There is no defensible ranking of the “top” Miata conversions by popularity, cost, performance or quality. The ten options below are different build directions, from modifying the stock engine to preparing a car for competition. The right choice depends on the MX-5 generation, intended use, available parts, workmanship and local road and emissions rules.
What should you know before choosing a Miata conversion?
“Conversion” can mean anything from adding forced induction to replacing the entire powertrain or building a dedicated race car. Those projects are not directly comparable: a part documented for one model year does not establish fitment on another, and a competition build is not automatically suitable for public roads.
For context, Mazda North American Operations lists the stock U.S.-market 2026 MX-5 Miata’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder at 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, with a 7,500-rpm redline. Those are factory specifications, not predictions for any modified car. Mazda’s 2026 U.S. specifications do not apply automatically to other model years or markets.
The original car’s design offers useful context, not a rule for what owners should build. In its account of the first MX-5, Mazda says the team chose natural aspiration rather than a turbocharger or supercharger, aiming for a light roadster with linear power delivery. Mazda’s history of the MX-5 describes that original design decision; it does not determine which conversion makes sense for a later car.

What are the top 10 Miata conversion directions?
This is a taxonomy, not a popularity or performance ranking. Technical claims are limited to the documented examples identified below; the other categories need build-specific evidence before you can compare results.
1. Turbocharge the stock engine
A turbo conversion keeps the original engine architecture but adds forced induction. It also calls for supporting work such as fuel delivery, cooling, exhaust and engine calibration. Those needs depend on the specific engine and setup. No verified figures here establish power gains, reliability, cost or road legality for a particular MX-5 turbo build.

2. Supercharge the stock engine
A documented example is Edelbrock’s E-Force system for 2016–18 MX-5 models with the 2.0-liter engine. Its installation instructions include ECU-calibration steps, so it is a system installation rather than simply fitting a blower. The instructions establish that specific application; they do not confirm current parts availability, fitment on other years, or emissions approval in a particular location. 3. Swap in a larger Mazda inline-four
A different Mazda four-cylinder may appeal to builders seeking another displacement or engine generation. Compatibility is not established by the fact that both engines are from Mazda: the donor, electronics, mounts, transmission and supporting systems all need to be evaluated for the exact car. No particular donor combination or comparative outcome is verified here.

4. Install a Honda K-series engine
A K-series swap is a non-Mazda four-cylinder route. Treat it as a custom powertrain project, not a plug-and-play fitment. Before comparing a specific package, look for documentation for the exact chassis and engine combination, including what is supplied and what additional drivetrain, wiring, cooling and compliance work is required. No cost or output figure is established here.
5. Convert the car to a V8
A V8 swap is a major engine-conversion direction, not just an engine purchase. Packaging, drivetrain, cooling, braking and certification are among the issues a build plan must address. No particular V8 installation, measured result, kit or legal status is verified here, so do not treat a headline power claim from an unrelated build as a prediction for yours.

6. Swap in a rotary engine
A rotary is another possible powertrain direction associated with Mazda, but that association alone does not establish a supported kit or proven fitment in a given MX-5. Evaluate a specific build on its own documentation, including the donor, installation scope and intended use. No particular rotary conversion result is established here.
7. Convert the MX-5 to electric
An electric conversion replaces the combustion engine with an electric drive system. The meaningful questions are specific to the proposed build: battery location, total weight and its distribution, usable range, charging arrangements and the requirements for safe high-voltage work. No verified MX-5 conversion data here supports a range, cost, weight or performance comparison.

8. Prepare the car for rally or off-road use
This is a use-case conversion rather than a single powertrain recipe. A plan may involve chassis protection, suspension and tires selected for the terrain, as well as other safety equipment suited to the event or use. No particular kit or measured performance result is verified here; start with the rules and conditions for the intended venue rather than assuming a road setup will transfer.
9. Build an NC-generation Spec MX-5 for club racing
Mazda says its Spec MX-5 program is based on third-generation NC cars from model years 2006–2015 and offers a race kit with nearly every part needed to convert a road car for that class. Mazda Motorsports describes the program’s aims as “affordability, reliability, tech-ability, and really fun to drive.” This is a class-racing route: check the current rules and technical resources before buying parts or treating a build as compliant. The kit description does not establish that a converted car is suitable for street use. Mazda Motorsports’ Spec MX-5 kit and rules page was updated January 3, 2023.
10. Prepare or buy an MX-5 Cup race car
The MX-5 Cup route is substantially more comprehensive than a road-car bolt-on conversion. Mazda Motorsports describes production as starting with a production car that is disassembled, then welded, painted and fitted with a full roll cage and interior before assembly with more than 250 motorsports-specific parts. The page says the SKYACTIV 2.0-liter engine and SADEV sequential six-speed gearbox are sealed to support competition parity and cost control. Spec MX-5 and MX-5 Cup are both competition paths, but they describe different levels and scopes of preparation. Confirm the current rules and technical documentation for the specific series before choosing parts or beginning a build.

How should you choose a conversion?
Start with the car and the job you need it to do, then compare documented plans for that exact combination. Avoid comparing a race kit, an engine swap and a forced-induction package as if they offer the same scope or purpose.

- Set the use case: decide whether the goal is street driving, track days, a named race class or off-road use. For a competition build, consult the current class rules and technical documents first.
