These are mpgof.com’s published ranking figures, not a trim-by-trim EPA verification. “Compact SUV” here refers to the ranking publisher’s selected model set; EPA regulatory categories do not define this exact consumer segment.

Below is mpgof.com’s model-year 2025 ranking, using the combined city/highway MPG reported for each model’s most efficient trim. The order and figures are the publisher’s indexed claims and have not been independently checked against every EPA model-and-trim record.

MPG describes fuel economy for vehicles that use liquid fuel. MPGe is a separate efficiency measure used for electric vehicles; it should not be compared as though it were the same unit as MPG. The ranking places EVs in a separate MPGe list.

What is the most fuel-efficient compact SUV for 2025?
By mpgof.com’s list, it is the Kia Niro at 53 MPG combined for its most efficient trim. That answer is specific to this ranking’s model set and selection method, rather than an EPA-defined ranking of every vehicle in a formal “compact SUV” category.
Does the MPG rating change by trim or all-wheel drive?
Yes. The ranking selects each model’s most efficient trim, so the listed number should not be assumed to apply to every version of that model. Wheel drive configuration, equipment, and trim can affect the specific rating. Before comparing vehicles or estimating fuel costs, check the exact model year, trim, and drivetrain on the vehicle’s fuel-economy label or in the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov database.

How to interpret these 2025 MPG figures
They are ranking figures, not a fresh EPA extraction
mpgof.com’s ranking result supplies the sequence and combined MPG values above. EPA’s fuel-economy data page explains that ratings are based on testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, along with manufacturer-submitted test data. EPA also says manufacturers must change or update label values when evidence shows they are too high. The EPA’s Data on Cars used for Testing Fuel Economy page lists 2025 Test Car List Data dated January 2026; the figures in this ranking have not been matched row by row to that model-level data.
Preliminary fleet trends are not trim-level ratings
EPA’s Automotive Trends portal identifies its 2025 model-year values as preliminary. Those fleet-level estimates are useful for understanding broad changes in vehicle efficiency, but they are not a substitute for a final, exact trim-level window-sticker rating. The EPA Automotive Trends data should therefore not be read as confirmation of any particular row in this list.

How should you compare two high-MPG hybrid SUVs?
MPG is one useful filter, but it does not settle which vehicle suits a buyer. A January 29, 2025 Associated Press comparison published by Edmunds put the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid at 39 MPG combined (37 MPG for Woodland Edition) and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Blue at 38 MPG combined, with other Tucson Hybrid trims at 35 MPG. Edmunds’ own mixed-driving route returned 35 MPG for the RAV4 and 34 MPG for the Tucson; those route results describe that test, not what every driver should expect.
That comparison also found the Tucson more powerful on paper (231 hp versus 219 hp) and slightly quicker in its test to 60 mph (7.7 versus 7.8 seconds), while the RAV4 had the higher EPA combined rating. Comfort, technology, cargo needs, and price/value are additional factors Edmunds considered. The takeaway is not that one of these SUVs is universally better, but that a one-MPG ranking difference does not capture the whole ownership decision.

What to check before choosing from the list
- Exact version: Verify the trim and drivetrain behind the rating, especially if you are comparing AWD and FWD versions.
- Plug-in charging: For a plug-in hybrid, consider whether you can charge regularly; the ranking’s MPG figure alone does not describe how your use of electric driving may affect fuel consumption.
- Your driving: EPA ratings provide a standardized comparison, while real-world results vary with driving style, route, weather, cargo, and other conditions.
- Practical fit: Compare space, comfort, technology, and price alongside fuel economy rather than treating the highest MPG as an automatic winner.
