lot.
