Car and Driver’s 2007 5Best Trucks coverage evaluated 54 nominees on its own 1-to-100 scale and separated SUVs into categories as vehicle sizes and crossovers changed. Edmunds lists EPA fuel-economy ratings of 23 city/30 highway mpg for front-wheel drive and 22/28 mpg for all-wheel drive. 2. Toyota RAV4 — flexible compact with an optional V6

3. Subaru Forester — small-SUV safety award pick
The Forester earns a place as a compact option with a 2007 IIHS Top Safety Pick award. 5. Ford Edge — midsize safety award candidate
The Edge makes this list as a midsize SUV recognized by IIHS for 2007.
