Tom Matano, the influential designer and design leader associated with the original Mazda MX-5 Miata, died at 77. His family memorial gives his date of death as September 21, 2025; Mazda also confirmed his death at age 77 in a notice published two days later.
When did Tom Matano die?
Matano’s family memorial states that he died on Sunday, September 21, 2025, aged 77. Mazda Motor Europe’s September 23, 2025, memorial confirms his age but does not specify the day of his death. The family memorial gives his lifespan as 1947–2025.
Why is Tom Matano called the father of the Miata?
Matano is remembered for his influential role in the first-generation MX-5 Miata, known by its internal-generation designation, NA. Mazda says the original car was introduced under his leadership, while ArtCenter College of Design describes him as having a role in designing the iconic first-generation Miata. These accounts support describing him as a major design figure, not as the sole creator of every element of the car.
The MX-5’s development involved distinct work in program direction, design and engineering. The memorials establish Matano’s design leadership, but do not assign every contributor’s responsibilities in detail. Mazda Motor Europe’s memorial and ArtCenter’s remembrance document his connection to the original car.

Matano’s career beyond Mazda
Born in Nagasaki, Japan, on October 7, 1947, Matano moved to the United States in 1970. His career included work at General Motors, Holden in Australia, BMW and Mazda. He joined Mazda in 1983, according to his family memorial.
ArtCenter College of Design identifies Matano as an alumnus who graduated in 1974. The college’s account of his career also notes his work at GM, BMW and Mazda, alongside his influence on later generations of designers.

His work as an educator and mentor
Matano joined the Academy of Art University in 2002. He served as executive director of its School of Industrial Design for 22 years, and the family memorial gives him the title Director Emeritus. ArtCenter also remembered his work with students and his leadership at the Academy.
His legacy therefore extends beyond the cars associated with his design career: institutions remembering him also emphasize his teaching and mentorship of aspiring designers.

Remembering Tom Matano
ArtCenter Transportation Design Chair Marek Djordjevic said the college was deeply saddened by Matano’s death and that his legacy had touched countless car designers and enthusiasts. The statement appears in ArtCenter’s October 8, 2025, remembrance.
